Re: OneDrive and Copilot - The Two Are NOT Related in M365 Personal or Family

Well, I thought Joe's question was good. In my opinion, Microsoft gets very poor marks for its written communication skills of late whether one is addressing Copilot integration or the mess it made of its various versions of Outlook and which one is used for what. And it will be a cold day in hell before I use One Drive versus Dropbox regardless of the economic benefits of doing so. As we should all know, there are costs other than just money when choosing a software product to use.?

I agree with Brian,
If you can return it, I would.
It won't be worth the time to get it fixed, and no, stick with M365.

Yes, I agree with you folks about asking specific questions.
But, some of us are not yet experts.
this older blind hearing aid user is somewhat frustrated with my new Acer
desktop running Windows 11.
With Office 365.

Perhapss, I should have purchased Office 2024.
The reason is that the Acer is behaving weirdlike, and the screen reader is
not reading smoothly.

I tried scanning printed papers with OpenBook 9 and it crashed.
OpenBook works fine with my other Windows computer.
It is an HP laptop running Windows 10.
With Office 2019.
And, the tech guy was here twice.

Welcome, but you've just kind of disproven your own opening premise implying that tech expertise is required in order to give necessary detail so that all who are potential assistants have a clear picture of your environment.
?
You went on to give precisely that information for two different machines.
?
BTW, something's wrong with your new computer, but you already know that.? And I'd say if it's been looked at by a professional, is still misbehaving, and is still within the period where it could be returned (whether for refund or exchange) that's what I'd be doing.? There are "lemons" in the computing world just as there are in the automotive world.? One advantage you'll have, at least, is that if you were using M365 and OneDrive from the moment you set the computer up all of your data in Documents, Pictures, and Music are on OneDrive in the cloud and will sync back to any machine where you set it up with OneDrive with the same Microsoft Account.

?

Yes, however this feature is only available for M365 business subscribers (commercial users), which by the way, can use some other quite useful Copilot features.

?

Now, let’s clarify something. In January 2025, Microsoft made available Copilot for all personal and family users (consumers), which brought about very ?specific AI capabilities that are limited in comparison to Copilot for commercial users. This has always been the case since Microsoft launched the AI integration in the M365 ecosystem. So, working with multiple files residing in OneDrive? is only available for business subscribers. Now, let’s tackle what exactly means “working with multiple files.” This simply means that the user can reference (select) multiple files stored in either OneDrive or SharePoint an ask Copilot to do something drawing on the information contained in such documents.

?

Now, in my own experience, let’s tackle the fact of why could be relevant using OneDrive and Copilot if one owns a personal or family subscription. Insofar as Excell, I can’t tell much because I hardly ever use it, but I heard that for some things the document you’re working on should reside in OneDrive undoubtedly. On PowerPoint, the only advantage I’ve found is document transformation from a link. Let me clarify this. Let’s say I want to create a PowerPoint presentation from a file that I wrote. I can simply go to the file explorer on my Windows PC, search for my document, and using the “share” option,? generate a link as if I were to send this link via e-mail to a friend of mine. ?Then, instead of sending this link to my friend, I rather launch PowerPoint, bring up Copilot pane, an introduce the following prompt:

?

Create a PowerPoint presentation from the document available in the following link:? LinkToYourDocument”

?

Wait for a few seconds and you’ll see magic. Now, here’s the secret. The document must reside in OneDrive. No other option or way to circumvent this.

It always does, really.? It also helps (and I should have, but didn't) to make the scope of an answer clear.? Since most of us here are either M365 Personal or Family subscribers, we don't have access to the use cases mentioned.? The first item on the page you gave the link to asks:
Q: Where is Copilot in OneDrive currently available?
A: Copilot in OneDrive is currently available on OneDrive Web for commercial users only.
?
So, for most of us here, who are not commercial users, and who seldom use OneDrive Web, there's no connection at all between OneDrive and Copilot.

What are the use cases for Copilot in OneDrive?

Copilot unlocks great new ways of engaging with your files. Here are a few use cases to get you started:

§? Ask questions on information in your files and Copilot will give you answers directly in chat. Now you don't need to search and open files to get what you're looking for, simply ask Copilot and get answers.

§? Copilot can help you catch up on multiple files by quickly summarizing them. Need to get the main points of an 80-page PDF report before a meeting? Just ask Copilot!

§? Reference existing files in your OneDrive to get Copilot's help on things like preparing FAQs, recommendations on improving a file for an executive meeting, or comparing the main differences between two documents.

§? Copilot is also great at helping you compare the differences between two or more files. You can ask Copilot to create a table or a text summary of two or more files without having to open and close your files.

There is none.? It's that simple.
?
Copilot integration is in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (at the moment, anyway).? Programs that are involved in content creation.? OneDrive is storage.
?
If you're an M365 subscriber, not using OneDrive is wasting money, since you get 1TB of storage as part and parcel of your subscription.? If you're not using M365, then the 5GB you get with OneDrive at no cost is not much space at all, so other options may be better.

Re: Changing to the basic version

Konnie,
?
Since it's Personal, and they're showing a $99.99 renewal fee, that does indicate you're the subscriber.? Since I am not a subscriber to Personal, I can only make educated guesses as to what else is on that page.? But I'd search for $69.99 as a starting point.? There has to be a way for you to keep what you've got by downgrading to the Classic version by your renewal date, and $69.99 is what Personal Classic should cost.
?
If you can't find that, then please report back to us after you've talked with Microsoft, because there has to be a way to keep what you've got for Personal subscribers just as there is for Family subscribers and the page layout for the subscription cancellation for all Personal subscribers should be the same.? I just don't know exactly what's there, and can't know what's there.

How to determine whether you're the Primary Subscriber for M365 Family

1.? Go to for the account you're logged in under.? This is the Subscriptions page.
2. If you are the Primary Subscriber, there will be 2 buttons on this Subscription page that only you will have:
? ? ? ?a) Manage Microsoft 365 Family, Renews on {your renewal date}
? ? ? ?b) Share Microsoft 365 Family, Sharing with X of 5 people? ?(where X is between 0 and 5)
?
If you do not have these two buttons, you are NOT the Primary Subscriber, and you cannot change the M365 service level.? Only the Primary Subscriber can do that.
?
On my partner's computer, where he is one of the seats I've shared, there is only a button near the top, "Use Microsof365.com."? Also, as you continue down the page to another large M365 control it states, "Shared and managed by {Primary Subscriber's Name}."? So if you run into this, you also know you're not the Primary Subscriber.
?
I would imagine that those who are individual subscribers to M365 Personal will have a Manage Microsoft 365 Personal button with the renewal date.? It would make no sense for a sharing button to appear for a Personal subscription.
