Is there a way to automatically respond to people posting in my old yahoo group telling them to move to groups.io? #yahoo

I've put my old yahoo group in full moderate mode so that if anyone tries posting there it won't go through and I will get a message asking me to moderate the post. Then I email them and tell them we've moved to groups.io.

Is there a way to automate this process? Can I have yahoo auto-respond to posters with a message of my own creation?

Sorry to ask here, but yahoo help and tech support are useless at this point. I couldn't find it searching the web and I figure there are a lot of former Yahoo moderators here.

Thanks

Your members will get an email when you are transferred. You can edit the Welcome message; otherwise a generic email will be sent.?

In: ?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups#Y21group-after-the-transfer
Step 1:

Customize your group's Welcome Member Notice
Your group@'s Settings page has a tab for Member Notices. There is a stock Welcome notice which you can edit. If you leave this notice Active it will be sent to the email address of each member of Y!group copied to group@[1], but it won't be sent if you uncheck the Active checkbox. You'll probably want to keep most of the stock text, but you may wish to personalize it a bit so that it sounds like a message that comes from you and relates specifically to your Y!group.
?
Additional things to tell your members in the Welcome message:
?
If you simply wish to receive and post messages to the group by email then you're all set - no further action on your part is needed.
If you click onto the Groups.io web site and you want to access members-only areas of our group@ you will need to log in using your email address (the same address used in the group). There are multiple ways to log in at Groups.io, but the easy way to start is to click the link to Log In, and since you don't have a password yet, click the "Email me a link to log in" button.
The link in the email Groups.io sends you will log you in for 30 days. Any time you want you can request another log in email, so no worries if you log out, clear your browser cookies or let the 30 days expire. There's no need to ever set a password, unless you prefer to log in that way.
?Here are some example Welcome Member Notices that others have used (usually as a temporary version).
?
Tell your group about the move to Groups.io
It may be a good idea to tell the members of Y!group about the upcoming move to group@ well in advance of the actual move, and let them know the reasons why, and what benefits you expect to have.
?
Immediately before starting the transfer process it is a good idea to tell (or remind) the members of the Y!group about the move. This can head off some panic when they receive the You have been added ... notice from Groups.io, and/or your Welcome notice. You may also want to warn the members that their spam filter may block those notices or other emails from the new group. Suggest checking their spam folder, adding the new group email address to their address book, or add groups.io to their spam white list.
?
Here are some example messages others have sent to their Y!Groups (usually as "Special Notices").

Not that I'm aware of. When you upload a file, you can set that file to be sent to members regularly, or when the member joins, leaves or is banned, but not whenever any member attempts to post a message.

I do recall being sent a file that appeared to have been sent automatically when I tried to join certain Yahoogroups in the past, but I have no idea where to set that up, and I now suspect that the moderators of those groups simply sent out that file manually.

If you find that many people do this, you may wish to consider removing any members from the list who have successfully subscribed to the IO group, and sending a special notice to the rest once a month.

Another thing you can do, is go to Management > Control Panel > About Group, and change the group's e-mail address from e.g. MYGROUPNAME to MYGROUPNAMEOLD. This means that if people try to send an e-mail to the old Yahoogroups address, it won't make it to the list. However... AFAIK unfortunately the mail will be ignored by Yahoo, so you won't know that the member tried to send something, and they will not get any message telling them that their mail wasn't delivered).

Taking the above at face value you would appear not to have put out a (Yahoo) group - wide announcement saying that the Yahoo group is now closed and has relocated to <Group Name> at Groups.io. You then tell members one by one about the move on a "per occasion" basis.

This seems to be very wasteful of your time; I would set your Yahoo group to "Announcement" which allows you to post as its owner (along with any other moderators) but no - one else. Then send a message to it (which by definition is now an Announcement) telling members that the group is now once and for all "closed" and all business transferred to the new group.

Many casual users don't pay attention to messages until they are seeking answers to some problem.

Like Adam, I too have put my old YahooGroup members in full moderated mode, after posting about the move to Groups.io and sending a bi-weekly reminder to those still on Yahoo to subscribe to Groups.io and unsubscribe from Yahoo.

It's been a few weeks since we moved our groups. I'm down to one or two users that need redirection a week

Tim -- I agree that inconveniencing people is the only effective way to get them to move. If you satisfy them by allowing them to post the old way, they will continue to do so.?

It's a constant source of irritation to me that the owners of one of the groups I helped to move about a year ago has chosen to keep the old Yahoo Group active, and have shown no interest in making a clean break. Never mind that such messages may take three days to be delivered, if they ever show up at all. And as soon as December 14 rolls around, we will lose all historical record of those posts, no matter how useful they might have been.?

I kept my groups updated throughout the transfer process, then notified them when we were close to transfer that it would happen that day. Then I sent a notice saying the group has moved, etc.? One person left from one group.? I sent a notice via Yahoo groups entitled Final Notice informing them this would be the last post from the Yahoo group. I also reminded them of the reason for the move, to preserve our archives.? And stated that all future group activity and participation will be at the new groups location and I included a link.
Also, I stated that since all participation will be only at our new location, anyone who leaves the new group will also be removed from the old Yahoo group.

Actually, unless you plan to keep the Yahoo group past Dec .14, you could remove all the members.? Especially those that are still trying to post to the Yahoo group

I did send an email to the full list saying when it was closed and telling everyone to move to . I also sent messages counting down the days to when it looked like the migration would be complete based on the transfer "how many ahead of you" tally. But some of my yahoo group users are just posting announcements and they don't actually read the list, or as someone else mentioned, some don't pay attention until they're posting something they're interested in seeing a response to.

So the question stands. Other than manually replying to all my remaining Yahoo posters telling them to move to ? Basically, does yahoo groups?have some sort of auto-respond capability.

Cheers,
Adam

There is a round-about way. Modify your "Group Description", "Welcome Message", and "Footer message" to alert those logging in, joining or reading a posted message. It doesn't send an e-mail but it is obvious. We did this and it seemed to work:

Why not turn off posting in the old group? That might get their
attention, and it will serve your purpose of not wanting posts in the
old group.

Saying that your Yahoo group was closed and disabling members' ability to post to it are not the same thing. Set it to "Announcement" and they will not be able to post and that should get their attention. I suggest that you back it up with a post of your own sent as a Special Message so that those who may have selected Special Messages only get it as well.

But some of my yahoo group users are just posting announcements and they don't actually read the list
...which points to your not having stopped them being able to post. I am puzzled by your use of "Announcements" in this context. What exactly are your members announcing?

Chris

Adam, Chris,

Set it to "Announcement" and they will not be able to post and that
/should/ get their attention.
In the controls of a Yahoo Group that would be on the Access Control tab of the Control Panel. In the row for "Messages-Who can post" move the selector to the Moderators Only column.

Or, as I did, on the Moderation tab select Moderated, and use the Reject with Reply function to remind the stragglers about the change of posting address.

I changed my Yahoo group description on my groups. The new description informs my group members where to find us. And why we moved! It also informs Yahoo, if they happen to read it, that we need more than a glorified email group.

Group Description

THIS GROUP HAS MOVED

New Location for Group

/g/? Group Name

We have moved in order to preserve our vitally important historical information, our photos of our ancestors and documents and our precious archives of files and attachments.I

Notice to members:
All group activity and messaging will be at the new location. Participation in the group is only possible at the new location.?
Therefore, all members of this Yahoo group are required to also be members at the new location. Members who leave the new group will also be removed from the Yahoo group.
