Given our QSL card* highlights the Battle of Great Bridge, I figured I'd do some web searching since I'll need some filler about VA history as I gab when not working gobs of stations ....? see link from Wikipedia:
"The?Battle of Great Bridge?was fought December 9, 1775, in the area of?, early in the?. The [Battle of Great Bridge] led to the
departure of Royal Governor??and any remaining vestiges of??power
over the??during the early days of the conflict.
Following increasing political and military tensions in early 1775, both Dunmore and colonial??leaders
recruited troops and engaged in a struggle for available military supplies. The struggle eventually focused on?, where
Dunmore had taken refuge aboard a??vessel. Dunmore's forces had fortified one side of a critical river crossing south of Norfolk at?, while rebel forces had occupied the other side. In an attempt to break up the rebel gathering, Dunmore ordered an attack across the bridge, which was decisively repulsed. Colonel?, the Virginia militia commander at the battle, described it as "a second?".
Shortly thereafter, Norfolk, at the time a??center,
was abandoned by Dunmore and the Tories, who fled to navy ships in the harbor. Rebel-occupied Norfolk was??in
an action begun by Dunmore and completed by rebel forces."
See the wikipedia site for more info about the Battle of Great Bridge.
There is a park highlighting the Battle of Great Bridge is located near Cheaspeake, VA ... see: ?? As far as I know it is not a POTA listed park.? However,
it would be cool to activate during the 13 colonies event.? In fact there are celebrations at the park on the 4th of July, including a youth encampment.
