This is a typical scenario and it's not limited to Gmail.? In your given scenario, Carol can ignore the default reply and use the reply to sender link in the email footer. Another alternative we use is to have a #replytosender hashtag on the OP message (with the reply to sender option checked in the hashtag propteries) so that the default reply option in email clients sends a message to the OP rather than the group.? If you are the group owner (or a moderator with the right privileges) you can also change the topic to 'Override: reply to sender'.
