Files moved but are empty

开云体育

I just had my 2nd group transferred.
It happened pretty quickly. Within the hour of me making the transfer guy a Mod, the group was moved.
?
At first it appeared that the files moved fine.
They did but they were all empty.
The names of the files show but there was nothing in them.
All I get when I go to Edit the File is the File name and the Description.
Not the File itself.
There is no place to add the message that the file contains.
In groups IO - does the file message go directly in the description area?

Ilene,

At first it appeared that the files moved fine.
They did but they were all empty.
That's unfortunate. Something must have gone wrong when the transfer agent attempted to collect the file content.

You may be able to re-try the transfer later (leaving just the File section checked in the list of areas to transfer). Hopefully Yahoo's servers will be working better then.

There is no place to add the message that the file contains.
In groups IO - does the file message go directly in the description
area?
No, the content should be in the file. The description text is only for a description of the file content.

What I found out is when I?click on the link of the files name and then save to my external hard drive, the content of the file is there. Then I can?open up the file and read it from notepad.
?
But when I click on Edit, it doesn't show the file content.??
So how can I edit the files to get rid of the Ygroups links and put in group IO's links.
?
When I click edit all I see is the name of the file and description but nothing is there.
I checked my other group that became an IO group and the files are the same.

?
This is what I see when I click edit

You can't edit files online.? You have to download each file, make any edits, and upload.? If you don't change the filename, you'll need to delete the originals before uploading since duplicates aren't allowed.? Ot you can put the updated files in another folder.

Okay.
?
So I saved the file to my external hard drive and opened it up on notepad.
Then I make my edits on notepad and then click on the upload button.
Then I click on browse and find the document.
Click on Add
?
Now when I do that, I still can't read the file when I click on edit.
?
I even tried creating a new file and there isn't any place to write the content of the file.
It doesn't show up in the file - I have to save it first to my external in order to read it.
?
Also in Y groups you can select when you want the members to receive a file.
How do you do that in groups IO
When do the members get to see the files?
?
I am really lost

Okay, I just searched the forum and found out really the files?in?IO are useless.
?
Members would have to go to the files section to read them. But many files are useless unless a member leaves the group, wants to know the rules again and the application for membership which they won't get automatically and is virtually useless once they become a member.
?
So the files that in Y Groups that were scheduled to be sent upon joining the group,
Bi-weekly, Monthly etc cannot be scheduled to be sent in IO Groups. When a member joins my 2nd IO group, I have to send them the directions they need to follow directly to their personal email address as they won't get them upon joining.
?
When someone leaves the group, the Sorry to see you leave file can't be auto sent to them. When someone joins the group, the Application isn't sent to them. It all has to be done manually.?
?
For notices, the calendar needs to be used.

Ilene,

?If these are files that are intended to be readable online, like regular web pages, you might be happier copying their content into Wiki pages.

Pro:
  • You, your members, and even the public can read them (set by the permission for your wiki).
  • You (and your members, if you permit) ?can edit them online
  • When you edit them a revision history is kept so you can monitor changes.
  • They don't count against your group's storage limit

?Con:
  • ?There is no built-in folder heirarchy
  • There is no sortable list of the pages.

Now when I do that, I still can't read the file when I click on edit.

?No, you cannot. The Edit function in Groups.io's Files does not include the file content. You view the content by opening the file (if your browser supports that file type) or downloading it.
?
I even tried creating a new file and there isn't any place to write the content of the file.

?Correct. That functionality has been discussed in the "suggestion box" group, , but not implemented. Instead you must create the file on your computer and upload it.
?
Also in Y groups you can select when you want the members to receive a file.
How do you do that in groups IO

?Groups.io does not have a scheduling option for files. Here you do that either with Member Notices (a tab in your group's Settings page) for notices to be sent on various events such a joining or leaving a group, or with calendar Events if you just want to send the notice periodically.

?Our messages "crossed in the mail". For these purposes see my note about Member Notices, and our wiki page.? Wiki pages are not appropriate for notices to be sent to members.

?Correct. Here those features are handled differently.?

When a member joins my 2nd IO group, I have to send them the directions they need to follow directly to their personal email address as they won't get them upon joining.

?Copy that file content into a ?Welcome member notice.

When someone leaves the group, the Sorry to see you leave file can't be auto sent to them.

?Copy that file content into a ?Goodbye member notice.

When someone joins the group, the Application isn't sent to them. It all has to be done manually.?

?Copy that file content into a Pending Subscription member notice.

For notices, the calendar needs to be used.

I had the same issue when I first got my group started because we also have periodical notices that are important to be sent. I made very good experience with the calender function. There I put in all the notices that I want to be sent out regularly, and it works very well.

Shal, I had the same exact problem with my two large groups.? Files did not transfer at all.? I tried to re-transfer both groups again, but just checking off the Files section.? I don't see any "pending" notice when I go back and check my submission, though, on the Easy Transfer page.? It just shows both groups as "completed".? The transfer agent ID is still set on both groups as "moderator".? So, not sure what this process will look like?? Has anyone tried to transfer their list(s) again, but just one section??

Ilene's files transferred just fine. She just expected to be able to edit files online, which cannot be done.

You have to delete the completed transfer request(s) first. Only then can you start a new transfer for just the files section.

Select the groups affected one by one and hit the red "Delete Completed Transfer" button on the resulting page.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Thank you, Bruce.? That was not intuitively obvious to me on the Transfer page, and if this was on the Help page, I must have missed it.? Have my second transfer request successfully submitted for both my groups, now, and crossing my fingers the Files come across this time.?

Just a quick update for those whose Files didn’t make it with the first transfer: ?I submitted a 2nd transfer request and asked to have just the Files transferred for both my groups. The transfer happened very quickly, and happy to report both groups’ Files were successfully transferred. Happy camper.?

I really don?t understand what you are talking about. In my group the files are our treasure. We have all our research and other scientific information stored in our files in form of pdfs, word and text documents. Every member has access to them. Opening them via word or other text programs they are readable to everyone. They can be printed.

The files feature is the reason why I am not with google groups or any other forum but with groups.io. Files to me is the most valuable feature of all. And I am thankful to Mark?s that his transfer facility was able to move almost all of them from yahoo to groups.io.

Files are just that - files.? What they're used for is up to the group owner.? On one of my groups, I upload all the club records so that others can check them out and offer corrections, if needed.? In order to read them online, there needs to be a 'handler' in the browser being used that recognizes the files.? I usually upload as PDF files because nearly everyone has the reader for those.? Once in awhile I'll upload a spreadsheet (.xls).? If the browser is set correctly, it will offer to open them in the proper program.? It's still outside the browser, but more convenient since the file doesn't have to be saved locally before it's opened.

I use the Wiki or a database for things that need to be updated very often.? Those can be set to limit who can change them or add information.? For sending information to my groups on a regular schedule, I use the calendar and/or Member notices.? I also have the Group Guidelines notice sent out monthly.? There are lots of capabilities here that should be explored to decide what works best for each owner.
