A General Note about M365 and MS Office and its auto-update feature - Do not trust it to be timely in the way most others are . . .

As a general note when it comes to M365 or Office as a whole, do not rely on its auto-update feature to keep things 100% up to date in a timely manner.? It just doesn't.? When you're having issues with either of these it's worth trying a manual update (Alt + F, D, R, U).? I know that I just did a manual update less than a month ago, and triggering another now, it's found another set of updates.? M365/Office both have never been as "on top of things" with auto-update as most programs that have that feature are.
?
If that doesn't work to fix an issue, then try?

?

These are things that any screen reader user needs to know, and sometimes neither works if there is a bug in Office/M365 or the screen reader itself.? Also there are plenty of times where the screen reader is just ever so slightly behind schedule to match up functionality with a published change by Microsoft.? It's rare, but it happens, and those lags tend to get fixed pretty promptly if they effect commonly used features.

Thanks for that tip. I've never known how to update Office except via the Store.

Then one of two things:
1. You're doing something wrong.
2. You're using a version of MS-Office that predates Office 2019 (possibly 2016)
?
Alt + F? ? ?File Backstage View
D? ? ? ? ? ? ? Account
R? ? ? ? ? ? ? Update Options
U? ? ? ? ? ? ? Update now
?
The sequence is present in the 365 versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook Classic.? I literally just checked in all four programs.? I believe that I used this same sequence in Office 2016, but no longer have that to test with.

I just tried here. I have an Office 365 subscription dating back to 2016 and it works fine. Alt F, D, R, U.

Indeed, not for me either. This has been the case since approximately early September. They have modified the menus slightly, so now you need to press Alt plus F, navigate to More Options, expand that, then go to Account, and finally to Update. After that, the process remains unchanged. I have repaired Office to ensure everything is in order, and the process has indeed changed on my system. Microsoft? Word for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2412 Build 16.0.18324.20092) 64-bit.

I don't think Microsoft has modified the menus.? The default menu can and does get longer, and a "More options" option appears, if the end user has fetched additional add-ins (and, possibly, for other reasons based upon end-user configuration choices).
?
After hitting Alt + F, here are the entries in a completely unmodified Word 365 File Backstage View.? I have included a blank line where the separators are for the sections:
Home
New
Open
Share
?
Get Add-ins
Info
Save a Copy
Print
Export
Transform
Close
?
Account
Options
------------------------------
If you have anything in addition to those twelve, including a "More Options" rather than just the Account and Options items, it is because some end user customization has been done that adds menu entries.? I also checked that the above is true on my partner's computer under Word 365, as he's entirely tech illiterate and relies on me for any changes, so no changes have been done on his M365/Word 365 or I would have done them.
?
I am using precisely the same release of M365 you are, but have never done any customizations that trigger any changes to the File Backstage View.

How often should you check for updates? I really hope Microsoft will improove the auto update feature as it's so nice having it in other programs.

Whenever you feel like it or whenever something that was behaving stops behaving.? There is no set rule here.
?
It's not that auto-update in M365 never auto-updates, but the checking is not nearly as vigorous as it is with many programs that check for, and will apply or nag you to apply, updates each and every time they're started.? I don't know why this is, but it's been this way for as long as I can remember in Office and M365.

I do not recall making any customizations, but perhaps Adobe did, as I observe this.

File? list
Home? Alt,?? F? ,?? H
New? Alt,?? F? ,?? N
Open? Alt,?? F? ,?? O
Get Add-ins? Alt,?? F? ,?? B? 5 of 12
Info? Alt,?? F? ,?? I
Save? Alt,?? F? ,?? S? 7 of 12
Save As? Alt,?? F? ,?? A
Save as Adobe PDF? Alt,?? F? ,?? Y???? 3? 9 of 12
Print? Alt,?? F? ,?? P
Share? Alt,?? F? ,?? Z
More options? collapsed? Alt,?? F? ,?? 0???? 0? 12 of 12
Back? 1 of 12

under options, I see

Share as Adobe PDF link? 1 of 6
Export? Alt,?? F? ,?? E? 2 of 6
Transform? Alt,?? F? ,?? M? 3 of 6
Close? Alt,?? F? ,?? C? 4 of 6
Account? Alt,?? F? ,?? D? 5 of 6
Options? Alt,?? F? ,?? T? 6 of 6

Upon updating Adobe, which I seldom use, I believe that may have been when the issue arose. I rarely, if ever, modify the options menu. It is possible that Adobe added some features to my menu without my knowledge. Interestingly, when I access the options, the keystroke still indicates Alt + F, D, R, U.

Thanks and happy Tuesday.

Sarah,
?
As a side question, do you have AutoSave enabled since you're a OneDrive user, or not?
?
It's odd for me to see a "Save as" option these days as if OneDrive AutoSave is on (and I use it and adore it) that is replaced with Save a Copy, which is what you're doing, under a different name.
?
And, yes, Adobe Acrobat paid versions do add options to the File Backstage view secondary to installing PDF related add-ins.? That explains why you have a non-standard key sequence to get to a manual update.? Anyone who has installed something that changes the File Backstage view can end up having key sequences change as the number of entries there increases.

No, I do not use OneDrive except for storage. To my knowledge, I do not have any paid Adobe options. Perhaps one of the free options caused something. Regarding updates, I generally check every Thursday or so and usually notice that there is something to install. That is, once a week, though it does not necessarily have to be on a Thursday.

Thanks and happy Tuesday.

Office does have an auto update feature. Brian’s point is that it sometimes gets a bit tardy when automatically updating Office for you. You can use the manual steps Brian laid out if you want to check or don’t want to wait.

?

BTW, it’s for reasons like this that it’s hard to know what version someone is really running when they say they’re running the latest.
