treatment of gmail "reply" to a GIO message
if I understand it correctly, when a group member replies to a message from GIO, that reply is queued for all members of the group, because the GIO group is the "sender" of the message. if a recipient wants to respond only to the OP, they must use the (blue) GIO reply to sender function. is there any optionality on this?
(e.g., Joe posts: i need to borrow a ladder; this post goes to all 200 residents; Carol replies via gmail "i have a ladder", and all 200 residents get Carol's reply.? if Carol wants only Joe to know she has a ladder, Carol must ignore gmail's "reply" function, and seek GIO's reply to sender function.) |

In your given scenario, Carol can ignore the default reply and use the reply to sender link in the email footer. Another alternative we use is to have a #replytosender hashtag on the OP message (with the reply to sender option checked in the hashtag propteries) so that the default reply option in email clients sends a message to the OP rather than the group.? If you are the group owner (or a moderator with the right privileges) you can also change the topic to 'Override: reply to sender'. Andy |
Bruce, if I understand it correctly, when a group member replies to a message from GIO, that reply is queued for all members of the group, ... That depends on the group's settings, one of which is Reply To.
... because the GIO group is the "sender" of the message. Not for that reason. The From address is generally the member's address and that would normally control where an email Reply goes. However in groups that have their Reply To set to Group (which is the default) then Groups.io includes a Reply-To: field in the header of outbound messages directing replies to the group's posting address. Nearly all email interfaces will interpret that Reply-To field to override the From address. if a recipient wants to respond only to the OP, they must use the (blue) GIO reply to sender function. is there any optionality on this? If the group is a free, barter, or sale type of group, and customarily has postings such as your example, the group's Reply To can be set to Sender. This changes the default state of the Private button in the group's web page, and it also changes the way the Reply-To header field in outbound email messages is handled. This means that by default member's replies will go to the Sender regardless of whether they reply on the web site or by email.

Some MUAs (e.g. Thunderbird) make "reply to list" the default reply action to messages, even if the list is configured "Announce Only", "Reply To=Sender", and "Remove other reply options", i.e. replying to the list should is not supposed to be an option. Mark thought he fixed this recently, but the problem remains, I think because messages include some hidden headers like "List-Post:" and "Mailing-List:" which include the posting email address. ? There's a thread on beta about this at https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/72075793 |
Jim,
Unfortunately not true. Some MUAs (e.g. Thunderbird) make "reply toHere's some more history on the subject: In short, the inclusion of List-Post proved problematic due to what I consider a Thunderbird bug*, but it was added back specifically for groups set with Reply To = Sender. It makes sense to me that List-Post should /not/ be included if the group is also set to "Remove Other Reply Options". Shal *The maintainers of Thunderbird do not agree. Last I looked the bug report was marked "won't fix". There is a config option for it though (which I set two years ago and have forgotten about since). -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
