Your points are well taken.? Your best bet with Windows is to restart the machine, and if desperate doing so by holding down the power button to power off, then firing it up again and seeing if speech returns.

If not, then try turning on Narrator (WinKey + Ctrl + Enter) and see if you get any sound/speech from it.

If you've got nothing after that, either sound is muted (which JAWS and NVDA both used to unmute when they started up) or your sound card is not functioning or the audio service is not running for some reason.

Power Options have zero connection to Audio.
