NNTP Server

Hi,
I just had a member ask: "Is there a way to sign up without a nntp server?"
Can someone help with this query?

Thank you!
Howard Hoyt

Either the member is stuck in the 1990s and thinks that your group is a Usenet newsgroup, or else they mean something other than NNTP.

As far as I know, there is no way to sign up WITH an NNTP server.

These are email mailing lists, not Usenet newsgroups.

It may be possible to gate them from mail to news and vice versa (a
GoogleGroups does), but I don't know of anyone who does so.

The only ways to sign up are with email, with an e-mail reader, or with a web
browser by going to the web site.

Is it possible the enquirer is confusing NNTP/Usenet News Feeds with RSS News Feeds?

OK, good joke... But I, p.e., still
use Usenet Newsgroups to this day.
It is an excellent option for really
fast data downloading from the internet.

Regardless of the reason your member is asking the question, I'd simply answer it by saying "Yes - groups.io isn't an NNTP-based service," followed by your standard instructions to join.

Anybody who even is aware of NNTP ought to be aware of SMTP.? Still a very curious question.? Perhaps they imagine groups.io is a service akin to a Usenet grouping, thus could be a moderated newsgroup area.? Not exactly a bad idea, except all newsgroup content is visible to the public.? There are private newsgroups that are not in any typical NNTP feed.? Quite ancient by today's standards but you can operate a private server and employ NNTP standards without joining the feed.??

I was charitably thinking that perhaps the person made a typo or a "think-o" and wrote the wrong something-something-TP in the request.
