Re: SX-62B alignment instructions
开云体育Hi Scott.? That’s good info. So the problem seems to be in the FM limiter /discriminator area ??I will do some head scratching, but others might have the answer first. We had a day or two of nice weather, and I was out cleaning up flower beds so now I cant move. ?

Re: SX-62B alignment instructions

Hi Don,
After I do the AM alignment part of the 2 high bands 88-108 and 27-55, I switch to FM, and there is no sound, because the RF gain control is all the way up,
as I lower the RF gain it begins to howl out of the speaker, then it finally drops into the normal audio hush. My o-scope is in storage, but I am using a frequency counter, and an RCA WR-50b signal generator. The generator output attenuator seems fine, and
cuts off the output on it's lowest setting.
The RF control works the same way with or without the generator running, and sounds terrible on a FM station, overdriven sounding, even with the RF control at its "best sounding position" between 2-3.using the settings as in the alignment setup. On AM the high
bands work, but not well on FM stations. The RF gain control can be advanced to 10 on the 2 top bands in the AM position, and pick up AM signals ok.
When I received the receiver all bands worked, but poorly, I don't remember if FM was proper before the recap, but it barely worked.
The general condition of the receiver is great, with all of the original tubes, which test as new. CW does work, but is turned off. The callibrator works, but is also turned off.
Thanks,
Scott

Your IF alignment instructions are missing an important caveat.? You must lower the SG output to below where the AVC begins to operate.? Not doing so will cause the IFTs to be misaligned.? With the volume and RF gain controls at maximum, the
SG modulation should be heard but just barely over the background noise as the IF alignment progresses.??
Better to measure the voltage at the speaker terminals and not rely too much on one's hearing, especially as we get older, right Richard?.? This IF alignment method would be useable for all superhetrodyne receivers, not just hallicrafters.
Might as well mention that if the radio has a crystal filter in the IF chain, the frequency that this crystal passes through the filter is used to align the IFTs, not the SG dial reading.

Re: S-20R mixer cct.
Thank you, Jim. Well, I'm in Tacoma, if that's considered close to the Canadian border (+/- 3 hr drive on a good day). Shipping it to Arkansas? Return shipping would be a few times the worth of the thing, and who knows what UPS or one of their cousins would do to it, even if double boxed (as I know from experience).
?
In the meantime, my SX-28 stopped working last fall and I've been avoiding it ever since. I need to take a deep breath and dive into it, but not just yet.

Re: SR-160 Vernier Dial Lubricaion

Hi Matt,
First thing is to clean all the old lub off. This should be done with small artist brushes or the steel tube acid brushes dipped into cleaning solution. Don't use a spray cleaner. I use alcohol. Careful, not to get any on the dial face. The gears need very
little lub. I use a toothpick and place a very small dot of white lub on each gear. Then rotate from stop to stop a few times to distribute the grease. A little is great, a little more is bad. If the dial is dirty, carefully clean a small area with just water
and rag. If the dial will not clean up, overlays are available.

Re: S-20R mixer cct.
Thank you, Don. Yes, taking a break from it is what I need. You're right, that cap probably is C7, not C37. And the cathode voltage is okay, so it's probably not a faulty C7. But lifting or removing the LO coil assembly is still necessary to clean things up? around the 6K8. One of these days I'll get back to it.

Re: SX-62 alignment instructions
开云体育Scott, you did not yet say, is it a SX-62 A, or B or no-suffix? It seems that you did the 455 IF ok ????but the 10.7 IF ?is the problem? ??or are you all the way down to the FM ?detector ??? I was just looking ?quickly at the 62-A instructions. ? I did not see any indication of the sig gen output power/voltage so I wonder about that! ?you are saying that there is so much gain in the 7F8 mixer section ?that it somehow ?swamps out the Local oscillator ? ?but only at 10.7,not 455? IS this where you are? IF ALIGNMENT (10.7 MC) - Set the controls as follows: BAND SELECTOR. . . . . .. 27/56 mc range RECEIVE/STANDBY switch .. RECEIVE CALIB. XTAL switch ...... OFF NOISE LIMITER switch ..... OFF VOLUME .............. Near Maximum RECEPTION control. . AM SELEC TIVITY control. NORMAL/SHARP SENSITIVITY control . Near Maximum Set tuning dial pointer at approx. midscale. ? Connect the high side of the signal generator through an 0.1 mfd. capacitor to pin #1 of the 7F8 converter tube. Set signal generator at 10.7 mc and adjust slugs S-4,6.9,13 and 15 for maximum output. Now set slugs S-2 and S-l1 for maximum output but do not readjust slugs S-4 6.9, 13 and 15. 翱谤………………. Set RECEPTION control at FM and adjust slug S-16 for maximum output. Now set Slug S-7 for the null or minimum output as indicated on the output meter. Check the discriminator by slowly tuning the signal generator through 10 .7 mc and observe the two maximum audio level readings on the output meter. If the two peaks are equal the job is done ; if not it may be necessary to reset Slug S-16 until a reasonable balance is obtained. I don’t see how the RF gain[sensitivity] affects the 6F8, but that is a big schematic to try to digest. Somebody must know ? Tom That is a shame.? I was just wondering if you had made any progress.? Perhaps a list member up in the north-west area of the country would be interested in having a go at it?? How far are you from the Canadian border? I'm in Arkansas over 2000 miles away from you so that would be a lot of shipping expense for me to take a look at it.? Re: S-20R mixer cct.
开云体育Tom,? well we all get worn down and discouraged when things beat us. Also, after concentrating on something, it is hard to see the forest ?for the trees.? So perhaps it is time for a break.? Most of us just dab in this, and learn bits and pieces from here and there. Maybe we [ me anyhow] speak over your head, since we as individuals don’t know “just what you know”. It is best to speak up; this is not a competition, it is a mutual assistance group of non-professionals down to first time dabblers. ?While you have your nose in the Rosin smoke, I’m looking into info on the 6K8? and other converters, and so learning a little bit. ? For some time in the future, as to your problem , that cap must be C7 a 2200??F [or these days maybe 2200pF] connected to the cathode? and not C37 connected to the bandswitch.? You had a good voltage on the cathode, so it [and C8] don’t seem to be shorted and my guess is they are ok but cant be sure. ?
