Pictures placed in messages end up bunched up at bottom of message

? ? ? I post a Group called [email protected] where I list astronomy-related events in the SF Bay Area for interested locals to see what is going on. Over the last month and one other time before, pictures I have been posting to individual listings to serve as topic labels have ended up taken off the listings and piled up at the end of the whole message.
? ? ? Seems like a bug in Groups.io and wonder what to do about it. Can Groups.io correct the problem?

You don't mention how you are posting messages (web / app / email) and if email, what client you are using. What method are you using to include your pictures (attach / insert)? Also, when you view the messages, how is that being done (web / app / email) and are there any differences between them? More information will help us to help you.

Andy

In addition to the questions Andy asked, try to determine if you are
doing anything different than you were when this wasn't happening. He
asked about your email client if you are posting by email, so did you
change email clients, like switch from Thunderbird to Outlook, etc.
(insert your email programs here)? If you are posting from the group
website, are you using a different web browser at times?

It may indeed be a bug in the system created when Mark made some other
change, but I would expect it's something you are doing different from
when this didn't happen.

What do you mean “topics labels”?
?
“Individual listing”? ?- each message posted perhaps?
“Taken off the listings”??
A better explanation/”verbal picture” of what's going on might help here v

Could you post screenshots of examples of a prior “successful” message and what you're ending up with now? ?Also if possible a shot of how it looks before you SEND a new one that fails?
Also when you say bunched up - is that in the turned around email? ?or how it appears in the web UI? ?Or Mobil app?

You can see what he's referring to by comparing /g/BayAstro/topic/events_of_week_of_07_15_2024/107225956 and /g/BayAstro/topic/events_of_week_of_09_09_2024/108349544.? If you join the group, you could look at the source code of the messages to see if there are differences? in how the photos were included, say imbedded vs attached.

Ken,

You can see what he's referring to by comparing /g/BayAstro/topic/events_of_week_of_07_15_2024/107225956 and /g/BayAstro/topic/events_of_week_of_09_09_2024/108349544.? If you join the group, you could look at the source code of the messages to see if there are differences? in how the photos were included, say imbedded vs attached.

I had a look at these two message sources and you're using Apple Mail to compose and send in the messages. I'm no expert in message formatting by any means but it looks like the issue is with Apple Mail config or the way you're formatting the messages, has anything changed in its configuration/settings or something, for composing new messages?

One things that's different between the two, a "good" one shows this:
Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
?? ?boundary="Apple-Mail=_92A20DF4-FBC4-4AE9-8049-AED8F143AA17"

--Apple-Mail=_92A20DF4-FBC4-4AE9-8049-AED8F143AA17
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
Content-Type: text/plain;
?? ?charset=utf-8
vs a "bad" one:
Content-Type: multipart/mixed;
?? ?boundary="Apple-Mail=_C7C19F85-0D1F-4876-B71D-3EE8119C5759"

--Apple-Mail=_C7C19F85-0D1F-4876-B71D-3EE8119C5759
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Content-Type: text/plain;
?? ?charset=us-ascii

There are other differences on how the message source is displayed due to the above differences, the good one shows this:
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
vs the bad one:
==============================

plus some other formatting differences due to the Content-Transfer-Encoding difference.

Again, I'm not very knowledgeable in message formatting, but it almost looks like the bad ones were sent strictly as text-only (instead of HTML), and that would cause any embedded inline images to appear at the bottom as (true) attachments. Or something to that effect, things point to the way the messages are formatted when sent in and not due to Groups.io handling.

Cheers,
Christos

For what it is worth, I have been using Apple mail for years, and it has always put any attachments at the end of the message. That is using the paper clip icon for attachments, not copy/paste thru the clipboard.

That occurs because you are attaching a FILE (which just happens to be an image file.) ?Just like attaching a PDF or XLS, the file is placed separate from the message body itself.?
?
Using the insert image tool **should** place (embed) the image where your cursor is located.?

@Christos
?
If that is the case about plain text then I could see how the images get haphazardly (presumably) attached as files after the message.?
?
Sometimes, and I haven't seen any commonslittly to help troubleshoot this, Apple Mail that I compose on my phone will be sent as plain text. ?
No apparent rhyme nor reason.?

I've seen this happen with Tbird as well, I have it set to HTML for new messages but sometimes when I compose a small 3-4 line message to beta without any graphics or such, when the message returns to me it's formatted as plain text (due to the footer style it has), yet other times it isn't, no clue why.

Cheers,
Christos

I have added the images onto an email which goes to [email protected].

Which method are you using to add them?? Attach, embed, link?? As others have said, the type of email, HTML or plain text, can also move them.

I am using the Mail program on a Mac and dropping images directly onto the desired location in the msg. Not sure what to call this, maybe embed or attachment? I start off with an email that looks like this:

and then end up with something that looks like this:

Anyone know what is going on?

I’m Mac and Apple Mail too, and this is a common occurrence with messages I send out that are individually addressed and with Groups (IO and Google). Some recipients receive the image embedded and others receive images at the end. ?I’ve always guessed it is due to the variety of systems between Sender and Recipient. Have not bothered to determine which specifically cause this (e.g. Apple Mail v? to Windows Outlook v?)

?

When which photo or which order of photos is important, I’ve taken to uploading images to an online photo service and sending links. That is a whole series of additional steps, and not for everyone in a group, but worthwhile if the progression is important (e.g. developing a graphic) or context of text is necessary.

The settings of each user make a big difference,
both in the email service they use and in the?
settings of the group they access on Groups.io.

In either case, if the user configures to send
and/or receive messages in "text mode" instead
of "html", the embedded images will become?
attachments. The same thing happens if the?
group owner configures it to "text mode".

This is because you cannot insert images?
into text when you are in "Text Mode".?

Different people may get different results?
when using the same group message?
because of the differences in their settings.

Well, modifying settings sounds like looking for something under Mail/Preferences. But confess I do not see an HTML vs. Text choice anywhere. Where would I find such a thing in Mac Mail? Any help would be appreciated.
