File, with alt+f options, check around in there for check spelling as you type.

Try hitting insert V while you’re in the message, search for spellcheck, then turn off automatic spellcheck

I’ve turned off “notify with Sound” in the accessiiblity under Options, and I can’t find this in JAWS quick settings. Using the latest versions of Office and JAWS.

Thanks

Re: Command in Word to Center a Line

You do not say what screen reader you're using, but you have to remember order of precedence for keyboard shortcuts:
1. Windows - if it's a Windows shortut, then the OS processes it and your're done.? If it's not, then it gets passed to . . .
2. Screen reader gets next crack.? And since most screen readers allow remapping of keyboard shortcuts to some extent if it has "stolen" a shortcut that might be used by the program being accessed, then it processes it.??
3. Last, the program being accessed.
?
My guess is that Ctrl + E has somehow been taken by your screen reader if it's not centering text in Word.? The easiest way to at least try to verify this is to enter the screen reader's pass-through command before you hit Ctrl + E for Word.? If it suddenly works, you have your answer - the screen reader has it and you need to assign whatever it's using it for to a different shortcut.

I tried all of the commands given and they all say they do what they are supposed to do with that one exception! Strange. I need to get a sighted person to watch and see what actually happens on the screen and maybe even a printout. Very odd.

Re: How do I get Outlook to stop making sounds

It is JAWS, insert+6. JAWS is probably making the sounds. There's a buzz sound when the word is incorrect, and a ding when the word has been corrected. NVDA's sounds are worse on the ear.

I think Brian already clarified this, but control+e has been center as long as I have used word and that is since Word 2003.

The only way you would get left justify is with control+l unless something very strange got changed in your keyboard.

Ctrl + E is center.? One selects nothing, but just places one's insertion point somewhere in the text one wants centered, and hits Ctrl + E.

?

This will center all text from where the "chunk" begins until the next hard return (Enter) was hit in the document.? So if you are somewhere in a paragraph that spans lines, the entire paragraph ends up centered.

To what, exactly?
?
Your points are well taken.? Your best bet with Windows is to restart the machine, and if desperate doing so by holding down the power button to power off, then firing it up again and seeing if speech returns.
?
If not, then try turning on Narrator (WinKey + Ctrl + Enter) and see if you get any sound/speech from it.
?
If you've got nothing after that, either sound is muted (which JAWS and NVDA both used to unmute when they started up) or your sound card is not functioning or the audio service is not running for some reason.
?
Power Options have zero connection to Audio.

sounds and speech

Just a little response.
Blind persons cannot see what is going on on the screen.
It is good and wise to have sounds to inform us that something works, or something is turned off.
I am having such a problem at the moment with my Windows 11 computer.
My screen reader is not speaking, which leaves me stuck.
It is possible the Windows 11 sound system was turned off by a tech guy.
He says he played with the Power Options.
When I got back from my walk there was no sound, my screen reader is not speaking.
The shortcut to enable speech is not working.
Without sounds and speech the computer is no longer accessible to a blind person.

Open Configuration Manager, type "spelling" into the search box, then uncheck the box for typing. That should do it. If not, try disabling one of the others.

HTML formatted email, which is essentially all of it, can be written in such a way that the message itself is the determiner of what program gets invoked.? Microsoft makes a habit of having its links open in Edge.

Much more detail about what's being used and the Windows ecosystem it's being used under is needed here.? And if, by chance, the email client is not Outlook, then this is off-topic.

Re: Make Chrome default browser for links in email

If Outlook Classic is opening links in Microsoft Edge instead of your preferred browser, you can change this setting within Outlook itself. Here’s how to make Outlook use your system’s default browser for links:

  1. Open Outlook Classic.

  2. Click?File?in the top left corner.

  3. Select?Options?(bottom left).

  4. In the Outlook Options window, go to the?Advanced?tab.

  5. Scroll to?File and browser preferences?(or?Link Handling?in some older versions).

  6. Find the setting?Open hyperlinks from Outlook in:?and change it from?Microsoft Edge?to?Default Browser.

  7. Click?OK?to save your changes.

?
Links should now open in whatever you have set in Default Apps on your computer as your default web browser.
