Username not set?

I have two members that are flagged with the message: username is not set.
They have a username along with their e-mail address.
What do I need to do to fix it?
Thanks,
Richard

Do you mean USER ID or DISPLAY NAME? I don't think there is such a thing as "username".

It's in your Account settings. Open your account, click on the Identity tab, and click on the Edit button for your account profile. You'll see a box to create a unique identifier for yourself, which will be prepended with the @ sign.

At this point it isn't really used for anything, but [per Shal] it might be resurrected someday if GIO ever adds the capability to tag someone [like Facebook].?

I know, but...

Does anyone know if that page has been changed? I would have put money on the headings being "User ID" and "Display Name"; they are now "Account Profile" and "Group Profile".

From the perspective of the Group I moderate any change of headings here makes a difference; we operate an archive (not hosted by Groups.io) and access to it requires the member to enter (amongst other things) their Display Name. We chose that "name" because IIRC that's what Groups.io called it. It looks as though we are now going to have to edit our instructions, not that doing that is a major issue.

Unless my memory is playing serious tricks on me the two "headings" have been changed; can anyone confirm or otherwise? However, the point I made above is still valid; "username" isn't one of the options. If someone is receiving messages saying that their "userrname" has not been set? it suggests an incompatability between Settings and a specific stock message.

Further to my post above (timed 9.22 pm UK time) I have just done a bit more digging. While the Settings > Identity page talks of a "Group Profile" a check of the members list on "my" group lists the corresponding column as "Display Name".

If this anomaly persists it could turn into yet another point of confusion for members.

Grr...

Chris

Do I conclude that nothing needs to be done?
I looked into his Profile and cannot change it.
It cannot be my Profile intended.
The member has not posted anything yet.
I saw nothing in the Settings that seemed to affect this.

The exact "error" message follows.

User name is not set. View Profile
Display Name

That's correct. All my subscribers show the same thing. Nothing to see here.

Chris,

Does anyone know if that page has been changed? I would have put money
on the headings being "User ID" and "Display Name"; they are now
"Account Profile" and "Group Profile".
Edit your Account or Group profile to see and edit your User Name and Display Name fields. The User Name can be edited only in the Account profile (it is perforce the same in all group subscriptions, unlike the rest which can be customized per-group).

Possibly User Name was once called User ID, but that would have been a very long time ago. The page rearrangement that created the Identity page as we have it now, with a list of Profiles (Account, plus one per group) is much more recent.

... requires the member to enter (amongst other things) their Display
Name. We chose that "name" because IIRC that's what Groups.io called
it. It looks as though we are now going to have to edit our
instructions, not that doing that is a major issue.
Also lost in the dim past (but apparently still stuck in Mark's mind) is "Full Name" - that's what Display Name was once called. But Display Name has for a long time been the correct term for what is seen on the group's web pages to identify members' postings and uploads.

If someone /is/ receiving messages saying that their "userrname" has
not been set it suggests an incompatability between Settings and a
specific stock message.
This text is seen by moderators at the top of the page for an individual in the Members list. It is correct as stated, referring to whether that member has set their User Name. If set, the User Name is displayed there.
