A S-76 RECEIVER on top at 46lbs with the right most large microvolt/S-meter glass removed The mechanicals of the meter/indicator are shot. Cosmetically pretty beat; bottom front case rust, but no internal penetration. Was capable of 538khz thru 34 mhz in its day. Will need work!

Replacement Coiled Cord for Shure 404C Microphone
First I want to thank everyone for their suggestions and guidance regarding my question about lubricating the VFO assembly of a SR-150.? I appreciate the good information. I purchased a new old stock Shure 404C microphone to use with the SR-150.? Unfortunately the rubber coiled cord is in poor shape and wondered if there might be a suggestion for a source of a replacement coiled cord.? The cord has a shield conductor and one other conductor for PTT. Thank you!? Steve N7AQ |
Re: Hallicrafters S40-B Restoration Advice
Hi Richard,
?
I restored a S-40B a couple of years ago.? The advice provided already is of course very sound.? A tactic I like to do is replace the bulk power supply caps first and then fire up the radio and see how it plays.? It sounds like you've done a power up and it's generally working.?
?
Another thing to note is regarding the RF alignment.? There are holes in the bottom of the cabinet to facilitate tuning, and this must be done with the chassis installed in the cabinet. It's quite tricky because you can't really see well.? I was able to shine a flashlight in adjacent holes and I was still barely able to see what I was doing.? Maybe you won't have to mess with the RF tuning at all.? If you do, it would be helpful to get the lay of the land first with the cabinet off and maybe even do some rough tuning if necessary.? The coils all have beeswax seals.? If you are going to adjust them, it would be helpful to find the slots before the cabinet goes on, do the tuning, then remove the cabinet and re-melt the wax with a heat gun.
?
It's a good radio and the internal speaker sounds quite nice.

Re: Audio Gain Pot-Replacement
I want to thank every one for their thoughts!? After a lot of thinking on this, I have decided to let the pot as it is!? Might not be the best decision, but my wife wants the dining room table back!? And I just am not up to this project, at 77 I might not see it completed!!!!! Thank you all for you thoughts/ ideas!? George |
Re: Hallicrafters S40-B Restoration Advice
开云体育I wonder if two glass plates would do the same .... ?? I flattened out a warped CD one time this way.....heated some tap water slightly (to about 110 degrees) soaked the CD for a few minutes, and pressed between two pieces of flat glass.??Tom Latimer Water probably not good for the dial discs On 5/4/2025 17:11, Justin Bowser -

Re: Hallicrafters S40-B Restoration Advice
For folks that have ran into warped dial discs I found a solution, for mine anyway.? I had a Heathkit VF-1 with a very warped disc.? I took it out and applying heat to it and then placing between a couple 1/2" aluminum plates.? After several "lather, rinse, repeat, cycles, I had a flat disc!? This is very important when the tuning knob acts against the disc...

On a positive note, I replaced the AF amps in my Drake R-4B and R-4C receivers.? The goal was to get hum/buzz down to zero with the AF control wide open.? With a screwdriver connected to the AF amp’s ground lead, I wiped across the chassis in search of the lowest hum/buzz level.? I found several points that met this criteria.? Once found, a hole was drilled in the chassis and a solder lug added for the ground connection. ?At these points, AC heater ground current is minimal, sometimes cancelling altogether.? Thanks Paul.? That screw driver wipe technique is something I will need to remember.? I also do a fair amount of old stereo restoration and your technique will sure come in useful. 73 Don N9OO |
Re: High impedance rivets
Jim - I re=capped a Zenith Transoceanic model 8G005 from the 1940s.? There were a couple paper caps I could not get to without disassembling a bunch of stuff and figured the risk was not worth it.? This was compounded by the wiring insulation was brittle and would crack and fall apart if moved!? That one has a whole bunch of new silicone insulated wire in it!
?
Your observation about the rivets makes me wonder if that might have been the cause of some of my problems in the past...
