What Can We Do About a Groups IO owner Not Doing Her Job?

THE SWIGG CATS

Edited

Now that "Yahoo!" groups were recently taken over by Verizon, and given the declining use of Yahoo! groups and the possibility that such groups may soon be closed, the owner of one such group recently created a Groups IO version of said group. Posts from new members of said group are moderated, which we believe is standard operating procedure for Groups IO, until new members can post acceptable messages and are shown to be responsible group members. Unfortunately, in the case of the new group entitled "[redacted]" ([redacted]@groups.io), the owner appears to have created the group and then disappeared into thin air. She is neither approving nor denying messages that are posted to the group. Nor is she "unmoderating" new members. So in essence, the group "[redacted]@groups.io" is useless. There are six members in the group. I have personally posted several messages to the group, but none of my messages have been approved or rejected. The statistics on the front page of the group indicates there are six members and 0 conversation threads. Is there anything that can be done so that the six members can post messages and have those ?messages show up?

It's possible the group owner has not yet completed the transfer process and is not even monitoring the group yet. How many members are in the original yahoo group? If there are a lot more than 6, I would probably just wait for the transfer to occur, and/or contact the group owner via yahoo.
?
BTW, moderating posts by new members is not "standard operating procedure" in . It's just one of the options available to group owners to prevent spam.
?
In answer to your specific question, no, there's nothing that can be done so that you can post to the group. It's entirely up to the group owner to start being active there.?

p.s. In looking at the original yahoo group, I see that there are about 250 members. So it seems the group owner has simply not yet done the transfer process.?
?
(I also see that the group is only for "boy kitties." Unfair!!!)

p.p.s. Looking again I see that there are only 29 members in the original group (not 250), It's still a lot more than 6, and my guess is still that she may not have done the transfer yet.?

THE SWIGG CATS,

... the owner of one [Yahoo] group recently created a Groups IO

As with Yahoo Groups, the moderation policy for a Groups.io group is set by the group's management (mods with the permission to change it, or owners). It may be that the defaults for a new group include moderation of posts, I don't recall.

Unfortunately, in the case of the new group entitled "[redacted]" ...
the owner appears to have created the group and then disappeared into
thin air. ...
Is there anything that can be done so that the six members can post
messages and have those messages show up?
I'm in agreement with what J wrote: not much time has elapsed yet and it may be that the owner of the Groups.io group does not consider it "active" yet - that it was created primarily as a placeholder or test bed for learning while waiting to see what happens with the Yahoo Group.

You didn't mention whether the Yahoo Group is still active, or whether the management of it has made any announcements about moving to Groups.io. If the Yahoo Group is still active then there's probably no reason to be concerned about the Groups.io group yet.

So, if you haven't already, one thing to try is contacting the group management to see what they have to say. Use the "Owner" contact email address for both the Yahoo Group and the Groups.io group. The addresses are listed on the groups' home pages.

To address your question directly, as far as I know Groups.io has not yet set any policy or procedure in place to handle situations where the group management becomes unresponsive. So your best bet for that would probably be to contact [email protected] for assistance. But I'd let that wait until you've exhausted other avenues.

We suspect that of the 250 members showing in the Yahoo! version of [redacted], most have stopped participating but failed to unsubscribe from the group. We think that in reality, there are only six members who are active in [redacted] at this time. The concern is that so many Yahoo! group members have migrated to Facebook, Twitter, or other ¡°social media¡± groups, and activity in most Yahoo! groups has tapered off so drastically in the past few years. Now that Verison is or soon will be taking over Yahoo! groups, they may decide to modify the functionality of such groups or do away with them entirely.

?

Earlier today I created a new Groups.IO Group called DaCentralCatelligenceAgency. If Verison does alter the Yahoo! groups into something we older folks do not care to use, or does away with the Yahoo! groups entirely, we will already have in place a Groups.IO group with an owner who will monitor it on a daily basis. Oh ¡ and ¡°Bond Gurlz¡± are allowed to be members of the new Groups.IO group

?

I see you sign your posts as ¡°J Catlady¡±. How many cats own you?

?Hi, the yahoo group is actually showing only 29 members. I was looking at the message count for the month.?

¡°Bond Gurlz¡± are allowed to be members of the new Groups.IO group
Thanks, I'll check that out. ;)

I am currently owned by 4 cats.

p.s. Shal, I'm hijacking this thread: do you know if the block quote in this new editor is fully functional? It seems not to work if you've touched the text in any way prior to invoking it. It's driving me nuts...
