View history of all edits to a group's wiki? #moderators #owner #wiki

Is there any way to see ALL the edits to a group's wiki?
Currently I can only figure out how to see the edits to whatever page I'm looking at so I have no idea what content is being added.
As a group owner it would seem that I could be in danger legally if a member added or edited pages that contained illegal content.
It would also be nice to be able to see if the wiki was being used as they are designed, as a community knowledge sharing platform.
Is anyone else contributing? Are they doing a "good" job or could they use a little training?

Bill -- Yes. On any wiki page, click the "xx revisions" link at upper right (where "xx" is the number of revisions). This will return a page of links to all the revisions of that page.

If you select any two checkboxes on the revisions page and click the "Compare Revisions" button, this will display the differences...kinda. It doesn't always work perfectly.

As a group owner it would seem that I could be in danger legally if a member added or edited pages that contained illegal content.
There is no system in place to send you a notification when a page is edited, short of monitoring the Activity Log. If you are truly concerned about this you can always restrict all wiki revisions to Moderators/Owners (Admin>Settings>Features>Wiki>Permissions) or instead at the page level at the time of creation (click the "only Moderators can edit this page" checkbox).?

Again, the Activity Log will tell you if someone is contributing (look for entries saying "updated wiki page"). As for whether they are doing a good job, you will have to keep tabs on this yourself and apply your own criteria.?There is no software solution to that (too bad, Wikipedia could really benefit from something like that).

Bruce,
Your last answer was just what I was looking for, This platform has so many capabilities!
Thank you so much.

Bruce,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. As per usual, the answers were right there, I just didn¡¯t know where to look.

Thanks to your direction I investigated more thoroughly and here is what I found, as well as some thoughts about wikis in general.

1.???? To view wiki activity, you must be either an Owner or Moderator

2.???? Within the Admin sub-menu, Activity is the bottom option.
To view Wiki activity you will have to individually check the following options from the drop-down menu:

1.???? Added image to wiki

2.???? Added wikipage

3.???? Deleted image from wiki

4.???? Deleted wiki revision

5.???? Deleted wikipage

6.???? Modified wikipage

There are valid reasons for monitoring the activity on your wiki, they include but are not limited to:

  1. Check content to ensure it meets the group's standards of conduct
  2. Verify content fits within the group's scope
  3. Check formatting
  4. Check links
  5. Check for copyright infringement
  6. See who is actually using the wiki
    1. Helps to see if it is being used by the group as a repository
    2. To encourage their continued participation
    3. To help them with technical aspects

What should be our reaction when someone does something that is "against the rules"?

Getting other people to participate is truly the biggest challenge any wiki creator faces, the problems listed above are secondary.

I have been promoting wikis for over 10 years and have NEVER had anyone do something intentionally malicious.
They have made mistakes, but that is what they were, mistakes, honest mistakes.

Do you want to?discourage?them? Make them angry? There is a REALLY easy way to accomplish this:
Delete their post.

However, if you want to?encourage?them to continue to contribute, just change their behavior, there is a much more productive way to do it.
Communicate privately with them and let them know what needs to be changed, explaining the reasons why.
Ask?them?to make the necessary changes.
Be kind about it.
Thank them for participating.

Usually a lot of thought and effort goes into creating a wikipage,?
Much more than most messages.

Respect their effort.

Bill

Only in the Activity log.? Anyone can go to a wiki page that is available to them and click on the number of revisions at the upper right to see them all, when they were made, and who made them.? (Unless a moderator has deleted some/all of the revisions.)

Hi Bill,

Thanks so much for a really constructive reply - I'm about to look at GMFs Wiki to see if i can find a way to save your message (apart from copy / paste).

I'm a new List Admin exile from the Rootsweb Mailing List demise and I've been encouraging my fellow List Admins to make more use of it - I've found answers to most things I've wanted.

I made a wikipage?Monitoring Wiki Activity.
I am by no means an expert on the subject, I just gathered information from various messages on a few boards and tried to make sense of it all.
Anyone who sees either a mistake or notices missing content, PLEASE edit the page, help us all get smarter!
