Problem with Norton

I have been trying to launch a new groups.io site for our neighborhood, but while testing we got a very scary message from Norton saying the site is unsafe - identify theft. I believe the site is safe, but if I release this and people get this message, it will definitely scare them off.

I've tried reaching the groups.io developer but the support email is not working and I've tried to contact Norton, but of course am not getting a response.

Does anyone have any advice? Thanks. Pat

It is not my intent to discourage the moves to IO, but all these messages about Norton, AVAST, and whatever does concern me. Even if there are no threats and these messages are false warnings, if I was a member of a group that got transferred over to IO and started getting these messages, I would immediately unsubscribe no matter how much the owner would claim they are false warnings. What is causing IO to trigger these warnings from these antivirus and malware programs? If they are not happening in YG but are here, why? It seems like a high priority should be devoted to correcting this.

Pat,

I have been trying to launch a new site for our neighborhood, but while testing we got a very scary message from Norton saying the site is unsafe - identify theft.

When did that happen? There was an incident involving false reports from several different AV and security tools about a week ago. See past incidents for February 26th, here:

?
I believe the site is safe, but if I release this and people get this message, it will definitely scare them off.

Hopefully it won't happen again - hasn't happened before in the three and a half years I've been here.
?
I've tried reaching the developer but the support email is not working

What? That is, what do you mean by "not working"?

If you send an email message to [email protected] you should get an automated acknowledgement fairly promptly. How long it takes for a human response can vary, of course.
?
Does anyone have any advice?

If you see this currently cite it to [email protected] giving as much detail about it as you can. Screenshots may be helpful. If it was a few days ago no problem, as that incident was cleared up with Norton and the others.

One bit of spam shows in one group and the antivirus sites flagged the entire domain. It's unfortunate when people overreact and mess up a good thing for everybody else. Hopefully the group owners here have more sense than that.

It's even not spam. The message is still there:

The phishing warning was a pure false alarm.

Did you try clearing the cache on your browser?

Hi Pat,

Do you keep your Norton updated? If not, get it up to date, not all updates are automatic.

I ask this because about a week ago, a bunch of us went through that and we had to turn off Norton Safe Web on Chrome and the Norton Toolbar on Firefox. I called Norton Support and after 2 hours on the phone, re-installation of Norton and Chrome, the tech gave up and said she was going to push it up a level and they would call me. I never heard anymore but last Tuesday the problem stopped.

Like another member suggested, clear your browser cookies and history. If this doesn't work then you may want to disable Norton and enable MS Defender or one of the other free security programs to see if detects the same "identity theft." If it does, then you may have a real problem.

I have always refused to use Norton because it takes over control of your computer.? Everyone who I have come in contact with using Norton have ditched it.? There are plenty of other Anti-virus, Firewall programs out there that do the job just as well if not better without trying to take control.? I only had it for a few minutes because the person uploading a program for me didn't pay attention and didn't uncheck the box asking if you wanted Norton to be installed.

The first time I tried to do something Norton didn't like it tried to block me so I killed it and went back to my previous trusty program and didn't look back.

I have had many systems since but SOPHOS and Avast appear, to me at least the best at the moment.? There are free and paid versions of course of both.

That's my "newbie's" penny's worth, new to this group but not computers, etc.

Cheers. Lola.

Hi,
? I use Norton (Symantec Endpoint Protection 14.0) and have no problems.
My email client is usually Thunderbird.? My ISP for email is small and not
one of?the "main stream" - they use readily available email spam services
that tend to be a bit behind the big names.

? I am guessing that the real problem is the email services that allow
their users to report spam/undesirable emails ... and accept it as a
legitimate report 'the first time' (i.e. without any sanity check).
? To paraphrase an old adage ...

? ?One man's spam is another man's useful emails ...
