Locked Announcement Only: Simple Ways to Recognize Scam Email Messages
What follows can be downloaded: Simple Ways to Recognize Scam Email Messages.docx While definitely not M365 or Office related, I have recently had a client almost fall for a scam email, and she had recalled this advice I'd given her in the past, so I thought it bore sharing here. Simple Ways to Recognize Scam Email Messages 1. First and foremost, does the email address the message is from match where it claims to be coming from? If you receive a message claiming to be from Amazon, then the from address will contain ¡°amazon.com¡± after the at sign, somewhere. From Microsoft it will contain ¡°microsoft.com.¡± The general principle applies that any email message from any major company will contain its domain name after the at sign. This is by far and away the easiest way to recognize a scam message. If a message is made to look like it¡¯s from Citibank, but the return address is something like edna.kornblatt@..., you can be absolutely sure it¡¯s not from Citibank. If a message originates from anywhere other than the domain name you¡¯d expect for where it claims to be coming from, it is a scam! Just delete it and forget it. 2. If the email has one or more of the following characteristics: a) A generic greeting or your name is misspelled in the greeting b) Has incorrect logos or a logo (or any other thing) that ¡°seems off¡± c) Contains obvious spelling and/or grammatical errors d) Contains links to websites you don¡¯t recognize or if it has hyperlinks, e.g. Citibank, where the URL itself points to a completely different site. (Note how the one I created points to the main site for Citibank, Credit Cards, Banking, Mortgage, Personal Loans | Citi.com). e) Includes attachments, particularly ZIP files, and asks you to download and unzip them Messages with any one of the above are virtually certain to be scam messages. NEVER click on the links they contain or download the attachments. Delete them and forget them. 3. Does the message try to prod you into immediate action, claiming any sort of urgency? For example, is there a claim that if you don¡¯t respond that law enforcement will become involved or that a relative is in trouble or something similar? Messages that try to scare you into acting without thinking are scams. Delete them and forget them. 4. Does the message offer something that seems ¡°too good to be true,¡± e.g. money in exchange for a favor (like allowing cash to be deposited to your bank account), that you¡¯ve won a lottery you never entered, or offer a job with an unbelievable rate of pay for the work? Messages that seem ¡°too good to be true¡± are scams. Delete them and forget them. 5. Does the message try to get you to provide personal, credit card or account information via email, text or phone? [Even if it appears to be from a legitimate company you do business with.] Messages that attempt to get you to reveal personal and financial information are scams. Delete them and forget them. If you really want to put your mind at ease if you believe one might be real, the way to verify that is to log in to the account the message appears to be from by hand. So, if the message appears to be from your credit card account holder, open your web browser and enter the web address for that company by hand (or from your personal bookmarks), and log in. If the message is legitimate, the same message will appear in your account message center. If there is no corresponding message in your account message center, then congratulations, you¡¯ve successfully avoided falling for a scam! -- Brian ¡¤ ¡á? ¡¤ ???? ¡¤ Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, Version 24H2, Build 26100; M365 Family; Android 13 (Xiaomi HyperOS 1.0.10.0) It is much easier to be critical than to be correct. ~ Benjamin Disraeli, 1804-1881

fixing a screwed up view in contacts 14
Hi All, I have a customer using Exchange and today somehow, her Contacts view got all messed up. Usually, she can hit control 3 to go into Contacts, and if she wants a contact whose last name begins with l, she just hits the letter l and it jumps to the first name whose last name begins with l. If she types a few letters, it finds the exact name I think. Anyway, I have no idea what view she needs or how the heck to get there to restore her functionality. I would welcome any wisdom. Much thanks. Don

Did anyone attend the Vispero Webinar on JAWS and New Outlook Yesterday? If so, is it worth referring folks to the recorded version once it appears? 19
Given that some webinars are better than others, without regard of who sponsored them, I'd love to hear feedback from those who did attend as to whether they felt the information presented was worth the time and whether they think that others might benefit from the recording.

Rules for Where Emails Go 3
Just a query regarding why some emails with a subject line end up in junk. Yes, I know you can set up rules but a lot of Brian V¡¯s emails are ending up in my junk folder even though he is replying to an email I sent him or replying to an email with the subject ¡°threads.¡± So if ¡°threads¡± is an ok subject line does it end up in junk because of some other wording in the email? There has never been anything spammy in the junk emails I receive from this group. And as far as the ignore conversation thread commands goes Brian is totally correct. It states ¡°press control and delete then space bar and the thread will go to the deleted folder.¡± I got pretty happy about that as I am not good with remembering complicated keystroke sequences. So if instructions are offered in a particular programme it would be great if they worked. Not having a hissy fit just making a comment. Lana

Tired of distressing subject threads? Here's Outlook's oxycodone! 20
The following remedy applies to M365 Outlook Classic Desktop app although I would expect it works also for any other outlook Classic version. Copilot is the Doctor of Medicine in this case. In the M365 Outlook Classic Desktop app, you can use the "Ignore" feature to automatically delete all incoming messages related to a specific thread or conversation. Here's how you can do it: Select the Conversation: Click on any message in the conversation you want to ignore. Ignore the Conversation: Go to the "Home" tab, and in the "Delete" group, click "Ignore". A dialog box will appear asking you to confirm that you want to ignore the conversation. Confirm: Click "Ignore Conversation". This will move the entire conversation, including future messages, to the "Deleted Items" folder. This feature is handy for avoiding unwanted threads without having to manually delete each message End of Copilot¡¯s response. Now I noticed that in my case there is no delete group under the Home upper menu, so if this is also your case, you can just use the shortcut key control plus delete when you are in the list of messages that belong to that tedious thread you want to avoid. A dialogue will immediately pop up asking you for confirmation. You can also reach the ignore option by bringing up the context menu. Salute! Cheers, Leo Bado. Threads 27
Is there a way to delete a thread? When I wake in the morning and I have fifty emails overnight and I see a topic I am not interested in I would like to be able to delete the whole or part of the thread. By that I may read one or two emails in the topic and not want to read the rest. I went to the instructions and saw where you could mute a topic but I am guessing that¡¯s while the thread is active and so once you enact this feature you will receive no more on that topic.. Thanks Lana

New Microsoft Outlook 6
Hi friends, Just thought i would report back, just trying out the new Microsoft Outlook and it looks a lot less tricky than I thought. Lots of the keyboard commands still work and it looks like there are different views, one is the web view and the other is the Outlook view which allows you to move up and down your messages in the inbox etc, open and reply to things, move in to folders etc. It is far more useable than I initially thought to be honest.

Organizing messages in Outlook 15
Hello, Let me start by telling you all that I am a new user to outlook and Windows ten. Up until a few months ago I was still using XP With Outlook Express. The ribbon menus are still giving me fits, but I am finding things out slowly. I am running Windows ten and Jaws 25 and office 19. If you need to know the build of Windows, someone will have to tell me how to find it. Anyway, my question to you is, how do you sort by conversation or thread in Outlook? Sometimes I receive many messages with the same subject and rather than deleting them one at a time, I¡¯d rather dele them as a group to save time. Sorting by subject isn¡¯t what I am looking for. I hope there is a quick way to change this because I would be changing this on and off regularly. Thanks much for any help with this. Kay Malmquist Kay.malmquist@...

I have know idea how this might have happened, so if someone could tell me how to get back in to list view, this would be super. Sure enough, the messages are in columns and not one long list. Microsoft Outlook 9
Hi friends, running Microsoft Windows 11, Microsoft Office 365 and Outlook classic. I Added a GMail account and when you use ctrl+y and go to the Gmail folder, it shows as empty. If I try to use f6 to flick in to the list of folders, it doesn¡¯t bring up the folder list, it just seems to jump between the top bar and then back to the inbox again. Anyone have any ideas?

Call for Info: If you use Office 2019, 2021, or 2024, do you have the Transcribe option in the Dictation function in Word? 4
Earlier today, someone was asking about dictation programs available to convert MP3 (or other audio) files to text. Word 365 has this built in, and I wrote the following so that the basics could be tried out by those who have Word 365: ---- Do you have relatively recent version of MS-Word? If so consider: Microsoft Office users can use the Transcribe feature in Word. Open a new document, go to Home > Dictate dropdown > Transcribe (Alt + H, D, T) You will land on the "Start Recording" button, which allows live recording. Hit Shift + Tab to throw focus to the "Upload File" button. Note: There is a dropdown just before the "Upload File" button that allows you to select the language that is to be used for dictation. It defaults to your current system language. If the source file is audio in another language, make sure to go back to this and select the correct one before you actually upload your audio file. Activate the "Upload File" button and you will get a classic Open dialog allowing you to navigate to and select the audio file you want. You will get lots of "not quite accurate" feedback about the percentage complete of the transcription process because the screen reader cannot keep up with the speed of the transcription, particularly for small audio files. The transcription is not instantaneous, though, and the longer the source audio, the longer it takes. After the transcription process is complete, there is an Add to Document menu button presented in the transcription pane. If you activate it you are presented with 4 options: Just text With speakers With timestamps With speakers and timestamps, pick the one that suits you If you choose "Just text" the text of the audio is inserted into the Word document. If that's all you want transcribed into that particular document, I'd suggest then navigating to the Start New Transcript button and activating it. Transcriptions are saved as items in the transcription pane until you choose to clear them. When you're done with a single audio file or sequence of audio files, it's best to clear the transcription pane using the Start New Transcript button so it's a clean slate for the next cycle. ---- This functionality does not seem to rely on Copilot AI, but it does seem to rely on OneDrive, so I am not sure which of the standalone versions of Office would have it, as a Microsoft Account is definitely needed for all the "moving parts" to work together. For those who have any of the 3 standalone versions of Office that remain in support as of this date, what edition (e.g., Home and Student, Home and Business) do you have and does it have the above noted Transcribe feature that allows the use of pre-recorded audio files? -- Brian ¡¤ ¡á? ¡¤ ???? ¡¤ Virginia, USA - Windows 11 Pro, Version 24H2, Build 26100; M365 Family; Android 13 (Xiaomi HyperOS 1.0.10.0) It is much easier to be critical than to be correct. ~ Benjamin Disraeli, 1804-1881
