Re: Polish Navy Exhibition at Sikorski
Thanks so much for this George. Dad was on the Slazak, whose wooden name plaque is amongst your great photos. He served on it through D Day and the Normandy landings, and at the symbolic taking by Polish troops of the German port of Wilhelmshaven in May 1945. Prior to this he was on the Krakowiak, involved in the invasions of Sicily (June 43), the Greek Cyclades and Dodecanese groups of islands (Nov 43). ? Re: Evacuations research - Pahlevi aerial photos of camp on beaches
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýElzunia and Krystyna, ? I knew that these photos were somewhere on the site! Thanks for finding them. ? John, there are 4 aerial photos that have been joined together and which I posted as a single image on Google Earth. Looks like someone taped the originals together, as you can see tape marks on the joints. The photos were also folded at some stage, as you can also see crease marks. ? Looking through previous posts it seems that these pictures came from a Mr Bronislaw Kielbasa, who passed them to Romuald Lipinski, and Julian Plowy posted them on the gallery. Maybe one of these has more information on the origin of the photos? ? A date of September 1942 is indicated on one of the photos. It would be good if anyone could explain how these numerous tents were used. There are literally hundreds of tents on the beaches, spread over a distance of over 4km. ? Janusz ? Dear Group,
We would like to welcome Carol Hornby Clements to the moderator group. With the current spate of spam emails / email hacking, Carol will be helping to review spam mail and viruses. Re: Evacuations research - Pahlevi aerial photos of camp on beaches
Thank you Krystyna for info re locations of already posted information.
May I respectfullysuggest to members two points for posting to this site. Firstly, if you come across an interesting and pertinent item while searching the net, please go to the forum site and check to see if this information has already been discussed (which it may have been as the forum has been in use for more than 10 years) Also check on the Virtual Museum site to see if this information is there - www.kresy-siberia.org This will save time and space. Secondly, if you are thanking several people for their findings. please use one message only. You can address several people in one message and save space both on the forum and in mail boxes. I hope to offend no-one by these suggestions, I'm just conscious of the sheer volume of postings, which could be curtailed. From memory these were German aerial reconnaissance photos from 1942. but I attach a ?€?Google Earth?€? file which I created at the time. It contains the photos which will display in ?€?Google Earth?€?. Sent: Sunday, 24 March, 2013 4:22 PM To: kresy-siberia@... Subject: [www.Kresy-Siberia.org] Fwd: Wolyn's Ghost Villages [2 Attachments] ? ? [Attachment(s) from Colin Forsyth included below] Hi Everyone.? ? This is my first post in the forum, but I have been doing a lot of reading over the past month doing family research. ? I've recently found many highly detailed maps available online made by the Germans between 1939 and 1944 covering Wolyn. These maps have the Polish names of the villages and also often have the locations of houses, churches and many other buildings. I've been able to overlay these maps using free tools like Google Earth. When doing so, it's shocking to see how many Polish villages are completely missing now. But, by combining the new satellite imagery with the old maps, it's possible to find signs of them though, like photographs of ghosts. ? Just doing a quick search for a missing town on the map, I found an account of what happened in Genocide and Rescue in Wolyn. On page 188 there is mention of the town Marianowka being "liquidated". I see the town on the 1939 map. There is nothing obvious left in the recent satellite image. There are faint signs of roads and yards though. Disturbed soil and vegetation can maintain signs visible from the air for hundreds and even thousands of years. ? I would like to find people who might be interested in a collaborative effort to document these "ghost" villages and settlements to be used in a multimedia map that would used to tie?testimonials, photos and other documents together.? ? Attached is a quick example of the village of Marianowka.? ? Here is a great site for maps? ? ? Colin Forsyth Calgary, AB Canada ? ? ? |
