Re: S-40B - How to change to a three-prong AC plug?

Edited

When I don't want to drill a hole for a fuse holder I mount a snap-in fuse block under the chassis.

As for the power cord, if there is some reason not to use a 3 wire cord then I replace the 2 wire non polarized cord and plug with a polarized type.

Regardless, you should always rewire any equipment?that has the fuse in one leg of the AC line and the switch in the other. Specifically, the hot lead should run directly?to the fuse first. From there it should run to the switch and then to the transformer primary. The neutral should be a direct run to the other side of the transformer primary.

since there will be inrush current to the transformer, a slow blow is best, that way you can use a lower rated fuse likely between 1 and 2 amps maybe 1.5 as Steve mentioned, perhaps a bit more, depending on the transformer actual inrush?

If it were mine, and it had no mods, I would be reluctant to drill holes, but would want it fused, so I might put it in a polarized cord, going to the receiver, more like the fusing scheme used in Britain.

Hope it turns out well

That was a DC power connection, which was eliminated in the S-40B.? Hallicrafters covered up the outlet with a metal plate.

I have an S-40B that I picked up recently and am currently refurbishing it.

I am wondering what the two-prong outlet, to the right of the power cord, is.? My SC-40B does not have this, only a plate riveted over the hole.

Thanks.

I’ve done this before with a S-40.? Route the hot side through the fuse holder and then to the switch.? Neutral goes directly to the other connection to the transformer primary.? Ground to chassis.? The S-40B is rated for about .6 amps – therefore, a 1 amp fuse should do nicely (.6A X 1.5 = .9 A).

I would like to change out my two-prong AC plug for a more safe three-prong one. I should probably add a panel mount fuse holder while I am at it.

1.? What wiring route should I take, with the new Hot and Neutral? Does the new Hot go through the switch first?

2.? What amperage fuse should I use? Slow or fast blow?

Thanks.

Thanks Steve.? I do monitor most of the Heathkit lists and groups as well as Facebook.? Fortunately, I have two spare knobs with the incorrect markings.? The receiver needing the knob was TERRIBLY modified by someone when they added a small scope and various controls to the front panel.? They discarded the s-meter and miscellaneous parts and pieces.? Fortunately, I met a nice guy who have a new front panel, s-meter with parts, and three new subassemblies.? I have replaced all the yuck with original parts.? I have two other receivers so I can at least figure out what is proper.? ??

?

I will keep looking.

Gary,

Antique Electronic Supply has a wide assortment of after-market knobs; however, a reasonable match is doubtful – you could probably find something temporary, though.? And of course there’s always eBay, but things like original knobs are usually so overpriced there it’s laughable and infuriating all at the same time.? Your best bet may be to refinish that knob.

Hello Peter, others too.
the question saw in my email? is:

"Does anyone have a list of the specific electrical changes for the SX-100, Model 1, 1A, and 2 versions"

It sounds like a reasonable question, given the list[s] for: say the SX-42.?
But then, how many changes to the manual? exist in all the manuals shipped out is a separate, but desirable piece of information we would all like to find out. I don't know which basic version of receiver i have, so I too would like any available information.
In my opinion, how much care somebody thinks Halligan had 60 years ago does not add any useful infrormation to the original topic.

Classic example… an ICOM IC-706 (any variety)… I mean… an entire HF & VHF station in a box the size of a mid-70s CB… perhaps a better comparison is to an early 50s box of Wheaties (the box was smaller then).

I did an article for ER magazine a while back comparing 1949 surplus prices to 2015.? The multiplier in that case was 8:1? looking back, not forward.? That was oranges to oranges.? Technology has advanced so much that gear back then cannot compare.? I'm not sure that simple inflation figures provide for a real comparison.?

Hi Skip,

I do not have a list, but, BAMA has the manuals for the 100, MK1, MK2 and the MK3. You could download the 4 of them and compare schematics.

A friend of mine was given a SX-100. He is very electronic knowledgeable.

Does anyone have a list of the specific electrical changes for the SX-100, Model 1, 1A, and 2 versions? Dachis only states “minor electrical changes”.
Thanks.
