Concerned about FALSE Pending member/Spammer?

My small group of crafters keeps getting requests for this same "person" to join our group.
When a person asks to join there are some basic questions I ask to narrow down if my group is
right for them, if they are right for my group of hand selected crafters.

I had a "person" request to join two days ago, her replies to my questions were flaky, but in the
end when asked who recommenced my group I was given a name of a long standing member
and approved this "persons" request to join.

Within a short time it was obvious to us this "person" didn't belong there, so I deleted her. ?

Reports came back to me that She is trying to gain access to not just my group, but many.
Crafters are very social.? Their memberships cross over the internet into several groups.
Most crafters belong to at least 2 groups so that they can share ideas and learn from one another.
We're also very much into social media using most platforms to show off our art.

Several of us starting "looking" for this "person" in social media to try to figure out what the heck was going on.
Meanwhile in my group alone this "person" has returned, trying to gain access.? I've banned her.

But concerns still linger about if this is a spammer or worse.
Is there any way for groups.io or it's owner to check into this?
Most of these crafting groups are all women.? And young adults.

Thank you for listening and any advice that can be shared.

What I would have done is contacted the person?they said recommended her/him to the group and?got feed back from them. It may be that you deleted a member who?to you may seem flaky, but may have an illness that makes them come across that way like a stroke, but crafting is good therapy for them. You can still ask the member who that person said?recommended them to find out about them. Ilene

Thank you Ilene for your reply.

The person whose name was given did not know her at all..? She checked all memberships in the groups She belongs to and came up with no connection.? I'm sorry that I slipped mentioning that in my request.

We tried everything we could to confirm who She was, but found nothing to support this was a legit person with a honest request.? Then the continued requests along with hearing that She's requesting membership in many groups is another issue that has our RED ALERTS going off.

I just want everyone safe.

Oh so you did ask them.
Then that is very strange that that member got?their name.
?
Did you try sending that?person an email asking them how they knew the person who recommended them because that person doesn't recall knowing them. ?
?
I also send a questionnaire prior to them joining but there are ways to?fudge those. So when I am iffy about a member who joins any of my groups, I first have them on moderation so I can see what they are sharing.?I have had members in the past join groups just to advertise their groups. So?by?being on moderation I will know that.
?
Now here is another?reason?there should be a way to close off the archives to members. I already suggested it in Support for IO. But if more members ask for it maybe it will be escalated. It is on the back burner now.
?
If the members couldn't see what is being shared by reading the archives you wouldn't have to worry about any bad members. Just put them on no mail and then they can't see what is going on. Then you wouldn't have to worry about them bothering you by trying to rejoin and rejoin. ?But being that the archives?cannot be shut down, that won't work in this case. ?

Managing your membership is your job as Group Owner (and your Moderators), not a job for the management of Groups.io.

In addition to everything you said above (some not included) you also mentioned in another message that the member who this "person" says recommended her has never heard of her, so she lied about that. That's a REALLY BIG negative on top of obviously not belonging in your group.

All of the above is all the clue I'd need to leave her "banned" and FORGET ABOUT HER. No need to be concerned who/what a banned member might be in addition to the reason you banned her. That reason should be enough.

Note that "banned" means you won't see a new subscription request from that banned email address. But... if she changes her email address she can submit a subscription request from that new email address... which you can also ban. Let's hope you don't have to lather, rinse and repeat.

This doesn't make sense to me. If your members (I prefer the word SUBSCRIBER to make it clearer that they're a MEMBER of your group vs just a MEMBER of Groups.io) ) can't read the message archives, then they can only participate via email.

Just put them on no mail and then they can't see what is going on. Then you wouldn't have to worry about them bothering you by trying to rejoin and rejoin.
For sure! Can't read the archives AND can't get email? No point in anyone joining such a group.

But being that the archives cannot be shut down, that won't work in this case.

The archives CAN be "shut down." Just change the group settings so only SUBSCRIBERS (members of the group) can read the message archives.

?
Doubtful.

If the person had violated the terms of service you could report their violation and maybe Groups.io would delete their account. But what you've said indicates that you headed them off before anything reached that point.

Otherwise Groups.io doesn't know much more about them than you do: their email address. Groups.io could possibly see if they've been attempting to join other groups, but of course that of itself isn't a violation.

Right - but it should be an option as my groups are email based groups and the only responding
I allow is from email. If a group isn't email based then the archive option can be set so all members see it.
But there should be a way to hide it if needed.
?
"For sure! Can't read the archives AND can't get email? No point in anyone
Joining such a group." If you read the entire email, it wasn't for the whole group. Just the potential trouble maker.
?
Let me explain. Many of the groups?recently joining groups IO from Yahoo were email based groups.
The archives aren't any use to them and I don't want them to be as well as many of the "new"
Yahoo groups that are moving to groups IO from the circle that I travel in.
I am not saying to put everyone on "No Mail" just the spammer that the original poster was talking about.
But they still have access to the archives so no mail wouldn't be the answer right now.
I was just thinking of a way for the spammer or potential spammer wouldn't bother the group.
Moderation is one way.
?
I do know that the archives can be set to MEMBERS ONLY
But that isn't what I was talking about.
There should be an option so that members can't see the archives and should just rely on email.
What works for your groups or other people's groups don't necessarily work for all groups.

That wouldn't do any good either because they can change that setting themselves.? Moderation is the only tool that would do anything near what you recommend.

A big thank you to all who shared their thoughts.

I do have new? subscribers on moderation for their first 4 posts.? And yes, that helps.

But in this case, I didn't let it get that far.? She posted once.?

I was far more concerned about a new subscriber having access to our databases of information..?

But in the end, going with my personal gut reaction was the best course.? Deletion.? And then when I saw her email address return, I hit BAN.

Again, thank you.

Febe,

I was far more concerned about a new subscriber having access to our
databases of information..
One technique I've heard of for dealing with this is to use the primary group as a introductory area for new members, and have one or more subgroups for "inner circle" members.

This allows you to keep sensitive information (messages, files, etc.) limited to "inner circle" members, while still having useful conversations and content that is less sensitive available to the the general membership of the primary group. Depending on the nature of your group the primary could even be unrestricted membership, while keeping membership in the "inner circle"(s) restricted.

Whether this would work for you depends a lot on the nature of the group, and whether there's a natural dividing line between general information and sensitive information, such that it would be easy and obvious for your inner circle members to know where a post or an upload belongs.
