Welcome to Barbara Proko

Stefan Wisniowski

Please welcome Barbara Proko to the group.

I would like to invite some of the earlier members who have not yet done so,
to put a little bit about themselves out to the group just so we can get to
know each other. (It just might get you some surprising information or
ideas as well!)

Hi Stefan,

All my grandparents (Polish Catholics) came from Western Belarus--small
villages near Radun and Scucin. They emigrated to the US prior to World War
I and all settled in Worcester, Massachusetts.

I've learned recently that several members of their families in Belarus were
deported to Siberia and Kazahkstan, either during or after World War II.
This whole deportation issue is a new topic to me. I have only the barest
details about who was deported, to where, and what became of them. My family
doesn't really know.

In the course of my genealogy research over the past 5 years, I've been
actively involved in identifying and locating cousins in Belarus that my
family in the US had lost contact with decades ago. I just got back from a
2-week trip to Belarus, where I met several cousins, including some whom I
literally didn't even know existed.

I hope to broaden this circle and reconnect more of our family by learning
whatever I can about the members whose lives were changed by deportation.

I heard about this group through one of my other listservs, but can't recall
whether it was Polish Genius or another one.

Thanks,

Barbara Proko
