Any suggestions on how to able to "act like I don't have any accounts" and just go the normal route of a brand new user of GIO?You'll need another email account (or subscribe to a different group.)? You can't use the subscribe address for your own group using the email address that's in your account.? A subscription here, via email, is pretty much the same as you're used to.? No need to visit the site at all.? I'm using a different email address.? That's the odd part.
This is part of my testing, so I doubt I will be going in this way.? I'm trying to avoid the website completely. I will look at the link you sent, it looks like the answer, without me having to torture myself with all this testing. ? Thank you. |

Right now I'm a trying to subscribe via email using <list-name>[email protected]What do you mean "when I click that"? What do you click? When I do a test by trying to subscribe by sending an e-mail to [email protected], the test user gets an e-mail telling him to "complete" his subscription by replying to the message, but there is no link in that e-mail that one can click (except for the e-mail address itself, but that is because my e-mail program automatically changes e-mail addresses into links). On some other mailing list systems that I have seen, the reply sent in request to a "subscribe" or "join" e-mail also contains a unique link that one can click in order to confirm one's subscription (and one's e-mail address), but the IO reply does not have that, unfortunately. I use MS Edge, so I tried Internet Explorer and Chrome, same results.A lot of the newer browsers/devices insist on remembering your login information so they can automatically log you in when you go to a site.? Sometimes you have to dig, but can (always?) find a way to turn it off. Hello all, Thank you for all the responses.? 1. Bruce, the aliases is definitely something to watch for going forward, one of those not obvious settings and subsequent problem.? I'm not using aliases yet, but that's good advice. 2. By "when I click that", I thought I meant that on the homepage for my group, down near the bottom, under GROUP EMAIL ADDRESSES, then Subscribe:, there is a link called? "main+subscribe@..." which brings up your default email client.? However, the rest of testing notes aren't completely making sense with that, so I am trying to reconstruct my testing.? I'm not sure why I wrote it that way, my apologies, it's not clear. 3. The comment about newer browsers retaining information, I'm thinking perhaps cookies, is something I need to try out. 4. As for "use a different browser", what I mean is that I tried my testing on 3 different browsers, MS Edge, MS Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.? I was thinking that if I used a browser that I hadn't used before on the GROUPS.IO website, then it shouldn't know anything about my use of GROUPS.IO, not in cookies or anywhere else it keeps information.? Also, occasionally, a website will not work properly on MS Edge, but it will work on one of the others.? I don't think this is the case here though. I will work my way through all of these responses and get back to you. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Darlene Dimitrie,?DVHH Mailing List Administrator |

I have tested a number of browsers (Vivaldi, Otter, Firefox), and the "Log out" link in the top right corner always successfully logs me out, and then I have to actually log in again if I want to be logged in. Darlene,
If it helps any, this is how I perform the same testing scenario as what you're trying to do: 1. I use my default web browser (Firefox) and which I have already logged into GIO with my admin email account, and since it remembers it, I don't have to log-in again, so anytime I click some GIO link in some email, it goes to this browser. (this is important to remember as you'll see later on) 2. I do whatever admin work needs to be done to whatever group. 3. Then I want to test how the subscription process works (or any other GIO functionality for that matter, where I want to see how things look/work from a regular/different user's POV), I create a test email account somewhere, and from that email, I send the subscribe request. 4. I then open a different browser, Chrome in my case, the test browser, which I will use to test the links the subscriber will get, as you can have a different email address logged into GIO from different browsers and can use them simultaneously without interfering with each other, at least with Firefox and Chrome, I have not tested it with Edge, but it seems per your experience Edge should work the same. 5. This is an important step, while I try to remember to always log off GIO from the test browser when I'm done testing, in order to ensure that I didn't forget logging off from a previous testing session, I first go to on the test browser, and if I get the login screen then great, if not, I log off; otherwise my testing wouldn't work! 6. I then proceed to look at the GIO-generated emails on the test account and check/do whatever I'm testing at the time. 7. Here's the trick though, I do not click on any URL link on any GIO subscription (or otherwise) test email message I get on the testing email address, because this will open that link in my default browser, not on my test browser, hence I would see (in my default browser) that same link I clicked on from my admin's account perspective, not from the test user's perspective on the test browser. So I instead copy the link text from the email, paste it into Notepad first (which will paste the link as plain text, strip any underlying URL code, re-copy it from there, then go to the test browser and paste it there.? I will now see on the test browser the same screen the test user would see if they clicked on that link on their computer. (I suspect this part is what you're not doing quite right) 8. I can then proceed and do whatever from-the-subscriber's-perspective testing I want to do, on the test browser exclusively.? If I need to go and change something on the group and retest, I do that from the default browser where I'm logged in as admin, but everything else related to what the user/subscriber will see/get, is done in the test browser. 9. When finished testing, I log off from the test browser, and close it, and I'm done. Never had a problem this way. Cheers, Christos |

The way I found to log in as a different email address is to clean out my cookies.? That way groups.io doesn't remember me.? Naturally I am no longer in my site as my first email addy any longer but I can then see as a member instead of as an owner/moderator.

Once again, thank you everyone.? I have gotten a lot of valuable information from everyone.
Thank you Christos for that very detailed explanation.? I will try it out. First, the answer to my troubles, at least for the email address I managed to subscribe today, was to clear out the cookies.? I chose Google Chrome as my "testing" browser and use MS Edge as my "live" browser. I don't use Google Chrome for anything else, so I don't have to worry about deleting cookies and other info for other websites. It worked very simply, never shipped me to the groups.io website, which is what I am looking for.? This is for users who strictly want to deal with the email address. I will review all of your comments again to see whatever other nuggets I can find. Thank you Darlene |
