Re: HA-1 T.O. Keyer socket gnds
开云体育We sometimes forget that a chassis is often a high-current AC conductor, sometimes carrying several amps of tube heater current.? To Don’s comment, bonding to a single common chassis point often reduces or eliminates induced hum and buzz.? ? Someone mentioned using balanced heaters and a hum control balancing pot.? That’s excellent advice, but during production, manufacturers would typically wire the heater bus first, then overlay additional wiring like laced cable harnesses.? In many transceivers with dense wiring practices, it’s a real challenge to replace heater wiring with a twisted pair without disrupting components and existing wire runs, even if attempting an overlay.? I once tried to balance a Collins KWM-2A’s heather string but gave up: a point was reached where collateral damage started to occur owing to under-chassis packaging density.? ? On a positive note, I replaced the AF amps in my Drake R-4B and R-4C receivers.? The goal was to get hum/buzz down to zero with the AF control wide open.? With a screwdriver connected to the AF amp’s ground lead, I wiped across the chassis in search of the lowest hum/buzz level.? I found several points that met this criteria.? Once found, a hole was drilled in the chassis and a solder lug added for the ground connection. ?At these points, AC heater ground current is minimal, sometimes cancelling altogether.? ? Yes!? I have even wondered if soldering socket ground terminals to the chassis is enough to ensure good performance.? Solder is not the perfect conductor, and does not have the best strength or immunity to fracturing over time.? I have read several times that it is a "best practice" to wire every point directly to a common ground return on the chassis, but have never seen it done in practice, except maybe in some Collins equipment. Very good, Walt.? Glad to see you point out the problem with the tube socket grounds.? Years ago my HA-1 became erratic - code elements missing or the wrong length.? It took me many days before I discovered a faulty ground at a tube socket - it looked
perfect but must have had a high resistance.??

Re: HT-32B SSB Generator - Removed
Great job OM! ?I know you are in the middle of a restoration of that HT-32B, so replacing that electrolytic capacitor and the troublesome Bumble Bee capacitors is well worth the effort. ?You will appreciate the effort in the future when you're too old to heft that heavy transmitter on the repair bench.. hi hi. ? I am surprised at how quickly that SSB generator came out. ?Besides repairing the SSB generator, this may be a good opportunity to clean up the dial gears and smooth out the tuning. ? 73, Scott WA9WFA |
HT-32B SSB Generator - Removed
开云体育Well I went ahead and tackled the removal of the HT-32B SSB Generator Sub-Chassis.?? Not as bad as I thought it would be.It came out relatively easy.? I had one 1/4" head machine screw that was holding the rear left corner of the SSB Generator in place and it was so close to the Power Transformer I couldn't get a nut driver on it.? A wrench was out of the question since that screw was in a small space between the unit and the side wall of the rig.? I was lucky and I could loosen the four nuts holding down the transformer and move it over slightly to just get one of my nut drivers on it. The meter remains in place on the front panel and I simply removed the wiring terminals that went to it.? The MIC connector also remains attached to the front panel.?? So the front panel is only tilted forward and lays on a towel on the bench. The Meter Compression potentiometer bracket assembly is also removed from the front side of the Generator sub-chassis.? It has no wires that go to the Generator, only wires to the meter and one going under to the main chassis. Here is the SSB Generator removed with the cover off. You can see the dual 10uF 350V Electrolytic (C7) on the right side.? I will replace C7.? Of equally great importance is the fact I see two of the ever famous Bumble Bee caps in the upper center.? Those along with another three on the main chassis will see mandatory replacement! Overall I am happy I removed this subchassis.? I will replace those mandatory components mentioned and get everything back together ASAP.? I don't want to leave the transmitter siting without the front panel for to long.? The goal is do the electrical work, some cleaning and back in place before addressing the main transmitter chassis work. This is the only picture of the inside of the HT-32B's SSB Generator that I've seen outside the small B&W version in the Hallicrafters manual. Enjoy es 73 Don N9OO |
Re: Working on HT-32B & Weight Lifting
All the observations mentioned by Don N9OO and others on here were part of the reason why I sold all my heavy radios. ?I sold the heaviest radio first, my Johnson Desk KW as it became physically difficult for me to pull that cage out of the cabinet, then the Collins KWS-1, Invader 2000, 32V2, 32V3, and Valiant, and many others. They had become too heavy for me to physically and safely move to the work bench or back room shelf when rotating radios. ?Now I have mostly lightweight radios left, with the Johnson Ranger being the heaviest. ?I can still move that....I think... ??
?
In hindsight, I should have bought a nice cart on wheels for moving radios from the operating bench to either the repair bench or the back room storage. ?Maybe a cart would be a good solution for safely moving your monster heavy radios. ?Just a thought OM.
