Donations - Where is the Money #donations

Dale Dreher

I cannot find any info on this in the Help files..? so I must ask for help from anyone with experience..? ??I have around 3000 members in my group and anticipate I can get donations from maybe 200-300 of them.? Amounts of $10 to 25 to 50 dollars generally, per year.

First of All Groups.IO wants 5% of donations, as a processing fee.. is this fair?? Or should I use Paypal ?

I have set up my Premium Group to Receive Donations though, to test it out.? ?I made a test donation of $5. to my group from my wifes credit card.? I hooked up my bank account to the Groups.IO Money recieving entity (which I forgot the name of).

Anyways, Under my name, Accounts, I do see the Donation as being recieved under Billing.? ?But Where is the money?? ?There should be an account balance somehwere I would imagine, with a balance of $4.75? ( $5. less 5%).? ?? Can't find it.. I did get an email from Groups.io telling me I got a donation of $5. but there is no link to any banking system...??? ? ?I need help figuring out how to get the Money from my Groups.IO balance (whereever that is).. into my personal bank account.? Are there detailed instructions somewhere I am missing?

Thank you for sharing any experience you have on this.?

actually I found the bank entity.. it's Stripe, that is where the $4.75 of the $5.00 is sitting.? ?I still have the question, for anyone who has tried... Is Stripe effective for the group to make easy donations?? (??

I like the idea of having the Open Donation tab right there on the home page fo the group.? But People are so used to Paypal.? ???? ?Am I gonna get results with Stripe vs Paypal.? ? ?

Thanks again.? Dale.

I haven't dried the donation service within Groups.io, but I can tell you two things in answer to your questions:
  1. Stripe is an industry leader, perhaps THE industry leader for accepting credit cards, so it is trustworthy and solid.
  2. Credit card companies generally charge 2.9% or more (up to 3.4% for Amex), plus $0.30 per transaction; that is Stripe's transaction.? I have seen other web providers charge up to 3% more on top of that as their own service fee, which many deem reasonable.? If Groups.io charges only 5% and that has the 2.9% plus $0.30 already built in, then I would say that is very reasonable.? The alternative is that you create your own website and do your own programming to allow it to work in conjunction with Stripe or Square or Paypal or whatever other processor you want to you.? Unless you are bringing in a ton of donations, it probably isn't worth doing your own programming.

One option to send money is to use PayPay and have peeps send as "friends and family" - when funded via a checking acct (can't recall about a debit card?) there's no fee to either end.? I use that all the time, and to pay a vendor (via their email address rather than paying an invoice) whenever I can.
I believe that Venmo (a PP company I believe) is (or was) no fee as well.

PayPal has been my primary system for over 20 years for our? nonprofit.
Its' standard is 2.9% +US$0.30
Someone mistakenly mentioned Paypay instead of PayPal, I think

We have used PayPal for donations for a very long time and I really like them. They have excellent customer service and very clear documentation. I don't try to get around the fees because they are providing a legitimate and valid Service. ?Of course, we should pay fees.

Opps.? LOL.? Fat fingers.
Yes the PP standard fee is 0.30 + 2.9%? Except for F&F as I described.

BTW, if one uses PP and regularly issues large refunds, PP is changing the fee policy to tighten the screws -- no longer will the PP fee associated w/ the refunded amount be returned (i.e.,?PP will keep 100%?of its original fee.)? Previously PP kept 0.30 + 2.9% on ONLY the NON-refunded amt.??

I don't have any experience with accepting donations from members, or what percentage companies charge for transaction services. What I do understand is a cost to benefit. If a Premium group costs $210.00 per year, and there are 200 to 300 members willing to donate between $10.00 to $50.00 per year minus 5% , I think it's more than worth it.?

I think everyone missed the OP's question. How does he retrieve the money in his Stripe account? I'm asking the same thing.

In my case, having opened an account with Stripe and giving it the Account Name of [MyGroupName], the Legal Business Name of [MyGroupName], along with the Statement Descriptor of [MyGroupName Donations] and associated my website as: /g/[MyGroupName], as well as other personal info, I then had to attach/add a bank account and set up a Direct Debit.

What was then necessary was to add a Bank Account and set a Payment Schedule under Settings > Payments and Payouts > Bank accounts and scheduling. Adding the bank account requires you to set up a Direct Debit arrangement (to receive payments) and then a Payout schedule. You can select an Automatic Daily, Weekly or Monthly schedule, or a Manual schedule.

So far, I've received one donation in my connected bank account and expecting another 4 payments on Monday 25th November.

Does that answer your question, sufficiently?

Thanks for the details about what to put in the Account Name, Legal Business Name, etc. That is especially useful.

I have updated the page of the wiki for future reference.?

In case people haven't used the wiki, there is a handy search box at the top. Just in case you don't see your query in the table of contents.
