Re: Need some desoldering advice
Here's another idea.....leave them and install new axials on terminal?strips under the chassis.? There is plenty of room to do so.? That's what I did with my PS-500. Pic attached.... 73 Peter VE7PS On Sat, Dec 3, 2022 at 12:17 PM wb6ogd <garywinblad@...> wrote: I was thinking? to try the butane torch too.? My wife has a small kitchen one for brule's.? Re: Need some desoldering advice
A gas butane torch, even a small one is capable of reaching over 2,000 degs. F. So one of the small pencil tip style butane solder gun/torch units should be easily able to liquify the old solder on the can tabs.??

one from Harbor Freight that is really the same.? I use my old Weller gun and it barely does it on the Drake lightweigjht chassis.? Just get the tabs loose, the solder is left for the new cap. My other idea is to just cut the tab on the cap, maybe use a Dremel with cut-off wheel or a big pair of dykes. If you are replacing the can, just rotate the new one slightly so its tabs are next to the old abandoned ones. 73, Gary WB6OGD |
Re: Need some desoldering advice
I find that a Weller gun is all too often not up to the job. The tab and chassis dissi
pate too much heat. In those cases, I use a fairly large American Beauty old fashion soldering iron. They can tranfer much more heat than any gun can.

?
Robert,?
I'd try a butane gas soldering iron/torch. That should give you enough heat to get the old solder to flow.

Need some desoldering advice
Robert Hanley
Greetings to the group. ?I am doing a re-cap on my PS-500 and have run into an issue trying to desolder the tabs on?
the can capacitors. ?My soldering iron is turned up to its max of 850 degs, but the solder will not flow enough to use either a solder puller or solder wick. ?Any hints ?would be greatly appreciated. tnx, ?Robert Hanley KA1DXR |

FPM-300 MKII HELP
Hello everybody, I just entered the group and I'd need your experience and help to fix my FPM300 Mark II.
I purchased it from an experienced ham & tecnician and - beside the added band switch knob that didn't work correctly all the time - the radio was doing pretty good.
After few days it started to lose receiving sensitivity and the rec gain seemed not to work (it basically doesn't raise the sensitivity or really a small amount compared to how it did few days prior), and also the rec audio doesn't raise the volume that much.
Also the transmitter has some serious troubles (and before purchasing we did some nice QSO at the technician QTH) and seems not to transmit since the pre-stages. Finally, the final 6KD6 got fried without turning (for real) the function knob on PTT or VOX modes.
The radio was checked by two experienced technicians but none of them solved the problems. Both of them tried all the realignment procedures but seems they didn't work at all and nothing changes.
I know the situation seems to be very desperate but I really love this rig and I'd do all what is possible to bring it back like it was the first day I switched it on.
Thanks for any suggestion / tip.
Thanks and 73 from Italy - IU4QOC |

Sorry, I don't have any experience with the SX42. The Hallicrafters reflector is a good source if you need some insights on the approach and specific issues. 73's, Pete? W8AA?

I will get it off the shelf, dust off, and remove any mouse nests if present (another hahahaha) Pictures when I can, but before your trip . Give it a good home....had it so long I don't even remember where/when I got it. Keep me advised of your travel plans.......I'm right off I-96 at Okemos Road.?
