Settings for digest options
So, in doing some housecleaning, I changed the delivery option of several of the groups that I am a non-moderator member of to Plain Digest from Individual Emails. One group, though, did not have the option for Plain Digest available on its menu. I chose Full Featured Digest, and now that I have received one, I don't care for it. Which leads to two questions.
1. Is there a way I, as a subscriber, force the option of Plain DIgest? If yes, how? If not, why is it allowed that a group owner can limit how I look at the messages? 2. As owner of another group, I looked everywhere and I don't see how that limitation was even put on. What am I missing? Dave |

In Settings an owner can optionally select either of these two options:
Force HTML Emails
Make all emails HTML and remove the plain text digest option.
Normalize HTML Emails
Strip all different fonts and colors from HTML emails. Now I'll go ask the owner of the other group why that setting is on.Some groups use it so that the footers in the digest are consistent (and have live links). He removed the Force HTML option on his group and I was able to make the switch to Plain Digest. But I still don't understand why a group NEEDS to have the ability to NOT let me choose the format for a digest I'm going to read. I LIKE not having live links in my digests, and if a subscriber has trouble with getting his/her preferred format of digest, the group owner should be able to steer them in the right direction. As you can see, I don't like being told what I want. Dave |

There are two checkboxes...one for "Force HTML emails" and another for "Plain Text only." If you don't select one or the other, then an incoming plain-text message will be forwarded with a plain-text footer appended, and an incoming html email will be forwarded with an html footer. Such behavior tends to cause confusion, so it's entirely sensible to select one or the other.* Groups are not a democracy, and the group Owner has the final say on matters of this nature.? Regards, Bruce *These two boxes are mutually incompatible and I don't know what happens if you happen to check both of them. |
Sorry, I have to quibble here. While group owners technically have the final say, some groups do function as a democracy, with 'owners' who merely contribute administrative duties to the group.
I've not had this particular problem with digests, but I agree that users should be able to choose whether they want plain text or html, and not have that left to group managers. My own problem with digests remains that context gets eliminated in discussion threads, which also affects our ability to forward mailings. I was initially really excited about Groups.io, and for the most part I still like it, but I wish users had more control over digests. Isis |

It's much easier to force HTML so that only one explanation for how it works is needed.? On a more technical group, having multiple options would be less likely to cause problems. My own problem with digests remains that context gets eliminated in discussion threadsThat's easily cured by not bottom quoting.? Bottom posting or interspersing will keep everything together. Most of us don't write anything when we forward a petition or some other action alert though, so I've had the experience a lot that members on digests get blank emails. When I realized it was an issue, there was some bug with it even when people did write something. I've not checked back into that since, but I'm hoping that bug got fixed by now. I'll track down the thread about that, so I don't hijack this one.
I have noticed though that almost all platforms I've worked with have varying problems with digests. I think there was only one Mailman list I was on once that displayed each email in digest in perfect html (my preference for that list), and retained attachments, and the whole thread of a conversation, and didn't truncate longer posts (just discovered Google Groups does that, and Yahoo Groups did too). Digests seem to be one of the trickiest things to do well. Isis |

I know groups.io does it in digests, but unfortunately not in individual messages. I think it's an OPTION in googlegroups groetjes, Ronaldo |
