Privacy

There are two choices in the Privacy section of Setting:
Listed in Directory, Private Archives
Not Listed in Directory, Private Archives

I assume archives being private means non-members if the main group cannot view the content of messages. The only thing non-members see is a monthly table containing the number of posts for each day. Is this correct?

I do not understand the significance of being listed in the Directory, or not being listed, mostly because I do not know what the Directory is.

With respect to subgroups, I want members of the main group who are not members of the subgroup to be able to view messages, but to hide messages from non-members of the main group. Is the appropriate setting
Listed in Directory, Public Viewable Archives?

Stan, if you go to:
/search

You can see all the public groups. I am a co-owner of a public group with private archive. You must be a member to read the posts. I also have a few private ones not listed in the directory since they are just for a specific group.

Whether it is a primary or subgroup, private archives means that only members see the message content. All others the table only.

I do not understand the significance of being listed in the Directory,
or not being listed, mostly because I do not know what the Directory
is.
What Frances said: /search

It's a list of those groups that chose to be listed. At the moment it isn't much more than that; that is, no categories or tags or other form of organization.

With respect to subgroups, I want members of the main group who are
not members of the subgroup to be able to view messages, but to hide
messages from non-members of the main group.
You want:
"Listed in parent group, archives viewable by parent group members"

However that choice is no longer available to this subgroup if you have previously chosen Private Archives for it.
