Question [about post visibility]
About message archives ?- it is reversible to go from public to private, but not from private to public.

Have you checked what is available in Google? Not really much personal info, even in a group like Group Managers Forum with public message archives.
Check it out after you logout or?use a different browser or device so you will see it the way non-members see it. /g/GroupManagersForum/topics And attached is this thread as a PDF on Google (not signed in). Also?you can change your display name and you don't have to include footers like email addresses or other personal info.
See Display Name and Profile Privacy. groups.io (Member) Directory doesn't show if you aren't signed into the group. In fact the left menu is quite stripped down. Even members can't see you if you don't want them to. See?groups.io And Members (list) only shows all members to owners and mods if that's what you choose for your group. See the difference: groups.io Frances -- Help available from Groups.io help and GMF wiki. ? |
Just for the hell of it. Google my name and go to page #2. Tell me what you see On Sun, Mar 20, 2022, 3:55 PM Frances <frances@...> wrote: Have you checked what is available in Google? Not really much personal info, even in a group like Group Managers Forum with public message archives. |
So is this something that could be done after the fact or is it to late?? On Sun, Mar 20, 2022, 4:37 PM Pete Cook <peterscottcook@...> wrote:

Just for the hell of it. Google my name and go to page #2. Tell me what you see--I am not sure what I am supposed to google. I searched your display name - Hams. If I search for Groups.io hams, I see your group.? /g/ham The group settings you have chosen are: ?
All members can post to the group.
? ? Posts to this group do not require approval from the moderators.
? ? Posts from new users require approval from the moderators.
? ? Messages are set to reply to group.
? ? Subscriptions to this group do not require approval from the moderators.
? ? Archive is visible to anyone.
? ? Wiki is visible to members only.
? ? Members can edit their messages.
? ? Members can set their subscriptions to no email.
?
Since you haven't sent any messages yet, there is nothing in the Messages archive. However you have opted to be in the directory of Group Managers Forum. ?I can get your email address there and when I search Google for your email address, I see that you are findable from [email protected] As I posted a little earlier, you can make your messages private. Just go into Admin, Settings. Privacy. Several bits here - the help says: In the Privacy panel on the Settings page, you can customize these settings:
?
Visibility of the group and its message archive
Member List Visibility
Email Address Visibility in Archive
See especially:
Email Address Visibility in Archive This setting controls whether full email addresses are visible in the message archive on the group¡¯s website. Select the option you want to apply:
?
Mask email addresses in the web archive
Show email addresses in the web archive
Note: When an archive is publicly viewable, email addresses are always hidden from nonmembers who view the archive.
The help talks about fixing it too: If the group has:
?
A ¡°publicly viewable messages¡± visibility setting: You can change it to a ¡°private messages¡± setting on this page (for example, if you changed your mind about the public visibility of the group¡¯s message archive).
Note: During the time when the archive was publicly viewable, web search engines might have found and cached the content of some messages (that is, group messages could appear in the results of a web search). That cached content will still be available until it is purged by search engines when they discover that the content is no longer visible from the original page.

In the actual group settings? So the person in charge of that group can only do it On Sun, Mar 20, 2022, 4:56 PM Pete Cook <peterscottcook@...> wrote:

So the person in charge of that group can only do itIf it's not your group and you don't want the information public, you have a couple of options.? 1)? Convince the owner to change the group setting.? 2)? Delete all of your posts and leave the group. Be sure to look on the home page of any groups you consider joining and look at the Group Settings at the upper right.? If it says "Archive is visible to members only.", then the public (and search engines) can't see the messages.? If it says "Archive is visible to anyone.", then it will work like the one you're in.? Anyone, including search engines, can see the messages. Duane -- Lots of detailed information can be found in the Owners Manual and Members Manual. |
Duane, So if I "leave" the group all that info will be gone?? On Sun, Mar 20, 2022, 5:30 PM Duane <txpigeon@...> wrote: On Sun, Mar 20, 2022 at 04:15 PM, Hams wrote: |

So if I "leave" the group all that info will be gone??You can delete your messages from the group. Open a message. Use the hamburger menu below the message.? Choose Delete Message. Perhaps you can persuade that group owner to change to private archive. Then you won't need to leave the group. Just delete your old messages. However, it seems that your own group has the same setting - a public archive. Fix that. (I am assuming that this is your group: ?/g/ham?) If it is not, sorry. Ignore that.? Or if you own another group on Groups.io, check the homepage of your group. Based on what you have said:? You don't want: ??Archive is visible to anyone. It's years of postsWell as the help says about a group changing to private archive from public archive: Note: During the time when the archive was publicly viewable, web search engines might have found and cached the content of some messages (that is, group messages could appear in the results of a web search). That cached content will still be available until it is purged by search engines when they discover that the content is no longer visible from the original page. Your best bet is to contact the group owner and ask for the archive to be made private. You might send the owner this Help webpage: /helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/customizing-group-settings/privacy-settings Frances ? -- Help available from Groups.io help and GMF wiki. ? |

To clarify, when you wrote "gone" I assumed you meant gone from the group's archives. If you just want the info inaccessible to anyone who is not a member, making the group private will do that. Caveat: Obviously anything that anyone posts to an online forum (including this one) can be copied by anyone who has access and propagated elsewhere. If there are things you don't want to risk being made public, don't put them on any group forum. Pete |

I can't even do that. It's years of postsI forgot to mention that even if you delete all of your own posts, any replies containing your information would still be visible.? If you really want a treat, search for your name along with groups.io? Every search engine I tried found the messages on the site.
