How to follow a topic from the web UI?

Paul W. Rankin

In each group Subscription settings page, under Advanced Preferences there is the option:

Following Only
Only the messages in threads or hashtags you have chosen to follow are emailed to you, according to your Email Delivery Selection.
But how do I chose to follow a topic/thread? It seems the only way is to send an email to that thread?

At this time, following and muting?are only filters used to fine-tune which emails are sent to you. They have?no effect on visibility of the online message archive.?

This functionality is on the "to do" list (), but given how difficult it would be to implement, I don't see this one happening anytime soon.

I now see that when I navigate to a topic via Home ¡ú Topics ¡ú All there is a row of buttons with a Follow This Topic button, but this button does not appear when navigating to the same topic (and same URL path) via the containing group.

I can add ?allview=1 to the URL parameters to get the buttons, but this seems very odd.

Unfortunately, at present the Groups.io home page is the only place where the Mute and Follow message functionality controls the display of message lists and messages.

I can add ?allview=1 to the URL parameters to get the buttons, but this seems very odd.

I don't see that effect with GMF's messages. What were you looking at when you did that (topic list, topic, message list, message)?

Interesting. I wonder where I went wrong in attempting to append that earlier. Oh well.

That implies to me that the implementation effort for that part of it might be a lot less than I'd imagined. Then all that's needed is the UI element to provide the view choices -- show only the muted, not muted, followed or not followed threads. I've suggested (in beta) that the UI element has a home: in the filter pane (advanced search) pane of the messages and topics lists, and the Tools pane of the Search results.
