Size isn't the only factor. Age is also a factor, in two distinct ways. 1) An older service is more likely to have been noticed and whitelisted by more mailbox providers. 2) An older service (I'm looking at you, Yahoo Groups) is less likely to have implemented the relatively new standards for FBLs. So they may struggle with deliverability problems without any feedback from the receiving services as to why. Indeed, sporadic delivery problems is, and long has been, a perennial problem reported in Y!Group moderator forums.
I don't know that it is ONLY , but then I don't have contact with a lot of other vendors of email list services. Perhaps Groups.io is indeed rare or even unique in taking such an aggressively proactive approach to guarding its reputation as a spam-free service.
