Here’s an example, Jude. ?Chums of members of the Cabinet being given contracts without any evidence that they could provide the goods.

Good?Law Project
Dear Friend,?

Today the High Court heard our lawyers detail waste, mismanagement - and yet more special treatment for politically connected companies placed in the “痴滨笔” Lane.?

Government paid tens of millions of pounds to PestFix and Ayanda Capital for face masks??NHS standards.?An email from a senior official stated that they needed to “get out of a contract” due to “a failure of the commercial process…

PestFix was in the?“痴滨笔” lane because an ex-director was an old-school friend of a senior official's father-in-law; Ayanda, because one of its senior advisers was a member of Government’s Board of Trade.

Government failed to carry out any proper checks before ordering gowns from PestFix. After examining the evidence, our lawyers told the Court: “over ?100m spent on gowns with no technical assurance, no financial due diligence and based on a misunderstanding of the gowns which were actually being purchased.”

Government didn’t put its cards on the table. One witness went to some lengths to “gloss over” - as our lawyer put it - the lack of technical assurance. It was left to a detailed forensic review by our legal team to uncover this extraordinary failure.?

Government awarded huge contracts to Ayanda Capital despite it having failed financial due diligence.?The hedge fund was given a red rating, which meant there were “Major issues or concerns [which] would need to be resolved before we use them

Not only did this not dissuade Government from accepting Ayanda’s offer to supply millions of FFP2 masks, but its VIP status actually meant that it was invited to supply a different type of mask, leading to an even larger contract award.

This was taxpayers’ money, dished out to companies because of who they knew, not what they could supply. The result - unsurprisingly - was a waste of hundreds of millions of pounds. In these contracts alone.

Our challenge seeks to get to the truth of the PPE procurement process in which - again to quote our lawyer -?“a truly colossal amount of public money” was spent?“in circumstances of almost total secrecy”.

Please help us shine a light on this scandal by sharing with your friends and family and asking them to sign up for updates.?

I think Govts everywhere made mistakes at the beginning of the pandemic —all unknown territory— and in a hurry to get things running immediately for public expectation bound to happen. ?Yes deplorable though that the checks and balances were missing.?
We’ve not had quite the same down here, but some instances, but then we haven’t had to be dealing with such a vast problem as UK.

If only Johnson had stopped those arriving from other countries as swiftly as your Government did; this is not hindsight as it seemed an obvious measure at the time. ?I all for accepting that people make mistakes, particularly when information is incomplete or inconsistent, but there were clear messages from Italy (for instance) and other EU countries. ?And more recently up to 20,000 people from India could have arrived since the ghastly COVID events, so long did it take Johnson to put it on the Red list.

The corruption is rife: PPE contracts were just a small part. ?Consider the ?37Bn that the Test and Trace system was given for a budget, run by a wife of a Tory MP with no experience of anything medical. ?Indeed it was under her that Talk Talk had a major security breach a couple of years ago. ?And T & T is not working . . .

Trouble is the UK population appears to have a portion of the population ?of me me me people - all intent on doing exactly as they please and the greater good is not at the forefront. PM Johnson has a handle on that. Knows if he tried to use Aussie method there’d be war in the streets.?

Aust population on the other hand ?has been criticised in some quarters for herd mentality, but for the most part population has banded together, listened to the PM and done what’s required… (and same in NZ) ..,not that we like it and there’s a deal of rattling going on about Aus citizens not being able to get back home and when are we going to be able to travel again.

A scientist said the other day zero covid for Australia an impossible dream and the moment planes are back there will be cases. It’s not going away any time soon.

Aust not been at the forefront of getting vaccine etc either.
Comes of being arse end of the world I suppose. PM has ordered but then there’s only been a trickle arriving.?

As I said unusual times we live in. Govts are having to wing it on best advice and circumstances at the time.?

So it’s holidays at home for us still.?

I quite agree, Chris. Their inaction, like the proverbial rabbit, cost so many lives.
