Stop Reply All sending to Sender AND Group?
Hi - I'm new to this and am configuring and testing a group and sub-groups. One of the things I wanted to achieve was to make the default 'reply to' the sender rather than the group. That's easy to configure BUT if someone uses 'reply all' then the sender gets two copies of the reply, one sent direct to them and one via the group. I'm guessing there is nothing I can do about that as it is outside the control of the groups.io platform.
However, just to make life difficult, if I set the 'reply to' to group (the default), both 'reply' and 'reply all' options in an email send to the group and neither replies to the sender. Is this an issue with my email client (Apple Mail)? Or is there something I'm setting incorrectly? I could live with 'reply to' as the group IF members also had the option to reply to sender only (without having to manually change the destination email address). The background to all of this is that I am trying to set up a system where members can, if they want, just use email to send and receive messages from the group without having to get involved in logging in to the forum, and I need to make it is easy and intuitive to use as possible. Thanks for any advice! Richard |

I have not removed other reply options. When I click on reply to a Group email, a reply message only goes to the group. It does not cc the sender.? There is a Reply to line added into the email that takes care of this. Additionally, the email footer gives me the option of replying to the group or to the sender only. Clicking on one opens an email in my Apple Mail with the sender's email address in the To box. If I choose reply to sender the subject is automatically reconfigured with Private added in: Private: Re: [TEST FRANCES] test reply to reply all Here is the footer. ?|?Reply To Group?|?Reply To Sender?|?Mute This Topic?|? This works as long as you don't remove other reply options in Admin, Settings. If you remove other reply options, the footers are: View/Reply Online (#662) | Reply To Group | Mute This Topic | New Topic Of course, a member can reply online as well, but I understand that you would like members to mainly work through email only. Additionally, if someone belongs to a subgroup and only wants to get subgroup email right away, their subscription should be set to full featured digest or even Special Notices only. The subscriptions are separate for subgroups and main group. See this help wiki page about footers - ?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Footers Frances ? -- Moving to Groups.io (without easy transfer)

Hi Frances,
Many thanks for the quick reply. I haven't removed other options so the footer does have the 'Reply to Sender' etc. But when you say there is "a Reply to line added into the email" how do you configure that? If I could automatically add that line in near the start of the email that would be a possible solution. Thanks, Richard |

The new message will have the Subject line filled in, but will not contain a quote of the original (for that use Reply online). Note that proper functioning of this link is subject to the capabilities of your email interface and possibly to the settings in your operating system (default email client application). And it does with Apple Mail. Frances ? -- Moving to Groups.io (without easy transfer)

Some ignore the Reply To: and use the From:? Since all messages are actually sent from the group, this causes problems when the default is Reply To Sender. Thanks for the replies. I am now confused again though... I am getting the following footer: Richard |

I've been adding and?removing a couple of users repeatedly to test the configuration so?maybe that's upsetting it? What is your own subscription setting? And in your account preferences (top right corner on your group homepage, second menu item), what is your editor preference? Mine is HTML. So I get all tools in the wiki, etc. And then check out this page on email footers: Frances -- Moving to Groups.io (without easy transfer)

Sorry - let's try again - maybe it doesn't like the urls. The footer is either like this:
Or basically the same but with the urls fully expanded and looking horrible (same email client, same email account, same thread). And then once I got this (which is what I thought it should be): View/Reply Online (#20) | Reply To Group | Reply To Sender | Mute This Topic | New Topic
?
Your Subscription | Contact Group Owner | Unsubscribe [email address]

Hi Frances - thanks - looks like you've nailed it. I changed the preferences for the group to force HTML emails and I am now getting the footer I expected (critical for my application as I want to make it easy for people to reply to the sender rather than the whole group if they want to).
Is there any downside to forcing HTML emails? Thanks, Richard |

That would give you want you want, I believe. There has been discussions about forcing HTML for all your subscribers. This thread, for example ?-?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/27598 About downsides -?
I do like Force HTML because I think the footers work well.
