New Group Not Being Created From Yahoo Groups

hi -?
it has been a couple of weeks and I have still been unable to see?[email protected]?in YahooGroups. I think the issue is because I have two groups.io groups and I have tried to start the conversion with both (not a great idea). The question is how do I get unstuck?
delete one of the groups.io accounts and start over with the other one? Something else?
thanks!
Cathy

Hi Cathy,

New Group Not Being Created From Yahoo Groups
Just to be clear, you must create the Groups.io group. That's Step 0 of the instructions. From what you say later it sounds like you've done that. Twice.

it has been a couple of weeks and I have still been unable to see
[email protected] in YahooGroups. I think the issue is because I have
two groups.io groups and I have tried to start the conversion with
both (not a great idea).
As far as I know you can only initiate a transfer from a given Y!Group once at a time. But it could be that your second attempt replaced (superseded) the first, and in fact you only have one in progress. Or maybe you can actually have two at a time.

The question is how do I get unstuck?
Follow the instructions, one step at a time, and in the order given.

delete one of the groups.io accounts and start over with the other
one?
You don't need to delete any Accounts nor any Groups.

Note that "account" refers to your personal log-in account, the email address you use to log in to Groups.io. That's separate from any group(s) you may create; your account becomes the initial owner of any group(s) you create.

You may need to modify or cancel any transfers you find in the In Process list. Let us know what you find there if you'd like more advice about it.

Did you invite the transfer agent to join your Yahoo group? The transfer agent will not join without being invited.?Instructions on how to do that can be found at?

To check your transfer status, see?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/8352. If your group name does not appear in the "In Process" drop-down menu at all, you haven't started your transfer yet.

See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/8697?for detailed, step-by-step instructions.

Hope this helps,

For each of the two groups, I have:
1) created the group (someone else created one of them) note they both refer to the same YahooGroup
2) started the transfer process
3) added [email protected] to YahooGroups (i never received a response so the actual user was not ccreated so i couldn't make it the moderator)
4) when I check transfer status, neither appears
thanks!?

You have to actually click in the "In Process" box. It is a drop-down menu.

If you do that, and no groups appear in the drop-down, then either:

-- you didn't start the transfer at all, or
-- the email address that you're logged in under isn't an owner of those GIO group(s).

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Cathy,

1) created the group (someone else created one of them) ...
That someone else would have had to promote you to Owner role, otherwise that Groups.io group would not appear for you on the transfer setup page.

... note they both refer to the same YahooGroup
I'm not certain what you mean, but that's unimportant. There's no technical requirement that the Groups.io group have any mention of the Yahoo Group in its Description or otherwise.

2) started the transfer process
I'm assuming you mean that you first clicked the green "Start New Transfer" button on the bottom of the instructions page.

Then on the Transfer page filled in the Yahoo Group name, selected the Groups.io group, reviewed the checkboxes, then clicked the green "Start Group Transfer Process" button on the bottom of that page.

As shown in the screenshots here:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups#Group-Transfer-Process

3) added [email protected] to YahooGroups
Direct Add hasn't been a feature at Yahoo Groups for a number of years. I'm assuming you mean you entered that address on the Yahoo Group's Manage Invitations page.

Did the page say that it was sent, or did it give you an error?

(i never received a response so the actual user was not ccreated so i
couldn't make it the moderator)
In case the notification didn't reach your email inbox, you can look in your Yahoo Group's Manage Members list (or Activity log) to see if the invitation was accepted. If you haven't already.

4) when I check transfer status, neither appears
At the bottom of the Transfer instructions page, if you click on the "In Process" box and it doesn't drop down to show you the name of the Yahoo Group being transferred, then the system does not believe that you ever clicked the green "Start Group Transfer Process" button on the transfer setup page.

If you have not completed that step then the invitation to the transfer agent will be ignored. You must complete Step 1 before proceeding to Step 2.

If it does show you the Yahoo Group name, click on it to open the In Process page to see if there are any error messages or other notes at the top.

I double checked, I have exactly followed each of these steps. A couple of issues:
1) the invitation to [email protected]?never appears on the YahooGroups activity log - when i invite them, it says sent but then never appears as a member
2) the yahoogroup never appears in the Progress drop down list (it does show several other groups that I have transferred without this issue)

If the transfer is not set up in groups.io *before* the invitation is sent, the agent will never accept it. And as you know from previous transfers, accepting the invitation is the longest wait in the process.?

You really need to get to the corresponding transfer status page to see what's going on. See below...

2) the yahoogroup never appears in the Progress drop down list (it does show several other groups that I have transferred without this issue)
Once again, this suggests that either the transfer was never set up at all, or (more likely) the email address you are logged on under is not an Owner of the group that you're trying to transfer.?

Go to the group's home page (/g/GROUPNAME) and look at the Home button at upper left. Is there a blue Owner badge adjacent to it? If not, you will remain unable to make further progress until that is remedied.

If you have more than one email address, try logging on using the other one.

Regards,?

Cathy,

1) the invitation to [email protected]?never appears on the YahooGroups activity log - when i invite them, it says sent but then never appears as a member

That's odd. It should appear in the Membership tab of the Y!group's Activity log as:
Invited to join by [moderator] via web.

The transfer agent won't show up in the Y!group's Manage Members page until after it accepts the invitation, which won't happen without the transfer making it to "In Process" status (below). And obviously won't happen if Y!Groups didn't actually send the invitation.

2) the yahoogroup never appears in the Progress drop down list (it does show several other groups that I have transferred without this issue)

Did you get any kind of error indication after clicking the green Start Group Transfer Process button? A red banner at the top of the page perhaps?

Otherwise, the Y!group's name should be added to the In Process list. Maybe there's a delay in it showing up, or perhaps you need to refresh the instruction page (F5 or Ctrl+F5) to get an up-to-date list.

I have tested this and no errors. I tested adding someone else in Yahoo Groups and even though I accepted the invitation, that user does not appear either.

another thought, i am an owner in this group in groups.io but the group was created by someone else, would that matter?

thanks!

You accepted the invitation? That's a little confusing, do you mean your test "someone" accepted the invitation?

Nothing about your Groups.io group would have any effect on how invitations work in your Yahoo group, so this question seems confused, or confusing.

I just tested an invitation in my Yahoo test group, it worked without a hitch. It generated the expected Activity Log entries, in the Membership tab:

Nov 18 3:05 PM, shalf@..., Joined group via email
Nov 18 3:00 PM, Shalf@..., Invited to join by shalfarley <...> via web

I am always cautious about absolutes because they too often come back to make us look silly.

With one transfer I worked on, back when Y! was being so glitchy, and before the masses of groups started transferring, we just weren't able to get Y! to send out an invitation, even with numerous tries. Note that this was before the formal procedure in place now. We were working with Mark to resolve the problem and I suggested that Transfer actually request a membership, which *did* work. After it went through, the transfer completed pretty much normally.

The system is not designed to work that way, but Mark has the ability to work around problems individually if his workload isn't oppressively heavy. There is a reason he prefers the system now, and I'm not suggesting going around the system for most cases, but this isn't Y! where we're working in a vacuum with no support from the operations side.

Sorry I was confusing:
i tried to invite Transfer again, nothing. I had two other people try too, nothing.

i tried inviting another user to YahooGroups and I received the invite email and said yes and that user didn¡¯t appear either.

one theory was that I deleted a transfer member in September and now we are back trying to add it again, would that make a difference.

i will try your idea and get back to you but it is a closed group so I may not be able to request to join

thanks for all of your help with this!
cathy

I did invite transfer to join (and so did two other people) . No user with the name of [email protected]

i tried to have transfer join the yahoo group but i couldn¡¯t find the group because it is a closed group (so we¡¯re some of my other groups)

could it be because the Group has a very long name bayareabookartists?

could it be because I am the owner for 6 Groups? (So you can see that I have successfully done this numerous times)

i dont think my other email went thru, I invited another email of mine to join the YahooGroup. I received the email and accepted to join the group. That user didn¡¯t appear in the Yahoo group either.

thanks for all of your help with this!

The invitation process for a Yahoo group is described in????This process has been known to fail at times; but usually it gives you a purple error bar immediately. Some people invite the transfer agent at the same time as sending an invitation to someone else, on the premise that if one went through, then the other probably did, too. You could try that.

Also be sure to check status of the transfer on the groups.io site. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/8352? There should be a status box at the top of the resulting page. If your invitation went through, it should say "We have received your invitation and will accept it soon. There is no need to send another invite." If it says something else, come back here and let us know.

When the invitation is accepted, you should receive an email at the +owner address with further instructions. But if you've already done 5 transfers you already know that.

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

So, I tried inviting two users to YahooGroups including [email protected]
? ?It said 2 sent successfully
? ?I got an email for the other user that I was invited and to click to join the group, I did but that user doesn¡¯t appear on the member list

I checked groups.ionfor the message you mentioned above - no message at the top of the screen and this group still doesn¡¯t appear in the in process lov

i am getting desperate!
could the issue be that someone besides me created the groups.io Group?

would it help to delete the group and recreate it?

could our files in yahoo groups be somehow corrupted?

i have seen two answers here about converting the users first and then convert the rest of the data later ?(I could just manually add the users for now): one said no problem to add the history later and another response said that would wipe out everything that we have. Which is it? I don¡¯t want to take a chance of wiping everything out everything that is new

thanks!
cathy

Cathy,

How many days are you waiting between actions? Keep in mind many of these
steps are manual, humans are involved, and it takes time. I recall it took
about 2-3 days before the invite got the transfer user into the Yahoo group.
Then I had to make it moderator and fill out the next step in the groups.io
side of things. Then it was between 1 and 2 weeks before the group was
copied.

Did you manage to go through all the rigamarole Yahoo's web site puts you through? Be sure you were not signed into Yahoo with your browser (in any other window/tab) when clicking that link.

Was any entry made in the group's Activity Log? Check all the tabs, but I think the Membership tab should show "joined via web' if you succeeded.

Or, try accepting the invitation by email (just reply to it).

I checked groups.ionfor the message you mentioned above - no message at the top of the screen and this group still doesn¡¯t appear in the in process lov

The status messages only appear on the page that you get to via the link in the In Process list.

could the issue be that someone besides me created the Group?

No, I've stepped in to help with a transfer when someone else created the group (and the Yahoo Group). But you are required to have the owner Role in the Groups.io group, not just moderator.

And... you are required to be logged in using the same email address that you logged in with when you initiated the transfer. If another owner initiated the transfer then you can't see it in the In Process list.

would it help to delete the group and recreate it?

No. I don't think the problem is with either group or how they are set up.

could our files in yahoo groups be somehow corrupted?

That's always a possibility, but it wouldn't cause you not to see the transfer as In Process. Any corrupted files would likely be skipped, and detailed in the tally that the transfer agent emails at the end of the transfer.

... and another response said that would wipe out everything that we have. Which is it?

No, setting up a second transfer won't wipe out anything from the first. But I think you need to get past the first one first.

I did see the invited message in Yahoo Groups in the activity log so I got thru their?
rigermorole. I was logged into other tabs but that was true for every other group that I have created. But I wasn¡¯t ?logged into groups.io with that computer, I was logged in with my iPad

I accepted the other users invite by email but I didn¡¯t get one for transfer (note that the other user doesn¡¯t appear as a member in YahooGroups)?

i have always been logged into groups.io with the same username, it is the only one I use for groups.io and I am one of the multiple owners of this group

By the lov I mean the list of values for In Process, this group does not appear there. Is there a limit to the number of groups you can own in the free edition?

I would love to get past the first one

I have waited from two weeks to two hours, same result.?

I apparently did delete a [email protected]?in YahooGroups in October, though I have no memory of doing so

thanks!
cathy

Cathy,

I guess it would be a Yahoo question:

"If you delete an email address from the member list, can they join again
later?"

Given some of the odd things Yahoo has done in the past, it would not
surprise me if that created an issue that was effectively blocking the
transfer id from groups.io. I don't think it does, but given other things,
I'd not be surprised.
