It's possible that the license may first need to be removed from the first computer in order for it to be activated on the second one. I have never tried to install 365 Personal on a second computer to see what would happen but 365 Personal is only licensed for one Windows computer at a time. 365 Home, however, shouldn't give you this problem. It's possible that the retailer may have acquired this license from the gray market and, if this is the case, this type of problem can occur. However, that being said even a license bought directly from Microsoft still has restrictions on how many devices can be activated. A call to Microsoft should clear up the mystery but I'd be interested to know if others on this list have alternative ideas.

When originally purchased I bought from a local retailer. The purchase was a card with an area which had to be scratched to reveal the number. Have tried to re-enter this number but no success.
