Banning

I have a former member that caused me some VERY unneeded grief before unsubbing and I would like to be able to ban her from seeing the group or reapplying again. I know I can remove and ban members but how do I do it if they're already gone. I know it's possible since she's managed to ban me from several groups she's at least part owner of that I've never been a member of. It's very childish and I just want NOTHING to do with her.
?
In my my 15+ years of owning groups here and on Yahoo, this is the first time I've had to deal with such an objectionable person. I realize people can have differences of opinion but this was beyond nasty. I find it quite upsetting.
?
Thanks for any advice.

Go to Admin>Members and select "banned" using the blue pull-down menu button at top left. On the resulting page you will find an entry box where you can pro-actively enter someone's email address.

Note that banned members can still read group messages if your message archives are public (see Admin>Settings>Privacy>Visibility). Banning also does not prevent someone from attempting to join your group using a different email address.

Hope this helps,

Bruce,

? ? ? ? ? ? Just curious if you know whether Groups.io has any IP address banning capability.? That gets used elsewhere where I moderate in extreme cases where someone keeps trying to resubscribe using a string of different e-mail addresses.? ?Of course, they have to NOT be using a VPN, but since many don't this can be quite handy, too.

No (yet?).? On paid groups, you can ban domains though.

That would be very helpful. In my case, I don't think the offender?will try that but, even if she does, my group requires approval and I can just get?the IP off the application.?

Donna,

In my case, I don't think the offender will try that but, even if she
does, my group requires approval and I can just get the IP off the
application.
While sometimes better than nothing, note that using an IP address to identify someone has limitations.

On the false positive side, often an entire household, office, library, dorm, or other location will use a single IP address at its internet router. In some cases entire cities can be behind a single IP address.

On the false negative side a person may be able to be assigned a new IP address as simply as turning their cable/fiber modem/router power off and on again. Or they can temporarily use their phone as a WiFi hotspot. Or they can go to another location. Or they can use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to route through a different IP address.

All of those, the false positive and negative, are probably unlikely for most would-be group members. But someone persistent enough may try those if they find that simply getting a new email address didn't work.

Just a quick addition:? Where I am accustomed to using this it's really not generally being used to identify someone, per se, but "some source."? ?We frequently get "spammer farms" that can be instantly eliminated by using IP as the ban filter.? We don't care anything about the specific "who," but that the specific who is originating at a specific "where."
