Digital Readers

Hello folks,

I am looking at replacing my Kindle, which I used ti keep in my shoulder bag for reading when we were out for a meal. There are so many models now! I do have the app (also Kobo and the Apple one that I hardly use) on my iPad but that is too big and heavy to carry about. I just want, primarily, good battery life and ease of reading, with capacity in third place but not sure what else I should look for. Any recommendations? TIA!

I have the Kobo H20, bought after Barnes and Noble stopped supporting the Nook. ?I’ve had it for a couple of years and it works well. ?It’s waterproof, so it’s not a risk to use it for reading in the bath :-)

The backlight is subtle enough to use in bed at night with the lights out and I therefore don’t disturb my wife if I can’t sleep.

And it’s not giving Bezos more money that he doesn’t need ;-)

Cheers

Chris

I’m too fond of real books. But - I have loaded up magazines on new iPad Pro and took it with me one day last week when accompanied husband to dentist — no mags there due covid so that was a good move as it was a longer procedure. Are all those readers you mentioned just b&w or do they do colour?

They’re mono, Jude. The iPad apps are colour, and I’ve read my MacFormat in the bath on my iPad Air, but the little Kobo is just text and mono pics – but very clear, sharp text.

Thank you kindly! ?One thing I don’t know is whether you can download any book to any machine but that is something I can check. ?My Kindle was not an expensive one for the time, ?80 from Staples, so not even purchased from Amazon.

I refuse to do ebooks locked to a program -- though I know there is a way of converting formats but when they're locked is a damned nuisance.?

I would feel the same but I do have three different apps on my iPad, so if I chose one make and it was not supported as far as I’d like I would still have those apps available. ?I’m not going to rush into a purchase anyway but I appreciate all your comments.

Kindle is locked DRM files. Nuisance. I bought a book about Pages thinking it might further my knowledge at the time -- but can't move it from the Kindle app. But I'm way past that book now anyway.

I’m actually looking at the latest Kindle, after all. ?I can part-exchange my old one for a song ("up to ?15"); the new one is not quite out yet so there is no rush. I still have my original packaging, believe it or not; we tend to squirrel that sort of thing away in the loft. I do note your comment about DRM but that has not been a hindrance so far, so I shall probably just hold my nose and go for it some time this week. Yes, Bezos has *far* too much money and pays his employees poorly, from what I have read, but I don’t see *this* “government” coming down on exploitation or tax avoidance. /sigh
