The Devil makes work for idle hands 8
Dear All, I¡¯ve figured it to be a good investment to get anti-malware software. Everyday I get at least one virus in the bin & I¡¯m beginning to wonder if it will get into the double figures & scams too are proliferating. Dr Henry Kissinger Nobel laureate said, as regards President Richard Nixon: ¡°Even paranoids have enemies.¡± Be on your guard friends! Hugs John

Another New MacOS? 7
Monterey seems to be the name of the latest MacOS - has anyone tried it yet? My iMac is still on Mojave and, for fear of backwards compatibility being nonexistent, will probably stay that way unless it gives out totally and irrevocably. Best Susan

adding a sketch in ios mail 2
I discovered yesterday you could add a sketch into emails in IOS on the new iPad.... somewhat hilarious... but could see it might be useful for the odd diagram Problem is it only gives you the bare sketch tools like you might get in Notes - so not like you can do a "Michael Angelo -blow you out of the water" art work :-) Jude

Digital Readers 9
Hello folks, I am looking at replacing my Kindle, which I used ti keep in my shoulder bag for reading when we were out for a meal. There are so many models now! I do have the app (also Kobo and the Apple one that I hardly use) on my iPad but that is too big and heavy to carry about. I just want, primarily, good battery life and ease of reading, with capacity in third place but not sure what else I should look for. Any recommendations? TIA! Best Susan

That ghastly rainbow log in screen 3
What a monstrosity -- Apple has made it difficult to get rid of -- someone up at Apple must have been drunk or on something when they deided we all might like that ! What an eyesore. I figured out it only showed up as a log in with multiple users. Threw husband off mine (he never used it anyway ) and i was able to have my a photo I took myself both at log in and desktop. I'm obviously not alone as there is a continuous discussion on Apple discussion area -- do you think they take notice up at Apple when we whinge about something like that monstrosity for a log in. I have tried out various desktop pictures over time. I like to make the occasional swap - on the older Mac if you had a desktop pic sitting there too long it sort of burned it into the screen a bit. Don't know if it would do it on the iMac Pro screen. One wouldn't want a rainbow burned in would one ? :-) Jude

Canva 2
Some creative locals on the local fb page had been talking Canva as a design tool. You can have use as a free account. It's quite interesting. Has app for Mac and app for iPad and iPhone. Free is not too shabby I have to say. Put it on my iPad pro and it understands the pen. I have been having a few experiments with it. I picked on a presentation template and had a play with it and downloaded it as a .pptx and it opened quite ok. Having a play with greeting cards at the moment. You can progress to doing printed items via Canva -- t shirts, mugs etc. It lets you drop in pix from Pexels and Insta etc to your project. Can do a certain amount of photo editing with it. Canva Apps on app store and on Canva site. I don't know if I would have enough use for it as a Pro subscription and not collaborating with anyone these days for the most part. https://www.canva.com We have to fill in our time don't we ... till the borders open down here in Oz. :-) Jude

Hi everyone -- still alive? 47
You are all extremely quiet. Are you all beavering away from home offices? We're retired people and we know how boring that can be - so can't imagine how it must be for people who are used to the cameraderie of the office water fountain. I sat in front of my computer for what was supposed to be an instructive online chat about Zoom two days ago - only to discover some faceless bloke was just showing slides and they had turned off mike and vision for 150 people who attended the online event. Yes we know you need decent internet connection but if they'd said was slides only I wouldn't have bothered frankly. So there was an hour of my time I'll never get back :-) Yesterday I edited a photo in Afffinity photo and when I did save to desktop it saved it as a .afphoto file !@#$^&!! Whats that when its at home I said to myself. Discovered one has to go to the "Export" function to get a .tiff.jpeg, etc. So I can understand why someone might say of it "its not Photoshop" when even that is not very intuitive. I obviously need to spend more time learning the program :-) The iPad is serving a purpose to give mdy brain something to do while we are all still minding our Ps and Qs in Covid restrictions down here... but really .... it is just an expensive toy :-) I tried laying out something in Pages on the iPad Pro and found it so frustrating I got out of bed and wandered round to my Mac and airdropped it and got on with it. Total given up on the idea of doing anything serious with Pages on the iPad now. I'm not saying I regret the purchase, but in a way its just confirmed my all time opinion of it. First world problems :-) Jude

God -- that log in screen !! !@#$%^&!! 7
I updated my iMac Pro to Big Sur --- hell --- why did none of you warn me about that ugly log in screen !!!! I almost had to go to the loo to chuck. I've tried everything I know to change that godawful colour screen to my own photo -- once I click on name to log in it changes to what I have chosen now -- but honestly that is such a shock to open your Mac and see that first thing in the morning. I feel a letter to Tim Cook coming on !!! Jude

WINLINK on a Mac 5
I'm working towards leveling up in ARES and want to be able to keep my Mac platform. I was hoping someone can help me with a problem I'm having with opening any form/template in WINLINK. I'm using a Mac Book Pro running OS version 11.5.1. I use Safari as my browser. In order to run Winlink Express on my Mac, I've purchased an app called "Crossover." It's not an emulator; it basically takes Windows commands and turns them into Mac commands. I'm able to successfully send messages via TELNET. Haven't tried HF yet. My problem is when I create a new message and then select the drop down menu, "Select Template," which opens up the "Template Manager," and then I double-click a template from the "Standard Template" folder, nothing opens in my browser. Instead, the "Template Manager" box immediately closes and then I'm looking at the "Enter A New Message" page. I don't see any html forms open at all. Any ideas? Thanks. 73s, Jack K7JDC

Hi up there...... you are awful quiet 8
Hope you're all ok up there. I took delivery of my iPad -- been experimenting with it. Flash as it is I keep retreating to my Mac....love my Mac. But I will probably find uses for the iPad as I go along. So far I am thinking it is the toy I always thought it was. But something to fiddle with while we have been in 5 day lockdown - a chance to teach myself new things . Borders between Qld and NSW look to be closed past Christmas at this point. No one going anywhere down here. I had a DNA connection come up on Ancestry who is a son of my late mother's only brother late Jun. I sent him some info he replied he had Covid and I haven't heard from him since that email 30th June. :-( Jude

Things definitely going in the right direction :-) 9
I don't know if my phone calls to Apple about progress on my order which was more than a month ago has paid off .....not only has online morphed to shipping to the store (along with Apple Asia docket in email) ....but its now morphed from 27th to 20th !! So I might be picking up my new iPad Pro on Monday. I shall have to get husband to check if they have zapped the money out of the Visa account. Exciting. Ooooh I have an unboxing come up. Won't smell like a new Mac though. Love the smell of unboxing a new Mac. :-) Happy Jude

The struggle is real :-) 10
Tonight Current Affair Chnl 9 program featured locals talking about our struggles re phone and internet in our area...... it gives you a look at the sort of area we live in. https://youtu.be/XjPdT5qrQK4 I had a part as rent a crowd last week on another channel and got spotted and one of our local club members tracked me down via good old white pages to ask me some Mac questions he wanted sorted :-) Jude

still waiting 6
Month has passed since I ordered iPad. Rang Apple this morning checking on how things were going as theres no progress beyond "processing" on the Apple site and my husband was saying perhaps I should vancel the order....but then I'd be on the end of the queue again. :-) But girl assures me it is on track -- and remarked I had ordered the most popular model the iPad Pro. So we wait ..... they haven't taken the money out anyway....that'll be a clue if the money suddenly zaps out of the account :-) Jude

The unexplainables 4
I did think think Chris would get 10 to 25 & 10 to 50instantly, because he is such a skilled pilot, engineer & scientist. But here¡¯s the thing, I¡¯m sure Chris Harvey have heard of the Youngs slit experiment were several photons/electrons demonstrate a wave like interference pattern. BUT you send one photon through at a time and you still get the interference pattern. How does the single photon, know the other slit is there??? An absolutely brilliant Northern Irish Physicist, John Bell, theorised what Einstein, Podolsky, Rosen called ¡°spooky action at a distance¡± https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPR_paradox.it was a thought experiment, which Einstein didn¡¯t like: ¡°I don¡¯t believe God throws dice!¡± But a brilliant French Physicist, Alain Aspect showed by experiment this was TRUE https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alain_Aspect Two particles can interact instantaneously, faster than the speed of light, but they can¡¯t carry information. How inexplicable is that? I started out doing quantum mechanics, before I turned to making new medicines for mankind John

Can Boris Johnson Bridge The Gap Between The Tories And The England Team? 4
Not sure I remember how I came across this site. Huffpost seems very incisive Begin forwarded message: From: Paul Waugh <info@...> Subject: Can Boris Johnson Bridge The Gap Between The Tories And The England Team? Date: 14 July 2021 at 23:16:08 BST To: johnmiller051118@... Reply-To: waugh.zone@... By Paul Waugh. HuffPost UK. Wednesday July 14 First Up ??Majorca, Menorca And Ibiza Downgraded To Amber Destinations Mind the gap It was Wednesday, just after noon and, in an imposing building overlooking the Thames in Westminster, the questions on football and racism were coming thick and fast. But the venue was not the House of Commons and the speaker was not the prime minister. In the fortified bowels of MI5¡¯s Thames House HQ, director general (aka the ¡®DG¡¯) Ken McCallum was answering queries from the media, including yours truly. Whereas PMQs thrives off the bearpit jeers and cheers, DGQs is an altogether more sober affair, befitting its annual rather than weekly schedule. Yet when McCallum was asked about the problems of online extremism and the impact on young black men in the national team, he sounded more eloquent than many politicians. At almost exactly the same moment that Boris Johnson was squirming under Keir Starmer¡¯s prosecutorial glare, the domestic spymaster was unambiguously praising the England football team for their conduct over the past few weeks. And he explicitly compared his own behind-the-scenes team with the one that performed on Europe¡¯s biggest stage last weekend. ¡°As I watched the penalty shootout on Sunday night,¡± he said, ¡°I was very aware that I¡¯ve got experience, MI5 has got experience, of watching capable, brave young people of all races, giving their all for their country.¡± He went on to say that racism was strongly associated with extreme right wing terror groups whose activity has in recent years become a daily, significant part of his agency¡¯s work. And he clearly meant it when he declared: ¡°I¡¯m proud of many of the people in MI5 today, working to deal with the terrorist threat that is fuelled in important ways by toxic racism¡±. Even the most determined culture warrior would find it difficult to argue that McCallum, the youngest DG in the agency¡¯s history, is some kind of ¡°woke¡± Marxist. The Security Service, just like the England football team, benefits from diversity in a very practical sense as well as a symbolic sense. Looking like the nation it serves is a necessity, not ¡®PC gone mad¡¯. But the contrast between the ease with which McCallum spoke about race, and the discomfort of the PM on the same topic just a few hundred yards away, could not have been more stark. As Starmer marshalled the evidence of senior ministers¡¯ mixed messaging on booing players who ¡®take the knee¡¯, Johnson could tell his usual ¡°vaccines-vaccillation-remoaner¡± distraction technique wouldn't work. With Priti Patel having said booing the team was ¡°a choice¡±, with No10 having said the PM ¡°fully respects¡± the right of those booing to ¡°make their feelings known¡±, even the later U-turn was too late to use as a defence. The real problem was that Johnson resembled the wonky trolley of Dominic Cummings¡¯ image. Drawing a culture war dividing line only works if you don¡¯t keep hopscotching over it yourself. Put another way, ¡°wedge¡± issues (as the Americans call them) are a bit pointless if they end up giving the instigator a political wedgie (as we British would call it). If they noticed at all, the minority of voters who think booing is ok may have been simply been confused by the PM¡¯s shifting stance. He did have one concrete policy announcement in his back pocket, namely extending football ground banning orders to be triggered by online as well as offline offences. Yet even that welcome development was obscured by the bigger row over the gulf between the Tory party and the England team. And when a Tory MP heckled that footballer Tyrone Mings was a ¡°Labour party member¡± they managed to undermine rather than help the PM¡¯s case (¡°I do not want to engage in a political culture war of any kind¡±). Aside from anything else, fai

Hi 11
Hi, I¡¯m not sure entirely what to say. I had 3 seizures, 6th July 04.30. That was the best (?). I had an aura of 3-4 seconds made it to my bed. Gripped my bed like it was SUSIE!. 0930, no aura. My left leg would have kicked every male here into orbit. Then 10 minutes later another one. Took me to local hospital. I was prescribed anti-epileptic medicine at set hours, then as ¡°I needed it. Nurse said ¡°well I¡¯ll end my shift in 30 minutes, so who gives a damn. Well it was hopeless, got dressed, matron helped me. Next day orderly said you can¡¯t stay in bed. So with 3 Degrees & an NIH Postdoctoral fellowship. I was left to look at 4 square walls for 48 hours. At this stage I gave up: ¡°I¡¯ve had enough, I just want go. Where I do not care

Flight simulator 12
Dear Chris, When my Mac crashed I had backed up alien isolation, Tyranny Gold & my 3D Human anatomy atlas. I hadn¡¯t backed up the flight simulator. Could you tell me the supplier again, so (hopefully) I can get it back. I don¡¯t know why it crashed, maybe because I¡¯ve got an Intel based processor & Big Sur is a halfway house between Intel & Apple¡¯s M1 chips John
