someone who unsubscribes then is able to resubscribe without my permission

开云体育

My group just recently was transferred (almost 2,000) from yahoo to groups.io.? So I’ve spent the last few hours cleaning up problems, most of which I made myself.? For example, I removed the ‘first two posts moderated’ rule and allowed all to immediately post.? If I was to do it over, I certainly wouldn’t remove that option (something those of you in the process of transferring might take into consideration).? What has happened is members mail boxes have been flooded with “I’m just testing’ types of messages which when you have 2,000 members can be overwhelming.

Here is my question for the gurus—with yahoo if someone unsubscribed themselves then they could NOT get resubscribed unless I approved the process.? With groups.io I just had a member who had unsubscribed be able to just resubscribe herself (based on the message I got from groups.io).? Is this normal?? I’m not saying it is necessary a BAD situation as I haven’t had a chance to check it out, namely to be sure she wasn’t ‘moderated’ then came back on and wasn’t.? So, is there a setting I can change (as I didn’t see one) that addresses what happens when someone unsubscribes then wants back on?

For what it is worth.? The canned message that goes to people AFTER the transfer makes it too easy—in my opinion—to ‘unsubscribe’—I lost a LOT of subscribers who just didn’t read the info I sent to them BEFORE the transfer.? I added my OWN wording in the space I was allowed to add, but I couldn’t change the ‘canned groups.io’ wording so I also had a lot of people go directly TO the groups.io page and things REALLY got confusing to them as they thought they had to subscribe again and misinterpreted the cover page thinking they could use hashtags (I have that function unavailable to members right now) wiki (also disabled right now) etc and when they couldn’t they sent me one of hundreds of emails I’ve gotten this morning.

All in ALL I would STILL make the switch from Yahoo to Groups.io WITHOUT a doubt.? Just saying it COULD have been a little smoother for me—but based on future potential with what my members can now do that they couldn’t on Yahoo AND the fact I can ACTUALLY get owner/moderator help, this move was a no-brainer.? I feel VERY fortunate this venue was available for a replacement to Yahoo.? THANKS to all you on this site who are so helpful.

Go to Admin->Settings->Spam Control. I assume you have it set as "New Users Moderated" here, with some minimum number of posts. This setting will not keep anybody from resubscribing...but if someone unsubscribes and then resubscribes, then they will go back on moderated status.?

It's my understanding that if you want to keep people from subscribing to your group at will, you must use the Restricted Membership option.?

Hope this helps,

They CAN resubscribe themselves if they ‘left’ due to marking a message spam. It used to confuse me, too. The language used in the notification could be more clear. I would check whether the word ‘spam’ appears in your original notification or log entry that they left. If so, then they probably resubscribed via the automatic email they got from the system allowing them to do so.

Thanks Bruce.? The group IS set up as restricted, which is why I was surprised when the person was added back to the group WITHOUT my approval.

Harlan,

For what it is worth. The canned message that goesto people AFTER the
transfer makes it too easy—in my opinion—to ‘unsubscribe’—I lost a LOT
of subscribers who just didn’t read the info I sent to them BEFORE the
transfer.
There has been some speculation in another thread that some of this results from members who wanted to unsubscribe from the Yahoo Group, but due to glitches were unable to do so. Now, presented the opportunity afresh, they took it.

I added my OWN wording in the space I was allowed to add, but I
couldn’t change the ‘canned groups.io’ wording ...
I'm a little confused by this.

The Invite type of Member Notice has boilerplate, but it isn't used during a transfer. The Welcome type of Member notice is used, if Active, but you control the entirety of that message body. There is also, if you don't uncheck it, a "You have been added to ..." message from Groups.io, but you cannot provide any text to that -- unless that is a Premium feature?

... so I also had a lot of people go directly TO the groups.io page
and things REALLY got confusing to them as they thought they had to
subscribe again and misinterpreted the coverpage thinking they could
use hashtags (I have that function unavailable to members right now)
wiki (also disabled right now) etc and when they couldn’t they sentme
one of hundreds of emails I’ve gotten this morning.
Oh, you mean they went to the Groups.io home page first, and saw the feature description for the product? Heh.

The groups I've transferred have all been fairly small (a few hundred members) and had gone fairly dormant prior to the transfer. So I haven't had a lot of experience yet with members confused by all the features of Groups.io.

Shal,
Thanks for the time in making the reply. I'm swamped right now with all the
little nuances that are popping up with the transfer of almost 2,000
members--I will spend more time reviewing your reply then get back to you if
I have more questions. YOU are one of the MAIN reasons I've moved from
Yahoo to Groups.io, so THANKS!!!!
