I ran some 80 meters FT8 on July 1 for an hour starting at 9 pm and got a reasonable amount of business. The problem with 75 phone is the incidence of malicious QRM and the groups of old barnacles who claim to have been conversing on some (perfectly silent) frequency since the Eisenhower administration. If someone can do CW or FTx on the band, then it may be worth the effort and not bring out the PITAs.? On Tue, Jul 4, 2023 at 9:05 AM David Wright <dwright@...> wrote:

I will never understand the link between SFI/A/K and actual propagation. With SFI at 170 and a low A and K one might imagine conditions on the higher bands would be good.
Just now I was on 17, 1 pm to 1:30 pm, trying especially to work Europeans. Only one of them was over 529, with most in the noise and unreadable. A few stateside stations off the back of the antenna managed to break through, but even when I turned the antenna west the W6 guys were 229 at best. Am using a K4D with a JK WARC antenna (3 elements on 17k) at about 77 feet. I do have relatively high noise from power lines (which have been brought to the attention of my Dominion Power contact), but I can manage if the incoming is above 229. It's much more fun when guys are calling like crazy! And they are strong! Did a 42-mile bike ride this morning so missed operating during any HF opening to EU! Jim, N3JT |

I will be closing the slots late in the evening today on 20 meters. Yesterday evening I did 90 contacts on 20 meters. It was pretty chill with very low noise. Interesting contacts in the North Slope of Alaska, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Lots of California, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, etc. I got stopped to rag chew a bunch.
40 meters seems to be ok. I'm hearing NC stations so propagation is at least that far. But there is not much traffic at all on the band right now. John -- DE W5ODJ John Westerman |
Jim, I had a similar experience on 15M this morning.? My RBN spots were pretty dismal showing just a few db SNR at best.? I was only getting an answer about every 5 minutes or so from very weak stations. A similar set up in use here.? A K4D, KPA1500 and a Mosley Pro67 @75ft. which should be more that adequate for what we're doing.? I'm up at bat on 20M at 4PM.? Hopefully that will be a little more lively. Chuck K4QS

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýSame here, guys. Very weak signals on 20M from 2-3pm today (4th).
Very hard to copy.? (58Q's) I tried the APF on the K4 and that was
helpful, but you have to be quick with the RIT. I was able to work
several EU stations. 2 nights ago K2I and K2C were working split on 40! They had pretty good size pile ups. None of that has happened to me, yet. ;) I'm running an attic dipole and about 200W on 20. Jim - I took a 42 mile car ride. ;) Just kidding. We had fun
