Creating a How-To Guide for groups.io #howtoguide

Daddy Dean

Hi Forum,

While I have found groups.io to be easy to use, some of my older group members seem to think they are now in alien world, lost and with out hope.? Is there a simple" how to use.io guide" I could send out to members?? I did look but did not see one as I have things for IO that I have been able to copy and paste to send to members.?

Tonight one could not figure how to start a new post so piggy backed off another person post. Least they made a post and got it out to the group but still.? I knew some would be a little disoriented, but not being able to figure how to start a new message in IO is beyond anything I would have guessed they could not figure out.? I can only guess they are so use to Yahoo where at the bottom of email message they had:?Reply via web post ? Reply to sender ? Reply to group ? ? (5)

They are just lost with out the choice of starting a new topic as a footer on each email message.? They do not understand that if want to start? new topic from an email they simply need just to click group home and then post.? To add to some of this confusion some are using their new phones and tablets they really do not understand either.? So it is a double whammy to the learning curve. ?

Do you think asking Mark to add a Start a New Topic into the footer of emails would be possible?? It could be right after Group Home and I think would make things easier for some who are not good with computers to start with being more comfortable.

Thanks,

Dean

I agree that how-to's and comprehensive help pages would be very useful

Hi Dean,
?
I get indivdual messages from the GMF group.? If I wanted to start a new post for this group, or any group, I would click on the link at the bottom of the message called Group Home.? When that page loaded, I would click on Post from the menu on the left side of the page.? When the message form opens, then I would just write my message.
?
That part is pretty easy to do; but, I agree, it could be helpful to have a Help section.?

Dean,

While I have found groups.io to be easy to use, some of my older group
members seem to think they are now in alien world, lost and with out
hope. Is there a simple" how to use.io guide" I could send out to
members? I did look but did not see one as I have things for IO that I
have been able to copy and paste to send to members.
GMF's wiki could be a place to keep such information. If you find good information you could add a link to it in the Wiki, or if you've written good information please consider contributing to the wiki. I've made a couple of starts there, but neither page is complete.

GMF's wiki has public visibility, meaning that you can point your members there without them needing to join GMF. If you are contributing to the wiki remember not to put any private information there.

Editing Wiki pages is pretty easy - the edit tool is very similar (or identical) to the message editor used to create posts and replies. Creating a new page and linking to it from the home page could be easier, but it isn't too difficult. If you need help with the process let me know.

Note that all revisions to Wiki pages are kept and can be compared. Just as edited posts can. Each revision shows who made the revision and when.

Do you think asking Mark to add a Start a New Topic into the footer of
emails would be possible? It could be right after Group Home and I
think would make things easier for some who are not good with computers
to start with being more comfortable.
Sure. Ask in beta@ - I recommend including the hashtags "#messages #suggestions" in the subject.

Hi,
Yes I think for many of us who own groups it is instinctive to just that, but for members who are computer challenged, they are not understanding that.? Since all on my group came from Yahoo they are use to that footer which had Start New Topic.? They are not able to think that group home, then post to start a new topic, so they are getting frustrated as they just do not know what to do.? I had member who could not understand why she could not attach a photo.? In my group attaching and embedding are disabled as we want members to make album where things can easily found later.? I was not aware that those on Yahoo who sent a photo in an email a copy was not in albums, those were in Photomatic which I had not even thought to move.?
What I like and think Donna is saying the same just something very simple but would tell you how to post from an email.? How to make photo album and such as there still some who are just getting computers and every thing we take for granted is mysterious to them.? Even those who have had computers but only use to Yahoo are are at lost as to how to do some simple things.

Dean

This is interesting to me, because my group on Y! is almost completely email. It was so difficult to get a Y! account, then log in with it (ignoring your own personal email), then post, that they have 99.99% of the time simply started a new topic simply by sending a new email with a new subject line.?

I suspect my biggest problem will be getting the group email address replaced in their address books!

About "start a new topic" - we spent quite some time figuring out how to merge threads. I am not sure that we want to encourage people to start a new thread when they really want to reply to the current message.

Hi Group,

I added two How To Do to Wili.? One is for setting a password and profile!? Other is for making a photo album.? I did there for my group and place them here if someone should need to use them for your group if you have members who are computer challenged or just so use to Yahoo they are lost on IO.? Feel free to edit them as you need to

Hi Francis,
I think that could depend on your what is your group is about.? My group is for Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Machines and only Singer W9.
In my group if some post about an issue with say a W&W 8 and you have a W&W D9 with same issue how to correct that would be a totally different process as there is that much difference between the machines.? It would be nice if member could from the email click start a new topic and ask how can I correct _______ on a W&W D9.
I would think this could be like in Yahoo where the owner could set the link for new subject to work or not as I know on some of my Yahoo group links work some they are there but not live and working.?

I just made a suggestion in Beta for a simple sort of manual for more challenged users, and also a manual for more complex things.

I would write it myself, except I don't know enough about it to do that. But I'm willing to try, if I can get some help with the things I don't understand.

Daddy Dean wrote:>>Even those who have had computers but only use to Yahoo are are at lost as to how to do some simple things.<<

Exactly, so we would need a guide for the following:

How to use groups.io via website
How to use groups.io via e-mail
How to create groups and moderate in groups.io
And probably the simple commands vs the complex ones in each.

Brenda

Could GMF's wiki be copied into Word documents and used as a separate mailable document?

That's what I'm looking for, something we could send people.

Brenda

Did Mark ever absolutely clearly define the how to set a password or join a group process?

I'm still waiting to invite people until it's able to be explained step by step.

Thanks,

Brenda

Vickie wrote:>>Brenda, I have not received any email on the exact topics for a how to guide... and I am in gmf.. redirect, reply to this topic there ok..<<

Done.

I've started the topic here and maybe the others previously posted in here can be joined to this thread by hashtag? Shal, is that possible?

Or could the whole thread be merged under my new subject heading?

I'll track down the other post #'s for you in a little while, in case it can't be merged or connected.

Brenda

Per Duane's & Vickie's posts in Beta:

For info on this topic, see post #s #5878 (near the bottom), #5886, #5890,

and #5891 &#5892 which is bringing the topic to over here in GMFio.

In here, the topic was discussed in post #'s #209, #254 (I found my missing post) & #255.

Maybe those could be merged into this thread, or if not, maybe the thread could be hashtagged to match the one I made here.

Anyway, let's use this thread for discussing creating the #HowToGuide, if everyone's okay with that. :)

If you all decide to do this . I have images ?showing step by step ?how to log into ?first the .io website
and all the way through joining a group. Including ?profile and any issues I encountered.
My reason for taking all these images was to create an instructional blog with Q & A's also
All I have so far are the images.. arrows pointing with instructions ?needs to be added to the images.

Brenda,

You did not specify which group the message numbers ?are from
So ?I checked the message numbers in ?both the Beta and GMF group?
I can't find any of ?the message numbers you have listed.?
GMF ?says ?That message number does not exist. The message may have been deleted.
Beta is not even telling me if there is a message available or not.

Is search engine ?working? ?

This is Marks Help Center

I searched and found

?Hope this helps

GMF ?says ?That message number does not exist. The message may have been deleted.Beta is not even telling me if there is a message available or not.

Okay, doing it with more clarity:
IN BETA on groups.io:

Post #5878 by me (discussion of creating a manual)
/g/beta/message/5878?p=,,,20,0,0,0:Created,0,,20,2,123,1427197

/g/beta/message?msgnum=5886
Duane talks about making wiki pages and then bringing the topic to GMF.

/g/beta/message?msgnum=5890
Your comment about having images for use in making the help manual.

Then in #5891 & #5892 we discuss bringing the topic to over here in GMFIO

In GMF on groups.io
Post #209
/g/GroupManagersForum/message/209?p=,,,20,0,0,0:Created,0,,20,2,54,1331101
Duane discusses us doing the documentation

Post #254 (Sent a little prematurely)
/g/GroupManagersForum/message?msgnum=254
Me talking about the documentation

Post #255 second attempt to send the post I accidentally sent prematurely.
/g/GroupManagersForum/message?msgnum=255

Hope that explains it.

If you aren't typing the number in MESSAGE VIEW or EXPANDED MESSAGE VIEW, it will tell you no posts exist if you type the number in the search box. You have to be in Message View or Expanded Message view to use the numbers to search.

Thanks Brenda
