Having JAWS 2020 Speak Capital Letters With Microsoft Word 2016

开云体育

Hello Everyone:

?

I want JAWS 2020 to say the word Cap instead of hearing pitch for Capital Letters. I have not been successful to get this to work with Microsoft Word 2016.

?

Before I switch to JAWS, I was using Window-Eyes. They had a feature in their menu system that you could have the program say Cap with Microsoft Word.

?

I have not been successful to get this to work from email that I have asked how to make this work. If you know how this can be accomplished, please send details how to make this happened.

?

Thank you

This can be done by editing a speech and sounds scheme.

1. Press insert-6 (on the numbers row) for the JAWS Settings center.

2.? In the edit field enter "scheme" without the quotes and press down arrow.

3. Look for "Modify Schemes" and press the space key.

4. You can either choose an existing scheme or create a new one. Creating a new one might be preferable in case of any unintended changes. You could call it "Stanley's Test" or something similar.

5. Tab to edit the selected scheme and press space.

6. Navigate to the Misc page. Pressing shift-ctrl-tab should take you to this page.

7. In the list press the letter C and you should move to "caps speak text using single cap voice.

8. Tab to the radio buttons.

9> Press up arrow and select the "speak item" radio button.

10. Tab a few times until you are in an edit field labeled "text." Type "cap" or whatever you want your prefix to be.

11. Tab to OK.

12. You may need to tab to another OK button. You will be asked if you'd like to save the settings. Say yes and see if this does what you want.

Hi David,

?

This is very useful. I notice it works when you arrow letter by letter. Is there any way to set it so you would hear “cap” if you were reading in Say All or continuous reading mode? If this could be done, it would be very nice for proofreading.

?

Thanks,

David, open Settings Center and search for "say all." You should find an option that reads, "indicate caps during say all" which will probably do what you want.

After experimenting with this option I have discovered that what it actually does is to speak words with capital letters in a higher pitch. If you want the "say all" to speak the word "cap" for capitalized words you do have to modify the caps voice in the Misc tab for that particular scheme.

Hi David,

?

Thanks for the advice to go into Say all in Settings Center. It speaks the caps with a higher pitch in Say All, but that works for me.

Yes, I noticed that, as well. However, I was able to get it to say "cap" instead of shifting capitalized words to a higher pitch by modifying the current scheme, moving to the Misc page and setting the caps voice to say "cap" for a capitalized word. Admittedly, this is a rather involved process but I think that FS does it this way to give users a large amount of control over what happens when capitalized letters are encountered.
