How do I UNmoderate members
#moderation
I can't figure out how to set up my group's members as unmoderated. So far, when someone posts for the first time, I get an email and I can look at the message, then choose to approve and unmoderate. But I can't find anyplace to put all members (at once) on unmoderated status. This group is for a reunion, and as we get closer, time is more of an essence. I shouldn't have to approve the messages for each person, they should automatically be approved in advance. Please give me the steps I need to follow to select ALL members and unmoderate them!?!?!?!
Thanks, Kathryn |
Kathryn,

First, go to the group's Settings page and ensure that the Moderated checkbox, in the Spam Control section, is not checked.
?
Then, go to the Members page and put a checkmark on every member with a light blue M or NuM badge after their email address. At the bottom of the page, select Change Moderation in the Actions menu. In the pop-up Set Moderation Status dialog box select Use Group Moderation Setting then click the Change button.
?
That will let you set up to a page full of members at a time. You can go to your Account page to change the number of members shown per page up to 100, but I don't recommend "infinite scroll" as that seems to sometimes lead to trouble.

Kathryn: go to settings and then go to spam control.? I think by default the settings is for new users to be moderated.? Just uncheck that box and that should make it where no user is moderated. Both of my io groups are new and the members are coming form a couple of yahoo groups I have and am going to close down due to problems with yahoo groups and photos (an important feature in one of the groups)? One thing I don't know how to do (and hope I don't ever have to do) is to put an individual on moderated status. Barbara Jean,
That will not affect any current members, they have already been set to NuM (New User Moderated) in the Posting Privileges of their membership page. Also, the Spam Control section of your group's settings requires that at least one of those boxes be checked. For a classmates group like Kathryn's Restricted Membership may be appropriate, but otherwise NuM may be the best option for the group.
? You can do it by opening the member's page from the Members list, and scrolling to the bottom. In the Posting Privileges section chose Override: moderated then Save the change. You can do it also directly on the Members list, using the checkboxes and Actions menu, which is handy if you need to do more than one at a time. Thanks for the info Shal.? As I said my groups are new, as i am currently moving out of yahoo groups due to problems with the photo album section which is important for one of the groups due to it having a photo contest. But now I do ask one question of you, can one set the photos so that all photos must first be approved by a moderator without the need to moderate messages? Shal, can you add this to the wiki when you have time? I looked there to direct Kathryn to it, but it isn't there. Thanks! /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki /static/help More help: use the search button at the top of the Messages list. |
Barbara Jean,
... can one set the photos so that all photos must first be approvedSorry, there is no approval process for the upload of photos. The only control is whether members can upload photos or not. For photos included in email messages, it is possible that the Attachments control in the Message Formatting section will work - one of the options there is to Moderate messages containing attachments. But I haven't tested whether inline photos would be included in that control. That's the problem! The only thing checked under Spam Control is Restricted Membership. There is no checkmark in either Moderated or New Users Moderate, so I shouldn't be getting the emails to allow the post. I've even gone through all 131 members and the P for Can Post is beside everyone's email address. So there is still a problem looking for answers.

Kathryn,
That's the problem! The only thing checked under Spam Control isThere are many features which may force a message into the Pending list. I've started a page to describe it, but it is still a bit "under construction". /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Message-Moderation Still missing from that page is a description for Topic and Hashtag controls that send messages to the Pending list. Those have found to be the cause of "mystery" moderation in the past. If the pending messages have any hashtags I've even gone through all 131 members and the P for Can Post isI generally recommend against that practice, preferring to leave members set to "Use Group Moderation Setting". That way the group's Moderated checkbox can be turned on as needed to quell a flame war or other disturbance in the group. That said, maybe "Overide: not moderated" only overrides the group's Moderated checkbox, and not these other features. I'll have to check that to make sure my wiki page describes it correctly. Kathryn,
By the way Shal, this group was originally a move from Yahoo groups ifNo, other than having copied each member's Posting Privileges during the transfer. Otherwise as new members in Groups.io they would have started with Use Group Moderation Setting (no badge); or Override: New User Moderated (NuM, followed by a number) if your group's New Users Moderated box is checked. and there never was an M or NuM badge, I only have the PM could have been copied in, if any of your Yahoo Group members had that. But alas Yahoo Groups has no equivalent to the NuM badge. Having (nearly) everyone set to P is a common misunderstanding among Yahoo Group owners/mods. Even there it isn't the best way to have a New User Moderated group, using the group setting is. But because Y!G has no NuM privilege, it sets new members to M, and owners/mods commonly "unmoderate" the member by choosing "Override - posts are not moderated" rather than "Default Group Policy". and a couple of B(ouce) badges. Those would be members whose email address had likely gone bad before the transfer, but Y!G's bounce tracker long ago went flaky or broken, so that fact wasn't noted in their membership there.
