Jim,
You are going to be hard-pressed to find JAWS scripting expertise on most of the JAWS-user-centric groups, as all of them (including this one) are largely populated by end users.? I would advise you to look at this webpage:???under "Screen Reading Software."? Freedom Scientific has three links there directly related to JAWS scripting. The first paragraph is contradicting... what program do you really have JAWS 2023 *OR* 17 with Windows 10? As far as accessible software, I suggest folks reach out to privately (her email is still attached below). I haven't heard any tax-related software that works well as most cost money; but keep in mind, I'm Canadian. I hire someone to handle my taxes. I have a web site; however, FTP is not widely used any more, my website was built on Wordpress. The back-end is a bit of a learning curve to work-through. Definitely off-topic and standard view, from what I have observed works well. I don't go onto the Gmail website often as I use M365 with my Gmail. So, no further discussion on this, please. This list is JAWS-specific only. Google does a tremendous job in accessibility so this isn't warranted, in my view. Jen, list moderator (who gives the "wrath"). -----Original Message-----

Subject: [JAWS-support] Help me save Gmail's Basic HTML view Pt 1: Feedback Hello All, This may be off-topic, but I feel so strongly about this that I'm prepared to risk the moderator's wrath. As you know, Google are planning to shut down Gmail's Basic HTML view in February. I've been using the Basic HTML view almost exclusively for as long as it's been around. Being forced to switch to the Standard view now would be jarring. And having to say goodbye to the Basic HTML view would be like losing an old friend. So I'm on a mission to persuade Google to reconsider. I'm hoping if enough people make enough noise, they might have a change of heart. One thing you could try is to send feedback to Google. Instructions below. If anyone has difficulty giving feedback, please contact me off-list: 1. Open Gmail in Standard view in an Incognito window (or whatever it's called on Edge or Firefox) and sign in if prompted. 2. Make sure the PC Cursor is active if using JAWS, or Browse Mode if using NVDA. 3. Press Ctrl+Home to move to top of page. 4. Press B four times to reach the Support menu and press Enter to open. 5. Press UpArrow once to reach the "Send feedback to Google" option and press Enter. 6. When the "Send feedback to Google" dialog opens, press Tab twice to reach the "Report an issue" button and press Enter. 7. Tab over to the "When you noticed this issue, what were you trying to do?" menu and press Enter to open. 8. Arrow down to the "Send or receive email" option (or whichever option you prefer, I don't think it matters) and press Enter. 9. Press Tab once to reach the "Describe your issue" textbox. Ironically, this is buggy. Every time I type a character, JAWS speaks the character and adds the phrase, "describe your issue." So type out your issue description elsewhere before copying and pasting it into the textbox. Mine goes a little something like this: # # # # I'm blind and rely on a screen reader called JAWS. It's a software application that enables me to use my Windows PC. With it, I can manage files and folders, surf the web, and send and receive emails. And Gmail's Basic HTML view is my preferred email client. I've been using it for as long as it's been around. It may not be as pretty or as fully-featured as the Standard view, but it's simple and intuitive, fast and responsive, has low bandwidth requirements, and works well with older browsers and older screen readers. Basic HTML view is not only used by the blind/visually impaired. Many other cohorts in the general population also rely on it, such as dyslexia sufferers, people with photosensitive epilepsy, people with an intellectual disability, and people in developing countries who don't have access to high-speed broadband or who can't afford the latest assistive technology. And last but not least, the brave men and women in the armed services who find themselves in remote parts of the globe where Internet connectivity is provided via a painfully slow satellite link, and who wish to stay in touch with loved ones back home. I've been using the Basic HTML view for so long that it's become second nature or muscle memory to me now. If I'm forced to switch to the Standard view after all these years, it might impose such a cognitive load as to adversely affect my productivity and negatively impact my ongoing search for gainful employment. It would also reduce my ability to communicate effectively with family, friends, health professionals, and government agencies (social welfare, revenue, etc). This is nothing short of discrimination as laid down in equality legislation, in my opinion. And this is why I'm asking Google to reconsider their decision to shut down Gmail's Basic HTML view. # # # # But please feel free to give your own reasons in your own words why Google should keep Gmail's Basic HTML view. 10. By the way, don't include any personal or sensitive information in the "Describe your issue" textbox. When you've finished stating your reasons why Google should keep the Basic HTML view, press Tab twice to reach the "We may email you for more information or updates" checkbox. Tick it or leave it unticked as you prefer, but I ticked mine. 11. Tab down to the Next button and press Enter. Never mind if JAWS says, "Next button unabailable." 12. Ignore everything on the next screen apart from the Send button at the bottom. Click on it and you will receive a message saying your report has been sent. And if you have multiple Gmail accounts (and who doesn't? ;)) you can send feedback to Google from each one. Please feel free to forward this message to any group, forum, Facebook page, etc, you think appropriate. Thanks for your support. I'll keep you updated. Bye for now! John |
