Taig CNC Mill

mikomill

I am new to this hobby and i am having trouble setting up for my
taig mill. I have everything running but when i jog 3 inches on the
mill, the DRO says i am moving about 30 inches. Does anyone have a
configuration file for Mach2 and the Taig CNC mill or at least the
settings that i need? the mill has a
1\2-20 screw.

thanks for all your help

Re: Breakout Board Wiring and Jumper Question

Jeff
Make sure the jumper on J21 pins 1&2 is on.
To measure the voltage to the steppers, make sure you are on the PCgnd
located
by the parallel port connector. The stepgnd is isolated from the PCgnd.

You should load the Soundlogic.xml to set up the pins for you.
If you don't have it download it form Bob' web page.
Thank you
Jim Cullins

Subject: [mach1mach2cnc] Breakout Board Wiring and Jumper Question

Good Day All,

I have just wired in a Campbell Designs Breakout Board and I have
a few questions about its confirurations.

I have only wired up the step and dir. wires and the boards 5 volt
supply to some Gecko 320 Drives, no limit switches, e-stop, homing
switches etc. When I power up the board a green light is lit but
not the red axis led's as I would expect. I am also unable to read
5 volts from the boards supply for the Gecko 320 Drives. I think
there is a jumper that needs changed, but I didnt recieve any
documentation with the board that tells what jumpers do what. All I
want to do is test the servo motors at this point. Any help
would get me out of this chair and back into the garage where I
belong.

Thanks Alot
Have a Great Day

A group about a program mentioned that runs 4-5-6 axis machines. Steve

use Mach1/2.

and maybe some other little steps. if you want to buy more software.

i listed mastercam and featurecam because i know they do 5axis' but
not alot of cam software does this or a cost a ton. Im just guessing
your budget is lower because your using rhino. not saying there
anything wrong with rhino but its a lower cost cad/3d program.

as for the post processor. if you custom make the machine. you will
have to tweak edit one of the "posts" that comes with the cam
software. or have one made for you.. Alot of time if your buying the
cam software they will make you one just to sell you the software.
and they should for 10k bucks :P

you got to think about do you really need 5axis . or can you get away
with 3 with little more work. Would a 3ax that can run faster less
backlash and cost less be better? would you just have to turn you
mold 3 times and be done faster anyway?

cheapest 5ax cam software i can think of now that is any good would
be visualmill and think its 4k. but should be other if you look
around.

Good luck can't really help that much as i dont own a 5ax yet :P

Re: Update on my CV mode problem

tagrace_99

Ok, another update.

I just made a perfect engraving run with CV mode on.

I am running a much lower acceleration number on the Z with 4.0a
then with 3.5 to get this result.

I was wondering if the problem may be related to the fact that my Z
is at 8000 steps per inch and both X and Y are at 4000 and has
different accel and velocity settings.

I never had this problem with earlier versions.

The lower accel. value did not effect the overall run time. Maybe I
was set a little too agressive for the changes in 4.0a's CV Mode.

At least I'm not in a panic anymore. I can't sleep if my mill isn't
running.

Update on the CV Mode problem...

As I stated before, during an XY engrave job the Z seemed to
feed deeper and deeper on each change of the Y when CV mode is on.

Last night I did a YX engrave with CV on and guess what, the Z
fed deeper and deeper each time X changed.

I also ran an YX engrave with CV OFF and it came out as expected.

Re: Servo only moving one way

I had a similar problem when I first hooked up Mach2, turned out I had used pin 1 for direction. Pin 1 is not suitable for step or direction. Use pins 2 through 9 only and your problem will probably go away.

Hello All,
We can stop this thread now.

After re-checking the wiring and going out and buying much needed test
equipment and talking to a couple of guys from this group...MY PROBLEM IS
SOLVED!!!!!
It was my cable...it was NOT a through cable and now everything works
GREAT...Thanks all for you help.
BTW...watch out for VELOCITY...WOW!!! talk about FAST.
No for the limit switches...GRIN

I assume you have a test meter?

OK, so ... monitor the 'direction' input pin of your servo drive ... can you
see it change state when you use the arrow keys left/right?

answer: yes
the problem lies within the drive, try swapping your X and Y drives
over, see if the problem stays with the drive. Maybe you have damaged the
opto-isolator on the input.

answer: no
ok, so you need to figure out why not .. trace it back to the parallel port,
examine the pin you think it is coming out of wiht your test meter, does it
change state? check the ports and pins config in Mach2 .. have you assigned
more than one thing to that pin??

Note for Art: Problems with 4.0a

Art, I have seen and others have confirmed, some issues with release
4 and possibly 5. I posted earlier in the week about the problem
(post 7742). No cutting to do this weekend but lot's starting
Monday. I have 3.5 (never loaded). Is that prior to the CV
changes? I need to drop back to something more stable. I upgraded
from RC 5 and no longer have that install file.

The problems I am seeing occur are mostly when a file is not running
so the video is not changing that much. Ross confirmed same issue so
I feel it is not PC related.

I call it the "MACH2 Stunned Mode" where the pulsing engine drops
back to some slow motion or total ignore mode. No errors or
indicators of any kind. Reloading the engine makes it go away so
running the test is of no value.

Limit switches operation

In Mach2, how does a user handle a situation where one of the axis
hits a limit switch. I recall a button that overrides the limit
switches. But, is there some mechanism in Mach2 that prevents the
user from jogging more into the limit side and allows only jogging in
the opposite direction? Also, since I connected the X++, X--, and
Xhome into the same parallel port pin, what feature in Mach2 is there
that senses which side of the axis (++ or --) I contacted with.

Thanks,
