Re: Blank comments

Hello Ann:

?

I am at a loss for why the comments would automatically close. What happens if, after you create this empty comment, the comment closes leaving you with the text still selected, and you press the application key and choose edit comment. Does it stay in the comment box then or does it close after a short period like when you created the comment?

?

Hi Rick,

Thank you for all your suggestions.

Yes, I do select text before trying to insert a comment by using the Control+Shift and left or right aros. Jaws tells me what is selected.

My comments seem to be set to display in balloons.

A large part of my problem seems to be that the comment pane is disappearing way too fast, and without my having to press escape. It sometimes happens before i can even begin to type. For instance, I select text, press Control+Alt+m, and Jaws tells me I'm inserting a comment. Then, often? within a very few seconds, perhaps two or less, the pane disappears and I'm put back in the main body of the document, and a blank comment was inserted and the comment i meant to type is placed to
the right of what I selected.

Any ideas?

Hello Ann:

First, the shortcut Control+Alt+m is not a JAWS shortcut but is from word.

Are you selecting text before issuing these shortcut keys so that your comment will be associated with some text in the document?

In NVDA when I press one of these shortcut sequences, NVDA speaks my name followed by "comment, edit level 1." This lets me know that I am in the comment area and what I type ends up in the comment. Then, by pressing ESC, I am returned to the document for editing.

In JAWS, after issuing the insert comment shortcut, JAWS speaks "Inserting comment 0 by ()." Again, I am alerted that I am in a comment for editing.

What happens if you ignore the shortcuts and actually use the ribbon by selecting Alt+R and tabbing to the insert comment button and then pressing the button? If you do this, does it indicate whether this button is enabled or disabled?

How is your version of Word set to display comments? Press Alt+R followed by t and then m to open the show markup dialog to see how comments are displayed. I have mine to display in balloons.

Hi folks,

I'm using the latest Jaws2020, Windows10, and Microsoft Word Subscription Version 16.0.13127.20292

Each time i try and enter a comment in a Word document using either the
Jaws keyboard shortcut Control+Alt+m or the Review ribbon and Microsoft
Accelerator keys, the comment itself is blank, but it's text ends up
inserted as part of the main body. Anyone know what's going on and how
to fix this?

It shouldn't be a matter of permission as these are my own documents
that I created.

Thanks for any advice,

~Ann
