Uncertain future for .io domains?

A member of my group contacted me about this article, which he defined an ethical issue, expressing his worries about the possible future of .io domains.?

I don't know if this has been already discussed here.
Any thoughts?

The article is from 2019 when there was some issues about post-Brexit (maybe).

See this newer article:

See disadvantages and conclusion.
The Dominion .io used to be solely one of the country code TLDs, specifically for sites in the Indian Ocean. However, it is no longer country-specific, as Google recognizes it as a generic top-level domain, serving a much larger audience.

I read the article, and perhaps it will turn out to be a tempest in a teacup. Yes, it's an ethical issue to a point, but there are a lot more practical?things that I think the world needs to deal with first. If Groups.io is able to continue as it is, then I think we should. If not, I will trust the group owners to either come up with something or repatriate our individual groups' files to us.

Just my two cents - or two pence, depending on where you are....

I'm not worried. I understood that Mark started e-Groups (been with it since
then) and sold to Yahoo. Ran Yahoo until they were sold to AOL and the started
Groups.io and transferred our groups over after making him a moderator with full
privileges.

A group owner can do that at any time, just export everything.? May not be a bad idea to do it at least once per year.

Lots of detailed information can be found in the Owners Manual and Members Manual.

AM| I'm not worried.

And I can't even imagine WHY anyone
should be worried about this...

In the worst case scenario our domain
can change, there is no need to worry
about this issue. It's not our problem.

Thank you, Frances, and everyone else for their thoughts. I'm not particularly worried, actually.
I don't think I would have the stamina to move my large group again, after moving it from Listbot to Yahoogroups and then all the way to Groups.io. So I'll just accept whatever happens.

Well, if our domain were to change trying to retrain our users would
become our problem...

I'm not worried because, no matter what happens to the islands,
someone will end up with ownership of the .io TLD. They
won't want to lose the revenue stream that comes from it.

No new thoughts, but a few points to emphasize:

?

  1. If the .io domain is deprecated, all articles we¡¯ve seen so far point to a three-to-five-year transition period before the .io domain is removed.
  2. This provides plenty of time for Mark and his team to develop and execute a plan to guide ¡°Groups¡± through transition,
  3. It is the top-level domain name .io that is potentially being retired, not ¡°Groups¡± itself,
  4. Groups itself, i.e. the collection of files, photos, data, messages, and membership data, physically exists wherever Mark and his team have stored it, either in their own datacenter, or purchased space on a server somewhere,
  5. .io is just a domain, Mark and crew can simply register a new domain . .? ¡°Groups.someothertopdomain¡±, and for starters redirect traffic from groups.io to groups.somothertop domain, which links to the existing physical location.? Over time, instead of referencing ¡°groups.io¡±, folks begin referencing ¡°groups.someothertopdomain¡±.? Eventually all references to the old domain are replaced by references to the new. The only thing users would need to do is to upgrade their groups e-mail address in their personal address book and replace any links they¡¯ve retained new upgraded links to the new source. From the user perspective, pretty much like when various groups were migrated to groups.io from older platforms ¨C On Friday, your group was located via your old domain.? On Monday you sent your e-mails to the new domain.? Actually, perhaps even simpler if Mark can use re-direct options.

This is definitely not something any of us need to lose any sleep over.
