No attachment/photo icon when composing on web
Hi all - hope you can help me with this frustration.
When I compose messages on the website there is no icon for attachments or photos - see image. I do see the paperclip and picture icons in the menu when I compose here. It is not that I am simply missing them. I assume it is a setting, but I've tried fiddling with every setting I can think of to no avail.? Can anyone help? Thanks so much! Helen |
Helen,
I am assuming you saw the photo settings in Settings. You need to scroll fairly far down! You said you see the image icon in the toolbar. Is it greyed out? Can't you click on it to open it? In Groups.io, the image goes in the footer of the email or post. Not in the body. At least that is my experience.? Frances PS I couldn't open your image. -- /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki /static/help More help: use the search button at the top of the Messages list. |
Thanks Frances - appreciate your quick reply.
My question is about attachments to messages sent in my own group. Our members mainly want to attach pdf's not so much images. Our toolbars do not include the attachment or image icons. When I said I could see them, I meant as I am composing now in this group owners forum I can see them in your toolbar, but they do not appear in the toolbar in my forum. In my group settings, I have attachments set to 'moderate'. I have also tried with 'allow', but that seemed to make no difference. I also experimented with permissions for uploading files, but that seemed to make no difference either. Maybe I need to allow images as well as attachments to get the attachments icon to show? Thanks |

The Group I moderate does not allow attachments and as a result the Attach tab is not present in the "compose" toolbar. In other groups of which I am a member where attachments are allowed then the attach tab is present. I was just about to press send on this when another thought sprung to mind; how long - established is your group? If it has been around for a while then it is possible that your available storage has been filled up, and that "the system" is blocking any further attempts at uploading anything. I suggest that it definitely worth checking how much storage you have used. However, IIRC there is a quirk in Groups.io to the effect that a look at "emailed photos" (which is where attachments get stored) will show photos but won't show attached documents. I'll keep any further ideas about this until you have had the chance to check the above points. Chris |
Thanks Chris - not a silly question at all. I don't think it was either of those things but you did help me localise the main issue I am having.
I think the problem is that the toolbar is not consistent. Sometimes it does have the attachment/photos icons and sometimes not. I haven't figured out all the situations but here's the one that is bugging me right now. I run a group for a lot of non-computer-savvy people, so I often have to do a bit of moderation for their messages, including editing text and adding attachments. When I open a pending message to edit and approve, the toolbar lacks the attachment and photo icons - and this is where I most miss them, as I can't just send a new message by email because that would have my name as sender instead of theirs. Is there a specific setting for adding attachments in that situation? Or maybe there is some technical reason that this toolbar can't allow attachments? If the latter, is there any workaround people can recommend - beyond asking the member to resend their message with the attachment, which is what I currently have to do. Thanks again - really appreciate your assistance. Helen |
Helen, I just tested it with my test group.
I put a topic to moderate so I would have to deal with it. The email came, and of course to edit, I have to click on View this message online. The toolbar was there. But a different toolbar - with clean links but no option for attachment or photos. I am using Safari 12.11 on my MacBook.? A solution for a moderator would be to approve the message if it is complete enough and then reply yourself with the attachment. Or reject it and add a message about the required attachment. (A message section comes up.) Frances -- /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki /static/help More help: use the search button at the top of the Messages list. |
Helen,
When I open a pending message to edit and approve, the toolbar lacksThat's true of all groups, there's no control or setting for it. I think the problem is that the toolbar is not consistent. SometimesAnother case where it does not is when editing a message after it has posted. It is in my opinion an annoying limitation in both circumstances. Here's an old request of mine, you could reply in agreement, or start your own topic: Here's a somewhat newer topic that included both attachments and insert photos in the request: Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
Thanks Frances and Shal
And yes - edit post is another place I have experienced this. It seems like there is no solution at the moment but at least you have confirmed that, so I can stop desperately searching the settings list! If there is ever talk of adding this feature (as per your previous threads) I would definitely vote in favour. Best wishes Helen |
Thanks Shal
I can see the messages you refer to but can't seem to reply. I will just wait patiently till this useful feature is implemented - hopefully BOTH for editing messages from message list AND for editing messages during moderation. Thanks again for your help - it is useful to at least know it is a real limitation! Helen |
Helen,
I can see the messages you refer to but can't seem to reply. Those topics are moderated, so if you posted any replies there it may be a while before Mark gets around to approving them (or not). You haven't posted to the beta group before, so the other issue might be whether you've joined that group, which you would need to do before you can post there. I will just wait patiently till this useful feature is implemented -You're too polite. ;-) Mark welcomes suggestions and even reminders of suggestions. Ignore any naysayers from "the peanut gallery".
