CHGA June Meeting - IMPORTANT!!!
3
The CHGA's June meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, June 3rd at 7pm at George's Pizza in Unionville, CT. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT MEETING! We have important decisions to make regarding the future of hang gliding at Talcott Mountain. As discussed in my previous email dated May 23rd, the Aquarion Water Company who owns the LZ is now requiring us to comply with a specific set of rules including the purchase of expensive insurance. If you have not read my previous email regarding our use of the Talcott LZ, I have included a copy/paste of the email below. Please read it and come to the meeting prepared to discuss. I also attached a copy of the new lease agreement Aquarion is requiring us to comply with. Please familiarize yourself with it so we can discuss at the meeting. We also have a proposal to purchase a new motor for the tractor that pulls the megamower. The current motor is no longer functioning. I hope to see you all at George's Pizza next Tuesday, June 3rd. Greg Copy of my email from May 23rd: As discussed at our May meeting, The Aquarion Water Company - owner of the Talcott LZ - is now requiring us to acquire formal permission in writing to use their land. Since then, Aquarion presented us with a document specifying terms & conditions that we are required to agree to if we are to continue using their land. All their requirements are reasonable and we are already in compliance with most of them simply by virtue of the common decency and respect with which we have always treated their land. HOWEVER... one of their requirements is that we carry a $1M body/$1M property insurance policy with Aquarion specifically listed as an additional insured on the policy. If we purchase this insurance policy through the RRRG it will cost us $800/year. This is in addition to the $299 it currently costs to maintain our chapter status with USHPA - a new cost now that USHPA stopped subsidizing liability insurance for chapters and officers, and something I only learned about myself a few weeks ago. In my experience researching insurance for Good Hill Airport several years ago, the RRRG is by far the least expensive insurance we will find. It is CHGA policy to table decisions on major expenditures for one month so members have time to think about the issue prior to voting. However, Aquarion does not want us using their land until they have a copy of that policy in hand. So delaying a vote until our July meeting delays our ability to use the LZ for an additional thirty days. I am therefore presenting the issue to the membership now so everyone has time to think about it prior to the meeting so we can vote on June 3rd. Think about it and I will see you all at our next meeting on Tuesday June 3rd at 7pm. Greg Saracino ReplyForward

Another great day
I would put this on WhatsApp Talcott but it would take me 5 minutes to type it and there is no way to put tables in there as far as I can tell! Data from Oxford airport. Note that the cloudbase jumped only 200 feet from noon to 1pm but from 5000 to 6000 between 2pm and 3pm! That is probably because the Canadian wildfire smoke cleared out around 2pm. It's all about the solar heating. Deane Date Time (edt) Wind (mph) Vis. (mi.) Weather Sky Cond. Update on first Wallaby visits
The first from our group to go to Wallaby was Peter Pfeiffer. Rick and I went the following year and joined him and his family during a Christmas break and for several years after that. We also had Tom Johnston and family come down. I¡¯m not sure when Tom Nejame started but it was before the CT crew started heading down. Thank you, Rick and Bridget

Minutes of the CHGA May meeting
Minutes of the May 6th 2025 CHGA meeting Meeting called to order at 8:05 PM by President Greg Saracino at Georges restaurant. > Greg announced that Al Moore, an old HG pilot from Bethyl, CT passed away in December 2024 while watching TV at home. His brother was getting ready to sell his house and discovered he owned a Northwing Freedom single surface glider in good condition, missing only the base tube. It comes with a High Energy brand pod harness. Please contact Greg if you are interested in buying it. Greg has it. >The HG instructor known as "G" is opening a flight park in Turkey and welcomes pilots to visit him there. >Chapter renewal for RRRG (Insurance org) is complete. For next year they want us to incorporate and to begin having annual waivers signed by each pilot. This is because of the wealthy person that has sued many individual pilots at the Plymouth, MA beach soaring site. If they were all members of a corporation then it would be much easier to fight in court. >The Aquarian water company, owner of the Talcott LZ, contacted Greg to see if he had any permission letter to use that area. Greg responded with the CT Land Use Act which lists hang gliding as one of the activities that are free from lawsuits if the land owner does not accept any money for use of the land. Woz took over as our liaison in dealing with the woman at Aquarian. She looked into it and decided they will issue a 30 year permission letter. >500 acres of Wallaby ranch: The legendary "It's another world." place will be no more when Malcolm Jones moves out at the end of September. The company is building small cottages on hummocks in the swamp. Hope the new tenants like skeeters and gators. Plenty of both. CHGA members have been traveling to Wallaby since 1995. I believe Mark Herman was the first from our group to go there on his Christmas break and then we all went down every April after that, Conditions were often good 5 out of 7 days. Wow, 30 years of soarable fun. Meeting adjourned 8:50. Submitted by Deane (co-secretary)

Tanner-Hiller
6
I spoke with Rhett today regarding the status of Tanner-Hiller. His personal feeling is that it's not going well in spite of the lawyers saying they were confident we would win in the end. But that's just his gut feeling. However, I noticed today that Tanner-Hiller has been remove from aeronautical charts, removed from Airnav's airport directory, and is listed as "permanently closed" on Google Maps. Rhett said we are welcome at Gardener Airport which is about 12 miles straight-line distance north of Tanner-Hiller. It's higher volume than Tanner and has no hangars available, so it's less than ideal, but we may end up there temporarily. But he encourages all of us to keep looking for a place to settle in permanently. He recommends rustic low-volume airports with old, rusty hangars. It does not necessarily have to be an airport - can even just be a large field, preferably with a place to store the Dragonfly and other equipment. Staying hopeful, Greg

Did you know?
5
Did you know that the Crestline, California HG launch area is a mile above sea level and covered with old used carpets? I saw this on a satellite picture and said "What is that?" Then looked up Crestline Soaring Society. I flew there in 1979. Just grass then. Deane

Waterbury-Plymouth airport has been sold
3
At the April meeting Carol mentioned she heard on the news that the airport has been sold. I looked it up today and it was sold to some local pilots (Jim Ouellette who lives on the north end) and others. The new group is called NForty1 LLC. Price was listed as $1 million which is what Ken told me he would sell it for. I called Ken this morning and left a message. I will also try to get in touch with Jim to see what plans or changes they might have in mind, if any. At least we know it will definitely remain as an airport. Deane

John was an active member of our club and lived at the bottom of a soarable ridge in Lime Rock, CT, Red Rocks. He was a naturalist and came up with the idea of flying with a hawk. Minutes of the February meeting
Minutes of CHGA meeting ¨C February 4, 2025 George¡¯s Pizza Unionville, CT Called to order at 8:10 pm Attending: Greg, Tim, Stella, Carol, Peter, Richard and Cindy, Donna and Deane ¡ú Annual chapter renewal with USHGPA has been completed and submitted. An upgraded photo of the LZ has been included as requested showing power lines and seasonal water ¡°hazard¡±. We need to get photo into our website. ¡ú The USHGPA wants us to revise the Talcott site guide by putting all the important info at the top. A disclaimer should be on the resource page where we link to all other sites. ¡ú Risk management plan: Remove Holcomb field from the site guide. Greg has removed mention of this field. It is listed as a closed site for emergency use only. Reason is towing related equipment/location is not covered under insurance. ¡ú Bylaws are outdated and need to be revised. We will talk about this at the March meeting. A mention was made that we should make up a waiver to fly Talcott. Revised by-laws will be distributed to all members. ¡ú Women in Flight: This event will be at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT on March 8th from 10am to 3pm. Members Deane and Kevin have volunteered TVs and Greg has a computer with HTML output to show videos. Female pilots attending ¨C Stella. Also invited were Carol, Jane, Collette, Giselle, Stacy and Jessica Parsons. We need to bring the CHGA Banner and we mentioned possibly handing out business cards and/or pens. ¡ú We voted to put John McNeely¡¯s movies and send the link out to everyone. (Deane¡¯s action item.) ¡ú Legal support for Tanner-Hiller airport recovery: Collette Carlson is in charge of fund-raising for this effort. Our club donation is awaiting further info. ¡ú Stella and Greg are working to reach out to local colleges to promote people who may want to get into the sport. There was some discussion that the costs of $250 a flight or even Rhett¡¯s $185 for a tandem are a bit too much for many students. Greg noted that a serious student pilot would be charged $125. Their advertising efforts will continue. Meeting Adjourned at 8:55 pm. Donna Williams, secretary
