Moving a subscriber list into Groups.io

Barrier Free BC

Hello,

As a visually impaired administrator, I've been using MailChimp for sending
e-mail newsletters/bulletins to our subscribers. I'm finding MailChimp to
be very unfriendly to screen-reading software. I thought I'd give Groups.io
a try.

Our Subscribers have already indicated that they would like to receive our
mail and I don't want to have to ask everyone to sign-up again. Is it
possible to import my subscriber list from MailChimp without having to
invite everyone to sign up again?

Thanks,

Reed

Reed,

Is it possible to import my subscriber list from MailChimp without
having to invite everyone to sign up again?
Assuming you already have a way to export the email list from MailChimp, or that you have a copy in a file already...

With Groups.io there are two methods I know of.

1) Pay for the "Direct Add" feature. That's a premium feature not available to Basic (free) groups. Premium groups cost $10/month, but you can pay that for a single month, during which you add (import) your list. This is ideal for your situation - starting a group from a pre-existing list.

If you've already set up a Groups.io group for testing, look at the Billing page. If you haven't read about the plans here:
/static/pricing

2) Write to [email protected] and ask if they will import your list for you. If your pre-existing group had been a Yahoo or Google group there's a mechanism to import those members lists automatically. I don't know if there is one for Mailchimp, but I would expect that Groups.io can do something for you.

Hi Shal,

I understand these methods of importing subscribers. When I load my
subscriber list, will it result in an invitation for each subscriber to
accept the membership to Google.io or some other welcome message?

In your group's Settings page there's a tab for Member Notices. There is a sub-tab for your group's "Welcome" message. There is default text for this message but it is in an editable box so that you can customize the message.

o If you use the "Invite" function each person will be emailed an invitation to join the group. There is a fill-in box on the Invite page where you may customize the invitation email. The person's email address will be added to a "Sent Invitations" list. When he/she accepts the invitation he/she will become a member of your group and will receive the Welcome message.

If your group has restricted membership, the invitation constitutes pre-approval so the person will not need to go through a second step to be approved as a member.

o If you use the "Direct Add" function (only on Premium groups) each person's email address will be immediately added to your group's Members list. There is a fill-in box on the Direct Add page where you may customize a notice emailed to each person. The Welcome notice will also be sent to each person.

o If Groups.io imports your list for you that works the same as Direct Add, except that no default notice is sent. The Welcome notice is sent only if you have customized it.
